SANTA ANA – Officials at John Wayne Airport conducted an extensive search late Friday after someone reported seeing a passenger put a handgun into his carryon bag after clearing security.
At least one flight was canceled and seven were delayed because all passengers were required to undergo a second security check, even those already aboard planes, authorities said.
The search began about 6 p.m. after someone reported seeing the handgun, said Jennifer Peppin, a Transportation Safety Administration spokeswoman.
“The suspect passenger was searched and was found to carry no firearm, and a decision was made to rescreen everyone out of caution that that firearm wasn't left or hidden somewhere,” Peppin said.
Hundreds of passengers were required to undergo the second security screening, said airport spokeswoman Jenny Wedge.
The terminals were not evacuated.
