The biggest player in CIF history was Bob "Big Man " Pointer, Santa Barbara High, 1967, played with Sam Cunningham, Pointer was 6'1, 447. Had to sew 3 uniforms together. They played in the CIF Finals that year. The O lone ave. was 347.

Ran into Sam in San Pedro a few years ago. Told him the story about his team mate on the '72 National Champion Trojans who was the center - lighter than Sam. He complained that everytime on goal line or short-yardage plays leaping Sam would land on him after blocking down. That center, Dave Brown is the former OC at San Clemente now the OC at Dana Hills.

Sam's one of my best friends and Godfather to my son. I remember Sam telling me when Bob Pointer died back in the 90's sometime and he showed me pictures and a magazine article from back in the day

Excellent call. Pointer was certainly the biggest dude I can remember.

However, Santa Barbara didn't make it to the finals that year. They played Anaheim with QB George Fraser and FB Tom Fitzpatrick in the semifinals and got crushed 42-7. Pointer was huge, but he wasn't exactly nimble. By the second quarter his teammates often had to help him up after plays. I also believe he played only DL. Fitz ran over him so many times that Big Bob probably passed away 30 years later with Fitz's cleat marks still on his chest.

I was a senior at Anaheim that year, and I can still remember it was about 40 degrees below zero that night at the L.A. Coliseum.

Keith Van Horne 6'6" 265 lbs. - FUHS, USC & Chicago Bears (1st round) 1981 - 93.
Image

Hoby Brenner - 6'4" 240 lbs. - FUHS, USC & New Orleans Saints (3rd round) 1981 - 93.
Image

No way these guys were 265 and 240 lbs. (maybe when they were 16 years old). Keith played Super Bowl XX at well over 300 lbs. and Hoby weighed-in at around 285 lbs. when he started for the Saints.

Donny Goodman from HBHS --->USC---> CSUN - was close to 6'9 380 in HS. Class of 1987. Makes these guys look like WRs.

How do you go from USC to Cal State University Northridge?

Unless, of course, you meant the California Sun . . .
