What are your thoughts about the possibility of him getting off with "probation, $40,000 fine, and community service?"
At first blush, I roll my eyes and I'm tempted to blame "investigation cooperation gone crazy." The man was a DEPUTY SHERIFF who abused the badge, for crying out loud. There is NO punishment I would think is harsh enough short of death or some sort of mutilation.
But
FRANK MICKADEIT in today's Register has an interesting perspective on that kind of punishment and what it would/could do to someone like Haidl:
Quote:
Just six years ago, a federal appellate court upheld an unusual sentence by Judge Vaughn Walker, he of current Prop. 8 fame. Walker sentenced a guy who stole U.S. mail to: 1) observe patrons visiting the "lost or missing mail" window; 2) write letters of apology to victims; 3) deliver lectures to local schools; and 4) stand in front of a post office with a sandwich-board sign that said, "I stole mail; this is my punishment."
Some of this sentence was with rehabilitative intent, some with an intent to shame. I don't doubt Haidl will never do this again, nor that he has been plenty shamed publicly. But at least one element of the Walker sentence – delivering lectures – would seem to satisfy Guilford's desire that it not be easy or comfortable for Haidl, while also recognizing his physical limitations.
