I didn't quote that. I'm the one who posted it originally. But thanks for bringing that up. There's almost never a good reason for a person to quote himself. Besides being redundant, it's generally considered uncool.
Crayegg covered it pretty well. If you're replying to the post directly above yours, there's no reason to quote it unless you're quoting maybe a phrase - not even a sentence, usually - because you want to point out the wording. And notice that by my saying Crayegg's name, you know exactly what post I'm referring to. A lot of unnecessary quotes can be avoided by simply saying who or what you're replying to.
It's also pretty rare that you'd need to quote an entire post. You're usually only replying to a sentence or two, so the proper use of the function would be to cut out all but the little part you're replying to. I removed a quote (of the post directly above it) on the Sports board yesterday that must have been a screen and a half long that was followed by a reply that was only one sentence. If your reply is shorter than what you're quoting you're usually quoting too much or your post isn't contributing to the conversation. And that business with quoting an entire post and highlighting the little part you're replying to is just wrong on a few levels.
I don't know where this board's obsession with quoting came from but it's completely overused. Besides very often making the threads harder to read, it makes them less interesting by encouraging lazy and pointless replies and very often throws threads off topic. Some boards don't even allow it and I've considered joining them.
Don't look at me, I just work here.
