HB - Baseball
Edison - Football
FV - Used to be band
OV - Basketball?
West. / Marina - Umm?

That list is essentially correct, but that only applies to single sport athletes in HBUHSD. But leaves out the multi sport athletes, particularly those who play football. Those kids that play another sport and play football are welcomed with open arms. Edison is one of the smaller schools in the district, but is always at the top of the Sunset League in all sports because of one reason, Edison programs share their athletes. They stagger, intentionally coordinated, the times of their summer camps to accommodate the multi sport kids (FB at 8, Basketball/soccer at 10, baseball/volleyball/lax at 1). It’s actively encouraged by football program for players to play another sport- track, wrestling, basketball, lax

Hence why you see so many kids from Edison at all-CIF/league kids on multiple lists. Kids like Attencio (FB/BB) and Moradian (FB/Wrestling) thrive and succeed because of the environment of the entire athletic department’s coordination. Yes other schools have top tier volleyball and baseball program, but are they at the top of league standings in all sports? That is reason why Edison football and it’s other programs will always be competitive in the Sunset League.

The last three sport athlete I can recall at Edison played football, basketball, and volleyball and commuted from the CDM area, with his dad, leaving all his junior high friends behind.

OCF much will change with CDM coming into Sunset, agree? Kids in HB and FV may for a particular sport all head to one school (if they do not already) to take on the newcomers. Volleyball and Water Polo gonna be sick between HB, NH and CDM....

Edison ain’t bad either in WP/Swim,,,,

CDM replacing Marina, is a plus in FB,,,, but strength of the “conference” I think(?) with laguna beach too, improves everybody!

In these days of specializing and being forced by HS and club coaches to give up other sports, I'm not sure there is even a public school that a kid could attend and really star or be D1-caliber (or draftable-caliber in baseball/soccer) in 3 sports. The Bo Jacksons of the world may have gone by the wayside. Hopefully that's not the case.

Where did you find the league strength on calpreps? I see it as #17

I think with CDM in the league, Sunset goes way up. Look at the SV League, right behind Sunset. Formula does not make sense.....Marina (dead last in Sunset) and WB (second place in SV) in my opinion were pretty even last year based on the film I have seen. So the SV even being close to the Sunset means their formula is a mess and poor reference.
Analytics are not very good in this case.

I get an average of 17.1 for the Sunset LY. Substituting CDM (37) for Marina (1.2), the new average is 23.1. That slots as #11 per the link I posted showing the Southern Section leagues last year.

I'm missing something as both the new CIF division placement formula and leather helmet show the Sunset as #10 LY.

Bick,

I know the SGVL and Suburban Leagues very well, in fact back when there were old suspension helmets I used to coach in the area. I still think the Sunset is a better league than the SGVL, and with CDM even more so. Oh well get it done on the field.

I remember those helmets! Damn straps constantly pulling your hair out.

SGVL improved a lot last year with Paramount, Downey, Gahr and Warren - you could still give a slight nod to the Sunset w/ CDM now in the mix. Suburban is like #42 I think...way down there.

I've been keen to Downey for awhile and it was Paramount who gave them their only loss in the regular season. Paramount is young and rising and I see them as a threat to CDM in D4.

SK, yes I would give the nod to the Sunset...last year, Los Al and Edison were better than Downey and Paramont...imo.
FV and HB I think were better than Gahr and Warren...
It is close and we are just having fun....but Overall play is better in the Sunset from what I have seen, with Marina out, the gap widens a bit.... I think HB has upside, I am not sure about FV or NH, but expect some positive movement. The coaches I know at NH are gone, so not hearing much about them. FV I hear mixed reviews, but no threat to the top 3.

@Fan, not sure I am with your assessment, both MAXPREPS and CALPREPS have DOWNEY ranked higher than Edison and Los Alamitos. In fact Paramount is ranked over Los Alamitos.

Sk -the strength of league points for the sunset is 59 and trinity is 69 on the division spread sheet that the cifss released. I was just basing it off that.

ya a bunch of number crunchers no doubt and ya all on paper for the most part... I always think as well when comparing leagues are you using a formula of ALL teams strength combined or what would it look like if it was an ALL-STAR team made up from that league?

I think it should be the average rankings of all the teams in the league. Just an all’s star team does not factor in the bottom half teams usually. The tougher leagues in my opinion are the leagues that are strong from the bottom up not just the top few teams carrying a league.

Is anyone familiar with the new coaching staff at Newport Harbor. Other than the HC.

@Dave, not too many were familiar with Peter Lofthouse when NH made this hire. He was a JUCO Coach at Mesa College in San Diego. He is also a teacher there and will keep that job in the morning and be at NH in the afternoon. He resides in Lake Forest. This seems like a huge stretch for any coach. As for his staff some old time Brinkley guys may or may not still be there. I have not heard how that played out. Lofthouse is working on his teacher credentials and I am sure NH is looking for a spot to put him in the near future so to be at campus full time.

This choice went along the lines that "new blood" was needed as NH did not promote from within. Also of note Coach Lofthouse will be going it without star player QB Sam Barela who hung up his cleats and will strictly play basketball in his senior year.
