The amazing Harvesters set another record with their 14th fashion show and luncheon Thursday in support of Second Harvest Food Bank – more than $1 million net proceeds.
Thanks were due, in large part, to Madaline Gordon and her husband, Stephen, who directed a $280,000 endowment to the Harvesters to fund the food bank's Kids Cafés through the Commercial Capital Bank Community Foundation. Even without the endowment, proceeds were up $240,000 over last year's.
"We have two challenges this year," said event co-chairwoman Carmela Phillips before the top-drawer fall show presented by South Coast Plaza luxury retailers. "We need to raise $6 million to outfit a warehouse made available to the food bank at El Toro Marine base, which will double the size of the nonprofit's capacity to feed the hungry."
Co-chairwoman Robin McMonigle addressed the other challenge. "The Harvesters have taken on support of the food bank's Kids Café program," she said, "which feeds children after school and costs $30,000 to operate each café annually." Food Café sponsors who were acknowledged included Carol and Joe Weller, Juliaand Mark Post and Dwight Manley.
Special thanks were given to Louis Vuitton Vice President Karen Watkins for hosting the Harvesters' underwriting party, Cartier's Caroline Jones for the champagne reception sponsorship, South Coast Plaza Director of Community Relations Kathryn Glassmyer for organizing the fashion show, and South Coast Plaza Managing Director Anton Segerstrom for his support of Second Harvest. Others recognized were underwriting chairwoman Heather Madden and silent auction chairwomen Karen Jaffe and Michelle Roth.
