Re: Changing Democracy

Wabash, either provide the evidence that the reason the electoral college was instituted was because of slavery - by giving an objective source such as the Federalist papers or language from the actual people involved (and not by some revisionist Mickey Mouse junior assistant professor of history at...

Re: Changing Democracy

Sure, I’m familiar with the 3/5 compromise. I just don’t see what it has to do with the electoral college topic we're discussing. (As an aside, I just finished listening to a lecture on the French and Haitian Revolution. In a similar fashion, slave owners in Haiti wanted to preclude slaves from voti...

Re: Changing Democracy

Slavery has nothing to do with it, historical revisionism notwithstanding Various states have chosen to utilize a winner take all protocol, and not all of them do. They can change it if they want but the purpose behind an electoral college remains. There has not been any reason to override a popular...

Re: Changing Democracy

What could I possibly see on a map other than geographical features? I am going to assume that you do understand that maps are used for illustrating more than simply geographical features. You can see evidence of the political divide in the United States in the map below (assuming I am able to get ...

Re: Changing Democracy

If you do not see a divide, then I would encourage you to look at that map once again. When I said The name chosen in 1789 was "The United States" and the states as entities are entitled to representation as are the individual citizens...................... Luca You responded with “That idea is not ...

Re: Changing Democracy

I didn’t use the analogy of the map to imply that empty land was equivalent to votes. It was to point out that only 20 of the 50 states supported Clinton. The electoral college and the Senate are actually based on a similar principle: that states as entities are entitled to a role, just as individua...

Geez, you know your Constitution. I thought it came after the part about noise pollution.

Y’know, Wabash, the difference between you and Kevin Hart is he’s trying to be funny...........Luca

Re: Changing Democracy

Great, that's a start. Now show me where in the Federalist Papers it states that the electoral college was proposed for the benefit of the institution of slavery, and the quotes from those Founding Father's verifying that....................................Luca

Re: Changing Democracy

Believe what you want, as always. You might try reading the "legit" Federalist Papers and the actual ("legit") words of those involved if you're really interested.

The electoral college was not instituted because of slavery so your point is "illegit". That's it.

Re: Changing Democracy

You've been reading the internet again, Wabash. You should read actual history books or at least the Federalist Papers instead. The electoral college was not established because of slavery. The question remains why the electoral college was "legit" previously but not now. Pagan, can you produce any ...

Re: Changing Democracy

The question is not whether or not one perceives them as having sufficient value, it's the fact that the Constitution entitles them to sufficient representation such that they are not in the aggregate dominated by a few larger states. The name chosen in 1789 was "The United States" and the states as...

Re: Changing Democracy

I wouldn’t call it "minority rule." Rather, "minority representation." Look at a map of the US in the 2016 election and see how many states favored the President as opposed to Clinton. 3: 2 in favor of the President. If you can only get 40% of the states to support your election you haven’t done a v...

Re: Changing Democracy

The republic was designed that way for the purpose of making a difference. That’s how smaller population states were enticed to join the union in 1789 without the fear that larger states such as New York and Virginia would dominate them. They feared a “tyranny of the majority.” So the House of Reps ...

Re: Some polling nuggets

You know, Fordama, I only responded to this thread initially when JQ – I think it was – made an offhand comment that " Republicans are stupid ", or something to that effect. I also cannot remember what philosopher – it may have been Wittgenstein or even Einstein – once said that the measure of intel...

Re: First Charges filed by Mueller

So you still believe in the super secret commie conspiracy with Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale in the Trump Tower? Or was it Professor Plum with the wrench in the Billiard Room? Great Scott, Holmes, that must mean that Mueller is part of the coverup. It goes deeper than anyone knew. They're trying...

Re: First Charges filed by Mueller

I think I see the beginnings of insight here. Unless I’m wrong I sense that there is a sullen admission that the "collusion" issue is dead, the belief that the President directly or through his representatives conspired with "Russian agents" (God, this reminds me so much of the ‘50s, or a Tom Clancy...

Re: First Charges filed by Mueller

Because after two years of investigation there was no proof of any criminal activity. Most people including me don’t “like” the man, but he was fairly elected President and there was no crime. So the rational individual moves on, as they say............Luca

WHOA! There were “individuals”? And they had ties ? And they thought information deleterious to Clinton would benefit them? Good lord. Somebody get a rope!
