O.C. #1 Servite defeats #2 Villa Park in season opener

https://www.ocregister.com/2018/11/29/s ... illa-park/

Public schools still dominate the CIF-SS rankings. Matches are pretty exciting--surprised it isn't a bigger deal in the Trinity League. The Friars take on Northview Thursday night.

St. John Bosco #1, Servite #4 in 2018-2019 CIF-SS Preseason Poll

Love wrestling! I've encouraged my linemen for years to wrestle as I love what it does for them and the improvements I see in footwork and one on one tenacity.

It does seem to be the one sport that the Trinity schools outside Bosco and Servite just haven't bothered to invest in.

Servite wrestling has one of the best coaches in CIF and nationally for that matter and the program reflects it.
Other schools outside of Bosco have too many clubs, 7 on 7, or special trainers who poach and discourage multisports.
Though Bosco and Servite also fight the same the coaches their overcome them and recruit in wrestling. MD wrestling has a great coach but hard to get the kids to buy in. Wrestling is hard and maybe the most demanding physically of all sports. And this is coming from a track coach.

Track has suffered a bit but the coaches at the top Trinity schools for track have found a medium to thwart but it is not easy. Trinity track teams always at the top for both boys and girls.

Ya, have always wondered why FB coaches have not pushed their players to try wrestling,
especially the linemen, LB's - it's great physical conditioning, plus you gain coordination,
balance, flexibility - besides hitting the weights, etc

The son of my estranged friend RPW, was a DB who joined the wrestling team, and what has always stood out to me about him was that if he got a hand on you, you were not getting away. He wasn't a very big DB, but even if he didn't bring you down right away, he held on to you until teammates could finish the job. I believe wrestling had something to do with that.

It would be nice to see Clinton put as much time/effort into creating a great basketball program.

Huge upset tonight as Servite wrestling rated #16 in California, Defeated SJ Bosco rated #3 in California. The match came down to the final event won by Ayden Matheney who pinned his opponent in the HWT class. The final score was 41-32 for the Fighting Friars who are the 2019 Trinity League Champions with a 4-0 record.

Congrats to Servite, BUT Bosco was wrestling without 3 of their top wrestlers and another who has the flu. CIF will be a whole different match if three of them make it back. One of them is done for the year.

Professor, you beat me to the punch. I "braved" the rainy night and attended the match at St. John Bosco. Two great programs and with the Trinity League on the line you couldn't ask for a better back-and-forth competition. Servite took an early lead in the lower weight classes; Bosco clawed back in the middle and heavier weights, until it came down to the 285 lb. big boys, with Servite holding on to a slim 35-32 lead. The Friars' Matheney went out to quick lead and eventually pinned his man to clinch the match and the TL championship.

Yeah, and when Servite met Bosco in football this year we were missing 3 of our top players.....but they were still on the field that night.

Congrats to Servite. An impressive win over a great program! In an era where duals are being de-emphasized in many sports, I love to see these kinds of matches.

Like that’s something to compare? Bosco’s injuries were major and they might not be back by CIF. It’s a whole different ball game when they are three CIF champ caliber kids. God knows the football players for servite we’re anything but CIF champ caliber.

You clearly didn't understand my jab, but I bet the Professor does....

In any case, great dual match between the class of Southern California wrestling. Bosco has a strong team and I wish them the best in CIF and State.

Funny, but those three are genuinely good kids; they just drank the Negro Kool-Aid. Weren't the first, and won't be the last.

If I understand your question, Servite forfeited at 108. Servite's Andrew Silva won the first contested match at 115.

Often the matches don't start at 106 and I was curious what weight class it began at (it make it more interesting for me when looking at the score to see how the final matches likely played out).
