JWA sees passenger-use increase for ninth month - DP 7/14/07

The number of passengers using John Wayne Airport in June increased compared with the same month in 2006, the ninth straight month passenger levels have climbed.

In June, a total of 900,969 people traveled through the airport, which was 5.7% more than in June 2006, according to airport statistics. The total number of aircraft operations — all takeoffs and landings — last month was 29,068, a decrease of 6.2% over the same month of 2006.

Total aircraft operations have gone down four months in 2006, with increases in February and March. The last time the passenger level was lower than the previous year was September 2006. So far in 2007, 4.9 million travelers have used John Wayne Airport.

" JWA will continue to grow and grow unless the pols in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa smarten up and use their influence to get a new airport built, pronto. A tiny northern part of Camp Pendleton is perfect and would yield an airport bigger than LAX . The Marines wouldn't even miss that piece of dirt. "

" It's time to lift the caps at JWA, extend the runway, and begin int'l flights to accomodate the needs of OC residents. It'll be cheaper in the long run and allow shorter commutes for all of us. Newport Beach et al have demonstrated their duplicity over airport policies when they tried to ram OCX down our throats. Nearly everything they've ever said about the need for OCX has been retracted when focused at JWA. Newport is a fine city to host an int'l airport. Bring it on! "

" I've always wondered what will happen when JWA reaches its annual passenger cap - on December 17. Will it be forced to close the rest of the year? Or simply owe millions in damages to local residents? "

" I know what we can do. Let's have a group hug of the civic leaders in Newport and Costa Mesa and have them all wish really hard that the airport won't expand. And, if that doesn't work (and it won't), let's have them give some cross looks at the airport and muble some more. What a bunch of eunuchs! Get on the phone with congress and get a new airport built, or just shut up and put double glass windows on your homes. "

" For the vindictive ones like Jeff, why don't go play in your Great Park. Oh I forgot, there's hardly any park left, plus lots of sprawl and traffic out in the former buffer zone. Please do enjoy the fine mess you voted for. The housing developers thank you for your short sighted myopia. "

" Thomas (is that you, Dire Nyre??), ignoring your redundant "short-sighted myopia" (#@!), if Newport et al had worked with South County instead of excluding them from the planning process then attempting to shove a massive airport down everyone's throats, then you wouldn't be whining now. You and your leaders failed. You thought all your money could buy an airport. Well..it only bought the Board of Supervisors...and look what happened. What fools..... Enjoy the noise and filthy exhaust. "

" Jeffey, is that you Leonard Kranser?. You NIMBYs would not step up to the plate in any capacity. No matter the size, layout, configuration of El Toro you opposed it no matter what! We were trying to get you to do your fair share rather than burden the rest of the region like the parasites you are. You wanted no part of the discussion about El Toro, unless it was non-airport, while John Wayne would have 100% of the burden. You are just like the illegal aliens who suck this country dry! Enjoy all the new South County sprawl! "
