Then: While animosity between political rivals is nothing new, in May, I write about the growing discomfort between 5th District supervisorial candidates Pat Bates and Cassie DeYoung. They've lived on the same Laguna Niguel street for years, visited socially, worshipped at the same church and once cross-promoted each others' candidacies. But by early 2006, each is clearly going to spend more than a million dollars to defeat the other – and things are getting nasty.

Now: Bates won Nov. 7, and in December the DeYoungs made a long-planned move to a house they had built in Monarch Beach. As for her political future, DeYoung told Erika, "We're looking at all the different options" and noted that a state Assembly seat is going to be open because Mimi Walters is running for state Senate. Final campaign tallies aren't due until Jan. 31, but in a statement filed just after the election, DeYoung said she had spent almost $3.9 million, about $3.75 million of it her own money. Bates reported spending about $1.5 million, roughly $670,000 of it her own money. Eddie Rose spent about $14,000 (apparently all of it his own money).
