I believe Los Al won the championship in 2020(1), 3rd in 2019, tied for 1st in 2018, won in 2017, and 2nd in 2016. So that hardly seems like forever. The worst year that they had was 2019 and that was the year they lost a lot of players and coaches to Servite, started about 5 freshmen, and were still able to go toe to toe with Lawndale in the first round. The only time they got blown out was by the CDM team that was legit. Coach Fenton teams play hard. His teams at Fountain Valley and Cypress played hard. Now Los Al has some talent and we'll have to see how it works out.

Please keep in mind that with the new divisional selection process in place, if Los Alamitos wins convincingly against a beefed up schedule, they could well end up in Division 1 for the playoffs. That might pose an overwhelming challenge to winning a CIF section title, let alone a state bowl game.

That’s true, they did win outright in ‘17. I should have said it didn’t feel like they’d won a Sunset title since 2014 - when they went 9-1 in the regular season with their only loss prior to the playoffs coming by 4 points to LA City champ Narbonne, on the road. I honestly overlooked Los Al going 5-0 in Sunset play in 2017 - in arguably the worst Sunset League in recent memory. In non league that year, they went 2-4, with blowout losses to Poly, JSerra and Norco. In league, they destroyed Fountain Valley, HB, Harbor, and Marina (in their last year in the league before relegation in favor of CdM), who were all one-legged dogs that year. And they squeaked out a win over a mediocre Edison team.

I also remembered CIF-finalist CdM as the far and away best team in the Sunset in 2018, and don’t feel the lightning cancelled “7-7 tie” they agreed to with Los Al would have ended in anything but a CdM win. But, technically, it was a tie and technically they did share the league. Even though that CdM team won 11 games with Ethan Garbers, John Humphreys and Mark Redman and, as you mentioned, beat Los Al 48-14 the next season.

But yes, 2017 was a league championship year for Los Al in a really down Sunset Lg, and 2018 was technically a split title with CdM; that’s my fault for the lack of recognition.

Edit: To be clear, I’m not firing any shots at Ray Fenton’s coaching style or the way his teams play. He should get credit for bringing Malachi to campus in the first place. He’s also made some good hires this summer, taking advantage of newfound interest in his program from coaches who would not have been interested without the current talent level there.

Even he would admit that he would not have the team and coaching staff he has now put together, or have a shot at competing for a CIF title, or be back to playing at a big boy football level for the next couple of seasons - without the talent magnet and shining star that is Malachi Nelson.

Los Al plays Bakersfield first in Week 0, and Lincoln in Week 1 is also a skill-heavy team that isn’t exactly known for its play in the trenches. But, on the topic of transfers, the Hornets will have some new heat this season with their latest acquisitions, incl. senior 6-4 Phoenix AZ transfer QB Jalen Daniels, and other additions for “The Hive” from around “America’s Finest City.” Will be the most even matchup for Los Al during the regular season on the perimeter; the Griffins are not going to simply line up and wow Lincoln with better athletes.

If at all, the trenches might be an issue for Los Al against Trinity Lg SM with Hero Kanu and company. But even then, this isn’t 2011 SM with Johnny Stanton basically running the single wing behind D1 behemoths on offense. And you’d also have to ask who from SM is going to cover any of Los Al’s wideouts. Trenches won’t matter much on defense if your corners are getting run by all night.

The flip side to that is, does Los Al have a defense that is anywhere as talented as their offense?

If not, they will run through their schedule and face a first round knockout in Division 1.

Could they slow down/outscore CC, MV, or Poly?

RedPillWonderland wrote: Tue Jun 22, 2021 4:32 pm For the record, there are a TON of transfers every single year in Texas HS football for 100% athletic reasons. The most famous HS transfer of all time might be Kyler Murray, a 5 star recruit, Heisman Trophy winner, and #1 overall NFL draft pick (and top 10 MLB pick), who transferred from Lewisville HS to Allen HS (both in the Dallas metroplex) after his 9th grade year at the direction of his father Kevin (a former Texas A&M QB and a QB trainer in the area). His entire family moved across town into suburban oasis Allen and its independent school district, to be a part of its well established powerhouse HS football program and play in its brand new $60M stadium in front of 18K fans every Friday night.

Kyler started 43 straight games at Allen and won them all, becoming arguably the best Texas HSFB player of all time. In that period, he played with numerous fellow transfers brought into the district by Allen HS to stack their roster.

10 Gallon Hat Texas Guy (and Sondy) will try to tell you that Texas HSFB is “real” high school ball because “they only play with kids from the district” - that is complete BS. Take a look at the best programs across Texas and many are bringing in families from outside the school district strictly to play at football powerhouses. Been happening for decades. At least we’re honest about it in California.
To reinforce my point about how preposterous it is for Eric Sondheimer and others to say that transfers for athletic reasons are not allowed in Texas like they are in California, former athletic transfer Kyler Murray’s alma mater Allen High School (near Dallas) just accepted another major transfer from the #1 ranked junior football player in Texas, defensive end DJ Hicks from Katy (TX) Morton Ranch (near Houston). I’m sure his family picked Allen for the agriculture magnet program and not the $60M football stadium. Carry on ...

Not even criticizing the strategy but I honestly don’t see how they can keep all these kids on the roster, even through the end of camp. From the DB group, by my count they’ve only lost a couple of 4th/5th teamers this offseason to transfer out while adding RJ Jones, Frausto-Ramos and then triple dipping with Hunter Nowell right before camp.

It’s gluttony at this point. I’ve mentioned before that almost every backup has D1 offers, many of them from P5 schools. If you’re a kid who has that kind of ability, why would you allow yourself to be 4th string at Bosco even if they win every game by 3 touchdowns and win the national championship?

If they can convince all these kids to stay for the whole season, Jason Negro should win General Manager of the Year regardless of the game results 😂

Former Eastvale Roosevelt HS Offensive Lineman Damian Cabada (6’1 305) is now at Santa Margarita. Senior transfer, guard and center.

Unclear why he left ER for the Trinity Lg; will certainly help the Eagles in the trenches. Unfortunately has not received his Texas offer yet but looks good in uniform.

I like Jaime Ortiz but this is an ironic “all a part of the process at #onetownoneteam” message given 2 of these 3 QBs transferred to San Clemente HS, one from a school in Long Beach and the other after attending Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita first.

Another Texas HSFB MAJOR transfer, this one from out of state:

The top team in Texas and the #4 team in the nation, back to back defending state champion Westlake HS in Austin, just acquired one of the best offensive linemen in the country and one of the best junior recruits in the state of Florida.

4-star TJ Shanahan of Timber Creek HS in Orlando, a 6-4 300 lb OL, has 37 scholarship offers before even playing a game in his junior season - including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio St, Oklahoma, Texas, TAMU, Stanford, Oregon, Penn St, and many many many others.

I’m sure it’s a huge coincidence that this super prospect decided to transfer to the best team in Texas right before the start of the season. He’s got a Stanford offer so it’s probably related to Westlake’s STEM program. Let’s Ride!

Just giving you some ammo for the next time Walker Texas Ranger or San Antonio Bill tries to brag about how Texas doesn’t have private school “factories” and does it with the “neighborhood kids from the district”; remind them about TJ Shanahan, DJ Hicks and Kyler Murray getting shipped into the district among hundreds of other football transfers annually statewide.

If you think California HSFB has a lot of transfers, wait till you get a load of this …

Longtime Florida HS recruiting media guy Larry Blustein annually tracks football transfers in South Florida, Dade and Broward counties in particular.

This offseason he says there have been 244 HS football player transfers in those two counties alone - and counting (list link here):

Of that group, Bosco’s opponent next week, 2-time defending Florida 6A champion Miami Central, #3 in Florida and #15 nationally, has received 15 junior and senior transfers since the fall season ended with their most recent championship. FIFTEEN! Here is the list, including their former schools and any college commitments:

2022 – Alfonzo Allen, DB, Miami Central (Hollywood McArthur (2019), Hallandale (2020)) - Arizona St commit

2022 – Jaylin Marshall, DB, Miami Central (Hollywood Chaminade Madonna (2019), Hallandale (2020)) - Georgia Tech commit

2022 – Edric Weldon, S, Miami Central (Hallandale) - 31 offers

2022 – Kheylan Martin-Brown, LB, Miami Central (Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, Hallandale)

2022 – Dylan Reid, LB, Miami Central (Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna, Hallandale)

2022 – Kymani Williams, DE, Miami Central (Hallandale, Miami Northwestern)

2022 – Anthony Rose, DB, Miami Central (Riviera Beach Inlet Grove (2019), Miami Carol City (2020)) - South Carolina commit

2022 - Malcolm Davis, WR/DB, Miami Central (Miami Carol City)

2022 – Raashaun Rainey, DB, Miami Central (Miami Carol City)

2022 – Daughtry Richardson, OL, Miami Central (Tallahassee Godby (2019), Miami Edison (2020)) - Florida State Commit

2022 – Keyondre Young, LB, Miami Central (Plantation)

2023 – Jonathan “Jon” Harris, RB, Miami Central (Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna)

2023 – Christian Lowery, S, Miami Central (Miami St. Brendan)

2023 – Zayden Laing-Taylor, DB, Miami Central (Miami Monsignor Pace)

2023 – Ean Pope, RB, Miami Central (Miami Monsignor Pace)

As you can see, many of these kids are on their third school, and for whatever reason nearby schools Chaminade Madonna, Carol City and especially Hallendale HS are functioning as weigh stations/pit stops for future Central Rockets players. Some transferred to multiple schools just this offseason alone, and many are now Central’s best players, almost the entire defense. Several are committed to Power 5 programs or have received dozens of major offers.

Central only has the 3rd most transfers of the nationally ranked teams in Florida. IMG is #1 in the state and #2 in Maxpreps national rankings and we know their transfer situation (nearly every player on the roster is a transfer). Ft Lauderdale St Thomas Aquinas is #5 in the nation and #2 in the state and has 19(!) transfers this offseason, and #17/#4 Plantation American Heritage has 10 new acquisitions since January.

Sondheimer would have a stroke if this was Mater Dei, Bosco or Sierra Canyon. I cast no aspersions on the transfer portal at the HS or college levels, nor the kids/families involved in it in any state. I just like to have transparency about the fact that California is not uniquely involved in this player trade. As Blustein points out, although COVID ratcheted up the rate this past year, transfers have been going on forever and will continue on. South Florida makes Southern California look minor League in this area.

The final tally on the Playa Del Rey St Bernard transfer diaspora:

20 transfers to 8 different schools. This is just those known through either public announcements, updated team rosters, or the CIFSS website (which is still evaluating a sit out requirement for many of these kids).

Would have to think they’ll be allowed to play immediately given the scandal St Bernard is going through and the fact they’ve shut down their football program, but we’ll see. That may not matter as much for the 12 sophomores (Class of 2024) who were brought in as freshmen last summer by Manny Douglas and crew in his doomed attempt at bringing the Narbonne formula to SBHS and building a microwaveable new private school powerhouse.

A little pre-kickoff transfer portal cleanup …

Another defection from the overflowing Bosco Braves defensive back group:

Former Braves backup DB and junior Rayjohn White (6-0 170) left Bellflower to seek a better opportunity to play at Bishop Amat. Coincided with the arrival of DBs from Alemany and JSerra. White joins former Bosco teammate and current Amat junior Delano Franklin, who transferred prior to the spring season and ended up playing both WR/KR and some DB for the Lancers in the spring. Amat also added 6-4 junior QB Hunter Watson from Sierra Canyon this week after he lost a QB competition to senior Daniel Duran at Sierra. Those are only a couple of Amat’s additions this offseason. Coach Matt V working his connections for Coach Hagerty over at Amat already.

Unconfirmed transfer (departure) rumors on two other sophomore (Class of 2024) Bosco defensive backs.

Playing dominos over there on Bellflower Blvd this summer …
