We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of money.
How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money?

My minor was computer programing, some 30 years ago. Remember Fortran, Cobol and Basic?
One of the sessions was to create a program detailing how to program your body to take one step. Another was to pick up a glass, and take a drink of water. Those acts proved to be immensely complicated, and no one got it right until after many tries.
That program to have the boy write a few words was amazing and way before it's time.

I hate to be the spoiler but it's just a glorified music box. It's very impressive but it's just a machine. Engineers have been designing them for centuries but we don't call them computers.

This was called a computer because it was/is programmable.

TROG SAID:

"Remember Fortran, Cobol and Basic?"

I remember all 3 and was proficient in all three. Basic was fun cobal was boring.

Amazing, but not quite a computer. It doesn't actually compute--the output is the same as the input. It's like a clock in which you can exchange some parts to change the speed.

It is amazing, though. The amount of workmanship and detail is stunning to me--just the patience alone to design and build it seems staggering.

Trog--don't forget PASCAL!

Basically true but nonetheless it was programmable. A first for the time period.

That's about as far back as I want to remember. If I never see another DOS command, it'll be too soon.

8086 'puters, MS-DSO 1.1, 300 baud modems. Waiting 10 minutes to boot up. Finally the 10 meg HD (you will never need anything larger) ..

My Basic class was the best. The language was new and nobody, including the teacher, knew it. Our assignment was "make it do something." We spent the quarter hacking with what we'd learned from COBOL and FORTRAN and sharing our experiences. Everybody got an A.
