Sheriff’s plan a bad idea, council says

Expanding Musick Jail to 8,000 beds said to be unjustified.

The City Council is unanimous: nearby Musick Jail should not be expanded to 8,000 beds.

The council started its Tuesday meeting with a study session on the Sheriff’s plans to expand the jail that lies near the Great Park and just over Irvine’s southern border.

Each member of the council took a moment to discuss how expanding the jail is a bad idea.

Larry Agran said there is "no justification whatsoever" for the bed increase.

He and other council members said the expansion seems like a way for the county to rent out surplus beds to other counties for a profit – namely Riverside County.

"Everything about this, to me, is a scheme," Agran said. "It will become a profit center for the county of Orange."

Mayor Beth Krom and City Manager Sean Joyce will discuss the expansion plans with the Sheriff’s Department.

I think some Council members are missing the bigger concern of local residents.
It is not as important whether the County makes a profit on surplus beds, as it is having 8,000 major felons within blocks of residential homes. The jail is already land-locked and crowded by commercial buildings. There is not enough space within the fence line to adequately maintain the security of such a large facility.
