New playoff format idea

Post by watchersince68 »

I touched on this in another thread. Why not consider an 8 team "super team" format division1+. Bump down the next 8 teams to next division playoff and so on down the line. This creates a 3 week playoff for only the "super"
division teams. Divide California in 4 sections Northern, central, southern and San Diego section for the state playoffs with northern playing central, Southern and San Diego in the other with the winners playing each other for State. Same amount of games and more chances for teams to win in the other divisions that are doormats in the D1.

Could something like this work?

Understand but that would leave a annual CC champion is that fair?

It would be a shame to see an elite private/public schism as the prospects of the top Trinity or Mission League teams squaring off against LB Poly or Centennial or Mission Viejo in the playoffs is fun to think about.

Effectively what you have today is primarily a private Division I with Mission, CC, Poly and a couple other publics joining the Trinity/Mission League dance. Are all of them willingly joining? I'm not sure San Clemente or Rancho Cucamonga or even Mission Viejo (there, I said it) really wants to be there after tasting lower division success or if Edison or Los Al ever want to again. This is kind of like the English Premier League where it's a badge of honor for a few days to be brought up then the reality of having to compete (facilities, quality numbers, money, marketing, etc.) kicks in. The downside of winning Division 2 is the prospect of being promoted and I'm nodding at you Upland. I also don't think the prospect of Loyola or Amat being relegated is something that would ever sit well with those programs. Same with LB Poly. I don't think they would ever want to not be in the same playoff division as Mater Dei. Division 2 is not in Poly's DNA, nor Amat's or MD's. I think Servite's fans are still embarrassed about being in D-5 and D-6 in the 90's. They want and need to be where MD is. Makes sense.

Would Rancho Cucamonga or San Clemente prefer to have a legitimate chance to play 14 games in D-2 or play for moral victories and 12 games in D-1? I think Gardena Serra would be a better fit in D-2 or D-3 like Oaks Christian or St. Francis.

Isn't "lower division success" kind of an oxymoron?

Can you not have success in NCAA Football or is that reserved only for the NFL?

No, only the NFL. But only the Super bowl winner, everyone else in the NFL is a failure, too.

Well, it depends what your goal is. Consider Calpreps' current top 32 teams in the state as determined by their computer formula, which is pretty fair I think:

Southern Division
1. Mater Dei
2. CC
3. SJB
4. MV
5. SMCHS
6. JSerra
7. Chaminade
9. Upland
11. Rancho Cucamonga
14. Servite
15. San Clemente
18. OLu
20. LB Poly
21. Valencia
22. Bishop Amat
25. Oaks Christian
26. Narbonne
28. La Habra
30. Murrieta Valley

Northern Division
8. Folsom
10. DLS
13. Pittsburg
19. Oak Ridge
23. San Ramon Valley
24. San Mateo Serra
29. Granite Bay
31. Carmichael Jesuit

San Diego Division
12. Mission Hills SD
16. Helix SD

Central Division
17. Fresno Central
27. Modesto Central Catholic
32. Stockton St Mary's

So you see the problem. You would have 7 of the top 8 and 19 of the top 32 teams in the state in one division, while in the SD and Central the top teams would have basically have byes to the final.

If the seeds held, the #2 through #7 teams would watch on TV while #8 Folsom, #12 Mission Hills and #17 Central battled it out for the right to get creamed by MD. Is that better than the current system?

A great playoff format would be,
Public schools vs public schools and private vs private.

Yes, how would it not fair?
Parent's can move into the district all they want. Parents do it all the time, for various reasons outside of sports. It's not CC's fault they have a great coach.

Big difference playing teams who offer bring certain players into their team with out living in a boundary and paying for their school. In a sense they are professional, just like kids on full rides in college.

By that definition, every kid who plays in a public school is also a professional.

Based on current calpreps ratings, here's what the Private School matchups would look like:

Mater Dei 95.3 v. Notre Dame SO 42
St. John Bosco 79.3 v. Bishop Diego 42.3
Santa Margarita 71.9 v. Cathedral 43.8
Jserra 70.4 v. St. Francis 45.3
Chaminade 69.9 v. Paraclete 49
Servite 62.9 v. Loyola 49.3
Lutheran 58.3 v. Serra 50.3
Bishop Amat 54.9 v. Oaks Christian 53

Here's what the top Public School matchups would look like:

Centennial 79.6 v. Cajon 48
Mission Viejo 72.1 v. Calabasas 48.5
Upland 67 v. Sierra Canyon 49.5
Rancho Cucamonga 65.9 v. Citrus Hill 49.9
San Clemente 59.9 v. Capistrano Valley 50.1
Poly 56.4 v. Charter Oak 51
Valencia 56.3 v. Murrieta Valley 51.7
Norco 52.9 v. La Habra 52.4

Would there be much doubt who would be playing for the championship in either?

First you must take into consideration MD will not be the top dog forever, HSFB is cyclical although runs of a quality team may go for a few years like CC and SJB or how about DLS, so they will not always be waiting to get creamed by MD.

Each Section would have their own round of playoffs of the best 8 teams, so there would be Sectional Champions. Something for them to be proud of by winning their section.
Then those meet for a 4 team 2 game playoff. North vs Central, South vs San Diego for more limited travel. Better than someone in an office somewhere deciding who should be in the state game.

No extra games needed so no complaints about too many games for the players.
AND it gives another 8 teams that did not play in the elite series to win a championship in a regular 16 game bracket, just at another level.

Problem 1, there aren't 8 elite teams, and 2, who decides which playoff bracket you get put in?

I'll decide who gets in, no problem.

And is it not better to allow the lower 8 teams that you know will not challenge for the crown to have a chance in the
next division down. Possibly 4 sacrificial lambs rather than 12.

You can't fill an eight-team elite bracket with only three teams. I tried for a couple hours last night, and it just doesn't work. You always end up five short.

The Southern Section has been doing it for years with sixteen, did you not take the higher math class
offered for just this? I think it's called "How to best infuriate a high school football coach and how to
enjoy the process"

So follow the NCAA and go with 4 teams in the Elite group.

MD
Bosco
Cen10
MV

But here's a better idea...take the top 16 rated teams NATIONALLY by Freeman or some other metric, and have a real national champion.

Here's what that bracket would look like

#1 Mater Dei v. #16 Lowndes (GA)
#8 Davis (IN) v. #9 Katy (TX)
#5 Cen10 v. #12 St. Francis (MD)
#4 American Heritage (FL) v. #13 Chaminade

#3 SJ Bosco v. #14 Sta Margarita
#6 St. Louis (HI) v. #11 Mission Viejo
#7 Bingham (UT) v. #10 St Xavier (OH)
#2 IMG (FL) v. #15 Allen (TX)

CA - 6
Tx - 2
UT - 2
FL - 2
GA - 1
HI -1
OH - 1
IN - 1

Which state has the best football??
