The Best Team Ever

Postby Omar Bongo » Mon Dec 18, 2017 12:44 am

Most analysts are saying that this year's Monarchs are the best HS football team they've ever seen, so I decided to throw this together as a comparison. Since today's athletes are bigger, faster, and generally better coached, it's just my ranking of the top CIF-SS teams since 2000...

1. 2017 Mater Dei 15-0 MaxPreps National Human/Computer Ranking 1/1
oo.D-1 Champ/Open Div. State Bowl Champ
2. 2013 St John Bosco 16-0 3/1 Pac-5 Champ/Open State Champ
3. 2016 St John Bosco 13-2 5/2 D-1 Champ/Open State Champ
4. 2016 Mater Dei 13-1 9/3 D-1 Finalist
T5. 2008 Centennial 15-0 6/- Inland Champ/D-1 State Champ
Ooo2015 Centennial 14-1 5/2 Pac-5 Champ
T7. 2015 St John Bosco 13-1 6/4 Pac-5 Finalist
Ooo2017 St John Bosco 11-3 8/3 D-1 Finalist
T9. 2009 Servite 14-1 4/3 Pac-5 Champ/D-II State Champ
Ooo2011 Santa Margarita 13-2 23/10 Pac-5 Champ/D-1 State Champ
11. 2010 Servite 14-1 7/- Pac-5 Champ
12. 2004 Mission Viejo 14-0 2/- D-II Champ

2001 Poly and 2004 Mission Viejo are no worse than third and fourth, imo. 2003 Westlake gave up 8 points per game and should be way up there. 2002 Los Alamitos and 2010 Edison are up there. Lots of great Hart and Canyon teams from the early 2000s I can't remember off the top of my head.

If you mean 2009 Edison, they would be #13...

The rankings are a "what if" those teams from different years could meet. The teams you mention dominated their peers, but I just don't think the players on teams from 15 years ago are on a par with today's athletes...

I did the project a matchup function on each of those teams and put the scores / MOV next to each v the 2017 MD team.

The further back you go, the worse the comparison becomes using the computer. I think that has something to do with inflation of the ratings numbers each year more so than the actual relative strength of each team.

It might be fun to put MD up against the historical best teams nationwide to see what that would show. Using this same system, I'm thinking they'd be all-time best in the country.

IMPORTANT NOTE(from Calpreps): Projected scores involving teams from different years should be taken with a very large grain of salt. While it can be fun to see, for example, how your school this year would have done against your school's 2004 team...obviously, there just isn't a way to know that. Our system works on a scale where a team rated a 0 is the average team nationwide. So, a team rated a 21 is 3 TDs better than an average team, but there's absolutely no way to say whether a team rated a 21 in 2017 is better or worse than a team rated a 19 in 2005, mainly because (needless to say!) no teams from 2017 have played any teams from 2005. In other words, there's no way to determine if the entire scale (the country as a whole) is up a bit or down a bit in a particular season.

No doubt, only guy on the DLS team that could compete at MD level was number 51, they need more guys like him. Did you guys see with he did to the big O tackle on the extra point ?

After watching HSFB for almost 50 years I have seen some pretty good teams. However with the radical changes in High School sports I am not sure you could really compare teams adequately from one year to the next. I have seen some very good SJB, CC Servite and CC teams but without them playing each other it's unfair to compare. I do not think a Grootegood team would stand a chance against this years team as an example. This team was special.

I would like to thank the entire program, coaches, players, non starters, water personnel, team doctors, team
trainer and dietitian, fans and anyone else I may have missed. They put it all together to make it a memorable season
and brought the trophy home for many long time watchers (since68). There will always be talk remember.......
he was the best I have ever seen.

That's exactly what I discussed in a post about a week ago.

In 2001, two truly great Long Beach Poly and De La Salle teams played in what was called the game of the century. That De La Salle team had a power rating of 52.4, or about the same as Paraclete, Bishop Amat and Gardena Serra did this year. That Poly team was a 45.2, the same as Norco or Vista Murrieta this year.

Anyone who thinks those equivalencies are accurate needs to be medicated and institutionalized. We can "create-a-match-up" all we want, but if the teams are from different years, it means nothing.

But, MDDad, we have about 8 months of the doldrums, so, we have to discuss something, right? :bonk:

Seriously though, your right it's meaningless. It's too hard to statistically level the electronic field to make a meaningful comparison.

I'll start working on a neural network to hash this out. You guys up for funding the venture? LOL

Didn't they do this in one of the later Rocky movies a simulated computer game?

That's nothing. I ran into a Servite parent today who told me that a secret meeting has been called in the basement of the Servite administration building for this Friday at midnight. There it will be announced that any player wishing to play for the school will receive free tuition, a $10K stipend per month, a permanent home in Anaheim Hills or Villa Park, and a ring for each finger for the player and his parents (i.e. 30 rings), whether or not the team wins a championship. Furthermore, the school has hired 30 NASCAR drivers to bring every player to school in a race car of his choosing.

See how easy that is, credo?

That team and this year's Monarchs are the two best CIF-SS teams ever...MD wins 7 of 10

Can you please tell me how to apply for this mythical aid at MD? It would really help out. Is there a secret website or some code word?

ya probably the best out of all the teams to come from the Southern Section, but I wonder if best in state history, better than the best DLS team of the past. Also, was the 2013 Bosco team made up of any key transfers just like this 2017 MD benefited from a few transfers?

the 2013 Bosco team was the Hired Gun Transfer team

LA Times 2014
"The Braves' contingent of 20 football transfers included six players who became eligible in October after sitting out about a month of the season. They joined a trio, including top college prospect Jaleel Wadood, who came from Lakewood High the year before.

Coach Jason Negro didn't hesitate to accept the newcomers onto his roster. He views the movement of high school athletes in terms of supply and demand.

"It is a parent's prerogative where they want to put their child," he said. "If we are offering the type of program they are looking for, that's important for us to welcome kids with open arms.""

Yes, by a factor of more than double.
