Re: New Coaches Thread 2019

Districts and schools have made it work in the past for coaches being able to bring in years of service. I know Capo got burned by that many years ago when Blankenship came in and left after a couple years. I had heard from a pretty good source that they weren't getting applicants, which was a bit o...

Re: New Coaches Thread 2019

He's not a teacher and the facilities at Mesa are pretty good. Brand new stadium and more field space than most schools.

Capo is still sitting without a coach. That is still amazing to me.

Re: Mission Viejo Football Pipeline

I believe the Cowboys don't exist anymore.

I think there is a bit of a difference between bringing in a youth coach on your staff (something coaches have tried with very mixed results for years) and starting your own Youth team where you and staff are on the board

Re: Mission Viejo Football Pipeline

At least CIF stepped in quickly and told them no Mission coach may be a part of the board. We'll see if that actually slows MV down though...

Re: Mission Viejo Football Pipeline

Can't believe that this is where we are with HS football these days, but really have to wonder about the logos/trademarks that have to be being violated here!

And they have the gaul to complain that we were "spying" on their youth camp!

Yep SK80, that's the way it is now. Not what my wife signed up for and not really paying me any more money, but stuff you feel obligated to do to be competitive

Re: New Coaches Thread 2019

Our head coach is the old man of our district since he has finished 3 seasons here. 4 OC jobs still unfilled at this point I think. Capo, Esperanza, SM and Mesa. The demands on coaches have really changed over the last decade. There was a time not long ago when you worked during the season and then ...

Re: Did the creation of the Trinity League help cause some of the problems plaguing HS sports?

Fair enough. However I don't think the stadium thing is as big a deal as you might. And I would argue that the arms race in the Trinity has gone way beyond football. SM certainly has tried to do everything it can to attract kids from South County but is likely at a bit of a disadvantage given its lo...

Re: Did the creation of the Trinity League help cause some of the problems plaguing HS sports?

Buck I disagree. The other schools in the Trinity at one time or the other over the past decade have all been a part of what is going on. Before Bosco was what it is today, Servite won with kids from all down the freeway, SM has been putting lots of money into its facilities and firing coaches, JSer...

And none of this is to say that there aren't a myriad of other factors contributing to the changes. Just that the creation of the Trinity may have played a role, and I think, a large one.

Did the creation of the Trinity League help cause some of the problems plaguing HS sports?

I'm a proponent of creating separate public/private playoff divisions not because I believe that private schools win CIF too often or some such, but because I believe that public and private schools play by different rules when it comes to students attending school. Privates, to the best of my knowl...

Re: South Coast League 2019

Capo still hasn't found a coach and the biggest surprise to me is that people aren't applying for that job. Trabuco got filled right away, but Capo is still vacant? The lower level and returning talent favors MV, SC and Tesoro and its not even close.

Re: Congrats Costa Mesa HS!

"Open borders" would be a combination of NMUSD getting their funding via property taxes and thus happy to let anyone who wants to leave the district do so, and the HBUSD being based on funding per student so happy to take in anyone who wants to be there. Kids for years have been leaving th...

Re: Congrats Costa Mesa HS!

Irvine, NM and Laguna Beach in OC are all Basic Aid (property tax based funding vs state tax money). Not many areas have enough of a base to go that route.

Re: Congrats Costa Mesa HS!

Keep in mind the school only has 1200 HS kids. Even when you have a good group of athletes, depth is always going to be an issue. Throw in the historical challenges of being in a district where you could opt to go to CdM or Newport and it becomes a bit easier to see why success hasn't been easy. I d...

Congrats Costa Mesa HS!

Off the beaten path perhaps but a cool item of note: Costa Mesa HS which opened in 1958 won its first ever boys basketball title this week. Added a girls basketball and girls water polo title to that as well. Pretty awesome winter sports season.

Re: CIF-SS committee will look at potential changes to transfer rules 2019

Neutral sites other than a championship game would draw worse than the current system. Keep in mind most games being played are not D1 matchups. Its Yucaipa vs Segerstrom. Its Laguna Beach going to the central coast. Neutral site games are a pain to secure and would be a terrible draw. Battle of the...
