Re: Villa Park kicker drafted by Miami Dolphins.

This is pretty cool given the very low percentage of HS FB players that ever make a pro roster.

Re: US Coal Exports are up 60.3%

As the numbers above that broman posted indicate, despite the increase in coal exports, there are not many new jobs coming to the coal industry. The original article refers to the more efficient means of mining. Translated that means automation. What Trump promised was more coal mining jobs. What he...

Re: China announces tariffs on 128 commodities

It's not just the tariffs either. It's a change in purchasing and that change could be more permanent than we would like. Take soybeans (https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-05-04/soy-source-gives-true-taste-of-mnuchin-s-good-china-talks). Seems like a minor issue to stop buy soybeans from t...

Re: Anybody going to be watching the State of the Union Address?

OK ... so I didn't really like economics in college so perhaps I have a few things wrong academically. I view the corporate tax cuts as a good thing, but it's just one of the levers that helps drive economic improvement. If that's the only lever you pull, no, it won't work. Corporations will simply ...

Re: Why the Stock Market Doesnt Like Republicans

I stated that the market loves Trump. I stand by that statement. Why? Because the few things Trump has been consistent on have all favored business. Removing restrictive regulations, reducing the corporate tax rate and appointing business friendly members to key posts. All of these things are target...

Re: Anybody going to be watching the State of the Union Address?

What do you think it means to be a fiscal conservative anyway? I don't believe in pure tricke-down economics, but I do believe a corporate tax cut will help the economy and improve the employment and earnings outlook as a result. That doesn't mean that the only way to improve or fix the economy is t...

Re: Anybody going to be watching the State of the Union Address?

I personally believe we should hold our elected officials to a higher standard. They are the leaders of our country and should exemplify leadership in all facets of what they do and say, both in their public and personal lives. That's why I have so much trouble with Trump. The trouble is, most Ameri...

Re: Anybody going to be watching the State of the Union Address?

Well, I think one point worth making is that what this guy says is generally not to be believed. If that means pointing out every single lie he tells so be it. I'd like to know what happened to that "higher standard" we're all supposed to use when judging the conduct of our elected offici...

Re: "the inevitable disaster that will be the Trump Administration"

Very few people care much about the National Debt nor do they understand the long term implications of it. Heck, they don't even understand why their own credit card debt is bad for them. They'd rather have the shiny new toy. That they have more in their own paycheck is all that matters.

Re: Wages Rise and 200,000 Jobs Added

You'll get some resistance on whether or not we're headed in the right direction, but you're correct...it doesn't matter who turned the ship around - not to me anyway. What's important is the decisions that were made, and an objective analysis of whether or not they were helpful. I think it's hard ...

Re: Anybody going to be watching the State of the Union Address?

Normally I can agree with what you write Not4u, but here I think you're mistaken. If there's a problem with the truth then the person stating the falsehood is at fault not the one who points out the lie. In this case the main reason I'm "opposed" to trump is his constant lying about every...

Re: Trump Tax Cut

I'm all for corporations giving bonuses, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they just carved out a portion of the planned bonuses and called them special bonuses due to the tax cut for the publicity. I love how AT&T made a public statement about bonuses while quietly laying off workers.

Re: High School Sports are being Ruined

Great thread. A few thoughts. 1) While Texas coaches may be making a stand against club teams, there is a bit of a secret. The Allen Eagles have an entire development program using a network of coaches that builds talent to feed their team. The number of kids that are signed up for football is nearl...

Re: Wages Rise and 200,000 Jobs Added

Trump didn't pass any major policy or change anything significant that in and of itself caused the economy to become better. Stocks went up on speculation he would favor business and he has. It's easy to see when you look at the trend lines that this trend began well before Trump took office and has...

Re: Why the Stock Market Doesnt Like Republicans

It's more of a market correction caused by profit takers more than investors. They bought in as the market was rising and sold at the first sign of a dip, causing a further drop. All triggered by a healthier than expected jobs report. Trump is good for business and being good for business is good fo...

Re: Anybody going to be watching the State of the Union Address?

I know a lot of people who are hung up on all the "lies" Trump tells as though anyone really cares. The majority of the general public really doesn't care if the tax cut was "the biggest" or "one of the biggest" or if the crowds who came to his inauguration were huge or...

Re: "the inevitable disaster that will be the Trump Administration"

It's popular to blame the consumers of news for the swing and I can see that argument. Follow the money. News programs received higher ratings if they provides something entertaining, and that isn't always news. While that is TV news primarily, it's spread to other forms. I think a more likely culpr...

Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey cartoon, has died. I used to read that one every Sunday, when I still took the Sunday paper. I haven't read a comic strip in years.

Ikea Founder Ingvar Kamprad dead at 91. I can't tell you how many pieces of Ikea furniture I've assembled. Sad to see him go, but I'm pretty sure I cursed him under my breath more than a few times. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2018/01/28/ikea-founder-ingvar-kamprad-dies/1072923001/

Re: Saaaayyyy! What's this button do?

Not that long ago I learned of the root cause of a major outage. A guy noticed an error code on a systems console after planned maintenance. It was the middle of the day and everything was working fine, but he called up the company that made the unit to find out what the code meant and how to fix it...
