Most disappointing SoCal sports losses

Post by Charles »

Grew up listening to Chick Hearn, Vin Scully & Jerry Doggett, Dick Enberg (Rams and Angels), and Bob Miller (I even remember Jiggs McDonald who preceded Bob Miller.)
Someone once said “Losing hurts more than winning feels good.” To me, losing close games hurts a lot more than getting blown out or swept.
Be interested to see what other people thought the most disappointing losses in LA Sports History were.

Here are mine:

1969 Lakers lose to Boston in 7 games (Too young to remember this one.)
1972 USA loses to USSR Olympic Basketball (OK, this isn’t an LA team but that really hurt…another three seconds…another three seconds…another three seconds…)
1972 Lew Alcindor and the Milwaukee Bucks end Lakers 33 game win streak
1977 Dodgers lose to Yankees
1978 Dodgers lose to Yankees
1982 Dodgers lose to Giants (Last game of season off Joe Morgan home run.)
1984 Lakers lose to Boston in 7 games
1985 Dodgers lose to Cardinals (Game 6 Jack Clark home run)
1986 Angels lose to Boston (ALCS, one strike away from the pennant; Dave Henderson home run; contributed to Angel pitcher Donnie Moore’s suicide.)
2006 USC loses to Texas (Vince Young touchdown run)

Ya, that was the last one on my list. On top of that, it was played at "home" (sort of) at the Rose Bowl.
Unfortunately for USC they had a few other blown opportunities over the years. They lost to two or three huge underdogs which ruined otherwise practically perfect seasons - seasons which they seriously would have been national champs. I think they lost to UCLA, maybe Stanford, maybe one of the Oregons over three years. Had they won those games they might have had four or five national championships????
I think they would have beaten Miami a couple years ago.

I don't know. Some wins more than offset losses.
Especially if the wins come after the loss.

Kirk Gibson 9th inning pinch hit home run in Game 1 of 1988 Series with Scully setting it up on radio
Magic Johnson's all world performance against the 76rs
1981 Fernandomania World Series win
Lakers 2010 Game 7 win over Boston

All 4 of those things suck.

I would have to rank these losses by the LA Rams among my most disappointing sports losses.
My grandpa, dad, uncle, brother and I suffered through every playoff loss in the early - mid 70s. We even drove to Barstow in 77 when the playoff game didn't sell out so we could watch it on TV!

73 lost to Cowboys
74 lost to Vikings
75 lost to Cowboys
76 lost to Vikings
77 lost to Vikings
78 lost to Cowboys

Those were some painful losses...

i was not old enough to remember, and sadly a huge giant generation is not old enough to remember either, but when we lost the NFL, when the L.A. Metropolitan area lost the NFL which includes Orange County, unfortuneately nobody seems to care.
