The evolution of Atticus Finch

Post by Hanna » Tue Jul 14, 2015 12:41 pm

Unless you've been in a cave the past week, or so, you know that Harper Lee's new book "Go set a Watchman" portrays Gregory... er.. Atticus Finch as a segregationist. For many who knew the south of the 50s, this is not a surprise. This was the prevailing stand among southern lawyers.

Harper Lee said that she based Atticus Finch on her father Amasa Coleman Lee, and she wrote that book in 1957. It was rejected by her publisher.

She then went back and wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird" in late 50s. By then her father started to change his mind about segregation and it was that new image of her father that she described in Mockingbird.

I read Go Set a Watchman last year and from what I understand it was never supposed to be published. At the time it was published Harper Lee was in solid stages of dementia and said to be “likely talked into publishing the book” for the monetary gain of others.
