Mater Dei sailing team

Post by cruiser »

..just happen to hear that MD has a sailing team and they are not bad, it's the only Trinity school
that has one, It's a pretty elite sport, pretty much have to be a coastal area school or kids that
live near the water (MD has a few) to field team(s) - other then schools along the coast
that have them,(CDM/Newport Harbor and MD have teams in the OC; there are very few schools
that field a team, I would think it's a very pricey sport.

My bad, daddyooo; but I'm thinking they don't have teams that sail competitively in
sponsored regattas throughout SoCal. I don't see them placing or even in any of the
regular season regattas, maybe they just do it on a club/rec type basis, fyi

I was just noting the schools that sail competitively, MD has placed high in several of them.
even won a couple of them, fyi

Is MD’s sailing team full of transfers and do they also have a strength training savant that sets the culture of the whole sailing program?

Who knows, but apparently they have a very good sailing coach in Aubrey Mayer, the "Bahia Corinthian
Yacht club (Newport Beach) junior sailing director" - has very good credentials and apparently kids from other
yacht clubs are moving over to train with him. (was a 2005 USA sailing team member)

Maybe it's a new way to get kids into USC now that the rowing connection is shut down.

Hey, it's probably a good sport if you're into it. Probably more colleges have sailing teams than do high schools.

Don't get me started on sailing and MD coaches at Newport Yacht Clubs....

Sailing recently got the waters muddied in the national bribing scandal... is there anything honest left anymore!

But if you have the grades and you're on your school's sailing team, I bet you could just about pick your college. Maybe AD's should be looking into some of the more "obscure" sports. Fencing, anyone?

Yes - and at the older east coast schools, I believe you can get fencing scholarships!

I'd send my kid to school for Lightsaber Dueling now that it's an official sport...

Hey, probably no danger of head injuries. Well, unless your opponent cuts it off. Any schools have samurai teams?

^^ Badminton replaced football after my senior season. Might have been one of the most fun classes I ever had.

The OC Badminton Club has a big facility around Katella and Main in Orange. Seems like somebody said our Olympic team trains there. Serious sport.
