Anyone remembers the Long Beach horder?

Post by Hanna » Tue Jul 19, 2016 9:01 am

(Yea, I know Long Beach is not technically OC, but still..)

This was a woman who was a faculty member at a local college whose yard was really a mess. She clearly had some mental problem. I am talking some 20 years ago. I remember the neighbors finally decided to sue her at small claims court. Figured even if the maximum was $5,000 (I think) with 20 of them she could be faced with $100K. But I don't remember how it ended.

Elena Zagustin and she lived in Huntington Harbor (she was an engineering professor of mine at CSULB). Not only was there a bunch of trash in her yard, her father was found in tough shape amongst the piles of trash inside the house. She was also nailed for elder abuse.
The last I heard she was in Las Vegas.

Thank you. I thought it was a joke about her father but no, he was there

And... only in SoCal can such a house fetch $300K back in 1999...

I remember when I was a young lawyer making an appearance in Orange County seeing her name on the docket for the courtroom I was in. I looked around and didn't see her. After my case was done, I went to the elevators and she stepped out of the elevator I was about to board. I was afraid that she would recognize me and ask me to represent her.
The woman was brilliant but truly looney-tunes.
