SWLGenie - Yes, we have taught Josiah, football is a team sport, but the qb and coach still carry the wins and losses. We have explained if you want to be great you must embrace this.
That loss to Murrieta was crazy man. SM had 736 yards of offense and 56 points and we still lost. We had about 20 penalties, couldn’t get a stop yet still had a chance to win.
Pass: 22-28, 266 yds 1 TD, 1 INT
Rush: 11, 128 yards, 1 TD
But it wasn’t enough.
He had a record breaking year and made the players around him better. We were blessed to be apart of the legacy Coach Fish is building. Can’t wait to see how they grow this year.
Don’t sleep on Coach Fish and SM. He runs a college program in High School and is a great mentor for young student athletes.
Last year, SM lost Calcaterra to graduation, the McClain Brothers, Funa and some other top guys to transfer before last season, only had 1 incoming significant transfer, and was slated to finish last.
What did SM do with Norwood under center?
1) Put a scare on Mission Viejo losing by 4, 2) Scored the most points on Mater Dei all year in only 3 quarters (howbeit losing 70-35), 3) Came two points from beating Bosco and securing 2nd place (finishing 3rd for the first time in years and in a very competitive Trinity) breaking numerous team records.
Just imagine if the transfers had stayed?
This year, got a new up and coming qb, a stud rb coming back and transfers coming.
Should be interesting.
Did your son get any love from the colleges yet? Would like to keep track of him!
Josiah turned down 4 D1 offers (1 FBS, 3 FCS) to take a preferred walk on QB spot close to home (UCLA.)
It’s a bold move, but extremely proud of his grit and resolve to make his dreams happen.
Thanks so much for asking.
Another difference between Carson's SM team of 1997, and say, MD circa 2017, is that SM's #2 QB was named first team all league. (CP was POY.). Orlando passed for over 1,000 yards without a pick as a back-up. Carson played in only two 4th quarters all year and was out at halftime in, ready, 10 games. He was not in a game, let alone racking up stats, when his team was up by 35 on a grossly overmatched opponent in the second half because the coaches had enough class to get him out EARLY and let all the backups play, and play a lot. The story the coaches like Tim O'Hara liked to tell was a goal each week to be prepared enough and execute well enough to allow the fourth team QB to get meaningful reps and not just victory formation kneel downs.
People also may not even know that Palmer averaged something like 10 points and 8 boards for an Eagle CIF championship basketball team in 1997-98.
He was truly a special high school athlete, an elite award winner, a polite and respectful ambassador of the game for over 20 years and has my vote as OC's best HS quarterback.
