Texas bans sanctuary cities

Postby John Q. Public » Sun May 07, 2017 9:09 pm

Over the objections of the Police Chiefs of Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, Fort Worth, San Antonio and the Texas Police Chiefs Association.

The Texas bill, known as S.B. 4, will prohibit cities from declaring themselves “sanctuary cities” and refusing to cooperate with federal officials on immigration enforcement.

It also directs local law enforcement officials to enforce immigration laws alongside their regular duties.

Police departments in Texas have been largely against the bill. The police chiefs of Houston and Dallas published an op-ed in the Dallas Morning News last week calling it a “burden” on local law enforcement agencies.

This will be challenged in the courts. It's overkill. Why can't the two sides get together and practice a little give and take?

I don't like the sentence about local law enforcement officials enforcing immigration laws, alongside their regular duties. That's not really necessary. It's not their job, (at least until that law goes into effect). We just need them to cooperate with those who are supposed to have that job, and to stop trying to undermine those efforts. Hold the ones ICE asks them to hold, and notify ICE about any illegals who have committed serious crimes in this country. Then let ICE make the arrest.
Things under Obama got a lot worse before they started to get better – and they only started to get better after the GOP took over half of Congress and put the brakes on spending.

What I don't understand is that ICE's detainers have been ruled unconstitutional three separate times by three separate courts yet they continue to use them and the Trump administration and now Texas continue to insist that police departments honor them. Makes no sense. Yeah, I know. But still.

Sorry, John, but there's an unwritten rule that says you don't get rewarded for losing a war...even Mexico.

I never understood the whole concept of Mexicans wanting to turn the southwest back to Mexico, did they not want to leave Mexico for a reason?
