Sexy QBs make the best QBs
See who the best-looking QB in NFL is – it's science!

Pro sports is one of the world's truest meritocracies, but labor economists at two universities have found a possible exception: NFL quarterbacks.
According to computerized facial analysis, NFL quarterbacks are uniformly gorgeous, suggesting that not everybody can grow up to be Joe Montana.

They studied facial symmetry -- which previous research has shown humans associate with attractiveness -- of all 32 starting quarterbacks, plus a couple of famous backups. While the average human has a 90 percent symmetrical face, the lowest-scoring NFL quarterback is above 96 percent. Meanwhile, the handsomest QBs were over 99 percent. The famously ugly Elephant Man scored in the mid-70s.

"It's insane, isn't it," said Jennifer VanGilder, a labor economist at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. She worked with Utah University economist David Berri, and said she was surprised by how extreme the QBs' scores were.

Why is this? VanGilder has two possibilities. One is that youth coaches have a profile of a quarterback in their mind, and the kids who fit the profile -- confident, popular, and with a face chiseled out of granite -- are more likely to be handsome. That sets kids on a course more than a decade before they ever play a televised game.

"There's a lot of literature that says better looking children are given more training and more attention," she said.

The other is that NFL talent evaluators are swayed by the same sub-conscious biases we all are. Her previous work on the topic found that the handsomest quarterbacks were paid more than less attractive, but similarly productive, quarterbacks.

"We're not saying beauty is getting you the job, but we've been socially trained to want to be around people that make us happy -- and more attractive individuals create a happiness for people," she said.

She said she hasn't studied whether facial symmetry could also correlate with the sort of skills that make a good quarterback -- strong bones, good health, etc.

She said she's considering moving on to other positions, or other sports, but no other position has quite the social component of an NFL quarterback.

Her findings often don't go over well with sports fans, she said. "As economists, we're merely interested in the numbers. Sports people are like, "No way!"

The famously ugly Elephant Man scored in the mid-70s. Jeez, if the Elephant Man is a 70, how ugly do you have to be to score in the 50's or 60's?

Her previous work on the topic found that the handsomest quarterbacks were paid more than less attractive, but similarly productive, quarterbacks. We've known this to be true for strippers for generations. Why shouldn't it also be true for quarterbacks?
I sure hope this study wasn't funded with our tax dollars. The next thing you know they'll want to do a study to develop new standards for gender.

I don't think this is true especially quarterbacks getting paid more based on looks. Eli Manning is the ugly duckling in a family that hit every branch on the ugly tree, and he's the highest paid QB in the league.

Wow, Notorious, I never saw a post deleted more quickly than you got rid of that one...probably a wise move.
