The Duke would be proud. His namesake airport is on the grow again.
John Wayne Airport (SNA) is an invaluable pocketport serving Orange County, California, to an airport that’s far more convenient for lots of flyers in the OC than Los Angeles International (LAX). To better accommodate passenger growth, the Orange County Board of Supervisors recently awarded a $26-million contract for a new quarter-of-a-million-plus square foot facility to be dubbed Terminal C.
The main Riley Terminal was designed in the late 1980s to handle 8.4 million flyers per year. Demand dictates there needs to be more room, the ability to accommodate 10.8 million passengers each annum by 2011. Thus, the need for C.
Terminal C will be a six-gate affair. It will have new security checkpoints, baggage carousels, concessions and such. Look for it, and a new parking structure at John Wayne Airport, to be ready in 2011. They’re both part of the field’s Airport Improvement Program.
