soccer becoming more popular than FB on HS campuses

Postby cruiser » Sun Aug 19, 2018 3:47 pm

LA times article states soccer is becoming more popular than football especially in the CIF
city section, there was a deduction of over 25,000 kids in the USA that played HSFB last year
as soccer is slowly beginning to overtake American Football in the future, interesting, no?

When interviewed, soccer kids say football is boring! Apparently constant action in soccer,
except for injury?

It's driven by culture and the demographics in LA favor the sport of soccer, also international cities like LA are more internationally inclined. There is also "bad" PR on football safety that has taken it's toll, I also see the the issue we speak of here of building uber schools will cause many schools to shift away from football. Its no longer a "hey lets suit up with our buddies in the neighborhood and take on the guys next door". Far too many schools now have depleted almost meaningless programs and who wants to get their head knocked in for that....

It will be interesting to see how HS football plays out. I would not be surprised, given the amount of brain injury evidence, if in the not too distant future, an OC school is forced to drop football altogether. Perhaps the diocese will decide they are no longer willing to accept the liability or a local school district comes to the same conclusion. It will happen, just a matter of time.

As many kids as play youth soccer compared to Pop Warner, I'm surprised soccer isn't even more popular.

Repeated headers cause brain injuries, too. Just not very often somebody gets a concussion from one.

I was a juror on a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) case a few years back. The "expert" that testified that every time time a soccer player head butts a ball he sustains a mild to minimal TBI. For what it's worth.

Wasn't there an article recently that compared the increase in Lacrosse participants with the decrease in football? I may have read that in a post here. I know in my area lacrosse is the sport of choice over soccer.

If LA city still supported FB, it would still be number 1. Given LAUSD's demographics this is not shocking news.

My primary care physician is both an internist and a pediatrician. He says he sees a lot more concussions from soccer than he does from football.

Someone has an agenda, in my opinion

That being said top 4 sports for HS concussion rates in order
1. Girls soccer
2. Girls BB
3. Girls VB
4. Boys football

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/rec ... a22f950686

That being said soccer will not grow as it is limited to how many can play and be carried on a team (maybe 20ish).

Football has more opportunity to actually play being you have your starters, reserves, special teams and specialists and likely can have 30+ kids actually play in a given game compared to soccer likely no more than 15 actually play.

Note the article showed a 100 trying out for very few spots.

This is why track is the ultimate for HS participation, everyone is a starter and can compete. The goal in most instances is a personal best and in that there is always a level of success.

Track and field is also the equalizer as there is no luck related such as bouncing lucky fumble, lucky catch or shot, blown call etc. etc. etc. It all comes down to performance.

Note many football players think they are fast until they come on the track and then politely quit when they realize that 11.5 is a FS time and most skills cannot do that even

This is not a CTE issue, this is a culture issue. Any CTE study on FB at any level, unless done the last couple years is just not valid in terms risk playing the game today.

Yay track! And Cross Country. Yes, performance is up to each individual, but the athletes never forget they're part of a team.

I like soccer but I could never imagine "Friday Night Lights" being about soccer, at least not for some time. It just isn't the "event" that football is.

Good point! With the improving design of equipment that provides considerably more protection as time goes by, the heightened awareness and protocols that exist everywhere now (which were essentially non existent before), and the dramatic changing of the rules that further support a much safer playing environment, and those studies that repeatedly show no risk should be taken in context.

Unsurprisingly though, recent studies continue to show no differentiated let alone statistically significant risk these past few years. Just wish people looked at it intelligently and empirically in an unbiased way rather than emotionally through the jaundiced lens of the highly slanted media.
