Wondering if talk about the tariff should go in the "Daily WTF" thread, since it's just one more of them. Every president since Nixon has had a steel tariff but, as far as I know, they've all been targeted and I don't know if any have been this big. I think this is the only blanket, 25% on everybody one.

So. Tariffs raise prices, get ready for stuff made from steel to cost more. Trade wars raise prices, so get ready for imports to cost more. And get ready for beer and soft drinks and anything else that uses aluminum to cost more. Or for manufacturers to switch to alternatives. Which will be another WTF on probably another forum when Trump fans discover that their Bud Light is in plastic cans.

Fortunately, Americans don't buy many imports, steel products, soft drinks or beers.

These are just Trump's opening negotiating positions. They are not in effect yet.

Good point. His follow through is atrocious. Like his current back pedaling on guns. He met with the NRA. The NRA leadership emerged and told its members that Trump was back on the leash and their guns were safe.

It continues to be open season on children.

A little speculation. We've yet to see the full extent of Trump's business holdings.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he benefits from the current market volatility.

That's cute how you think he has a cogent plan of action.

Hey, how's that 401k doing for you now, Professor? 2.93% lopped off in a day.

I don't know about the economy as a whole, but I think it's safe to say that Donald now owns the stock market.

The AP has deleted a breaking tweet because it incorrectly stated that China had raised tariffs on some US goods. China says it might raise such tariffs. A corrected tweet is coming.

The way I look at it, I'm still playing with the house's money until it gets back down to 18,000 like it was before the election.

They're trying to figure out how to blame it on Obama.

I thought the guidelines have been pretty clear for the last decade.

Jan. 2009 through Nov. 2016:
When the market is up, credit goes to Obama.
When the market is down, blame goes to Bush.

Nov. 2016 to present:
When the market is up, credit goes to Obama.
When the market is down, blame goes to Trump.

Did Obama make rash, off the cuff (or on the crapper) pronouncements that would have an effect on the markets?

I love the desperation of Trump and his base giving him the credit for Obama's last quarter of stock market and employment gains

When the market takes two dives totaling almost 12%, that are directly related to Trump's policy announcements, the blame goes directly to Trump. Continuing a trend that started 6 or 7 or 8 years ago only meant he hadn't broken anything. Any recovery from this interuption or any more damage will now belong to Donald.

The only way this makes sense is if you haven't made any new purchases since Obama left office.

So what you're saying is, credit to Obama and blame to Trump. Thanks, that's exactly what my guidelines stated.
