Re: 2011 Santa Margarita Eagles - Last Legitimate D1/Pac5 Champion?

If anyone wants to know the genesis of all this Bosco/MD nonsense you need to go back to what was happening at Gardena Serra starting about 10-15 years ago when the Diocese of LA began pumping large sums of money into Serra's athletic program for tuition subsidies at the expense of the 21 other 11-m...

Re: Transfer News? It’s that time of year again!

Ahhh, no. There's no grade inflation at Santa Margarita and there isn't a 6th period football PE which allows kids to focus on only 5 classes either. Kids flunk out every year - even good athletes that you regret seeing leave the program. Grade inflation wasn't there to save them, and grade inflatio...

Re: Did the creation of the Trinity League help cause some of the problems plaguing HS sports?

Yes. It did. When MD was in the South Coast league, SM in the Sea View and Servite in the Golden Goose Leagues they only needed to be talented enough to compete and win against those teams. When the 4-team Serra/ 4-team Del Rey arrangement was formed in 1999 there still really wasn't THAT must diffe...

Re: A Bosco JSerra D1 final

You don't understand the SM psyche. A few wins over MD and MV over a 10 year period are worth far more than consecutive wins over JSerra. Even losses to JSerra don't hurt the way losses to MD or Servite or Mission Viejo do. Just a fact, Jack. Most diehard SM fans know which years exactly SM has beat...

Re: A Bosco JSerra D1 final

Rich Fisher isn't the answer. He isn't SM's worst coach - that honor goes to Rick Curtis - but every SM coach not named Fisher or Curtis was able to pull off at least one significant upset and more than likely no bad losses each year. Beating JSerra last year by a point just isn't good enough. Losin...

Re: Week 1 2018 ~ Game Thread

MV dominated for the first quarter and a half building a 13-0 lead, but from about the 5 minute mark in the 2nd quarter it was a different game. MV had a few drive stalling flags in the first half but SM's 2nd half penalties didn't help them at all - one negated a long KO return, and two really unti...

Re: No more playing not true high schools

California's bureaucractic culture is notorious for legislating unwanted behavior out of private citizens and institutions through increasing regulation if shaming and ostracizing doesn't work. And now it's entering new territory into the world of legislating behavior out of private schools that are...

Re: Stir the pot

A few comments on Eric. First and foremost he's an LA City Section guy. He graduated from an LA City Section school and that's where his heart is. This is why he'll always have at least one LA Cith Section team in his Southland Top 25 regardless of how bad the section is. Eric used to be compensated...

Re: Best High School QB ever from O.C.?

Carson gets unfairly knocked a bit because of the Division V titles but what many forget or are too young to know is that the Sea View League was playing at a Division 2 level through the 1990's. Think about the teams that were perennial OC Top 5 and CIF title teams in the 90's: Mater Dei, Los Al, E...

Re: Public and Private D1

Please stop with the inaccurate example of Bishop Gorman using the Santa Margarita model. Bishop Gorman was a small inconsequential Catholic school that opened in downtown Las Vegas in 1954. For five decades it was a small and inconsequential innercity school far from whatever suburban wealth existe...

jb814, I can promise you that if you go to the tennis coach and tell him/her that you need financial aid you will get a financial aid award. it's usually determined in the spring or summer for the following school year. You're either wealthy enough that the mere thought of requesting tuition discoun...

Re: The new game

Technically true, but if you go to the Diocese of Orange's website it identifies seven Catholic high schools in the geographic area of the Diocese:

Connelly, Rosary, St.Michael's Prep, Servite, Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and JSerra.

Re: The new game

As to Loyola, they've had a unique situation for decades because of their huge endowment which, fortunately for them, heavily subsidizes the tuition for all students not just athletes. It's a function of a school being old enough to have processed 4-5 generations of alums. As a result, Loyola's tuit...

Re: D1 Playoff Thread - Predictions

Every time somebody mentions LBP leading up to a bid game they use the words "better talent". And when they lose they use the word "outcoached". What they neglect to understand is how inconsistent and often times bad the Poly offensive and defensive lines have been going back 10, 15 and 20 years. Ev...

Re: D1 Playoff Thread - Predictions

Going with the favorites. The spreads per Calpreps projections: MD (-56) JSerra (-14) Mission (-14) Chaminade (-15) SJB (-32) RC (-10) SM (-20) CC (-29) I have no reason not to stick with the favorites even with JSerra and SM on the road. The JSerra spread is probably a touchdown too high but the ca...

Re: Division 1 Playoffs

Notwithstanding the 12-7 loss at home to MV earlier this year, the good Poly - the one that plays at the friendly confines of the Vet and on that turf - is 14 or more points better than the bad Poly you often see on the road against quality opponents. Sure, teams generally play better at home, but S...

Re: Division 1 Playoffs

First an observation. In your bracket JSerra gets a much more favorable draw for round 1 and the quarters than Santa Margarita. If I'm SM I'm trading places with the Lions all day long. In the new playoff system implemented last year, is it still essential what the league finish is if there are 18 t...

Re: New playoff format idea

It would be a shame to see an elite private/public schism as the prospects of the top Trinity or Mission League teams squaring off against LB Poly or Centennial or Mission Viejo in the playoffs is fun to think about. Effectively what you have today is primarily a private Division I with Mission, CC,...
