JSerra vs. East (SLC)

Post by daddyooo » Sat Aug 24, 2019 12:38 pm

watched via a cell phone live stream and saw the hightlights later on Hudl. Observations:

1) JSerra offense needs work. It will come-but do they have any wideouts? Street only broke one run, otherwise throttled all night as JSerra had problems throwing the ball down the field.
2) JSerra defense was magnificent against an option team with some real speed. 6 turnovers-one of the turnovers was when a JSerra DB ran down a breakaway East runner over 70 yards and caused a fumble out of the endzone.
3) 14 points off special teams.

Need more offensive production to compete with the big boys.

Yah not real impressed with JS in that contest...honestly SM looked better against REV...offensively.

The run down was a hellofa play tho...hard to gage East as Hudl footage was terrible...

Utah Sports Action on YouTube has good highlight feed also.

East is likely to go a long way in major division playoffs in that state. Probably better opponent than REV.

Yah After better look there D was stout, quick, they were physical with good over all team speed, Hudl film was so far away, bad for comps. That full back 6 is a beast and 3 and 5 obviously could book it, they’re physical, East. So good road win for JS, those games make you better. I noticed those guys went both ways as well

Also have to agree East a level above REV...

I was at the game and agree with the commenters. East is a solid team, a couple of fast backs.

Thoughts:
1)East game planned well, the primary ball carriers on Friday night weren't the primary ball carriers in the game East played a week prior. East had the advantage of already playing a game.
2)Very impressed with East. A very big and physical team. It was a tough environment, 90+ degrees at elevation at game time. No passing game at all though.
3)JSerra was good on defense, although the turnovers really helped them. East's run focused game plan really played into JSerra's strengths. East could not pass the ball at all, so the defensive backs for JSerra were not tested in the passing game at all. JSerra's linebackers were fast and active. Sialafue was a force on defensive line.
4)JSerra had Genova, McDaniel and Green all leave with injuries-- a big thing to watch next week.
5)JSerra really struggled in the passing game and East game planned for that. The running game struggled because they loaded the box and forced JSerra to throw the ball, and they really struggled. Just seemed out of synch the entire game.
6)JSerra really needs to clean it up for the team from New Jersey.

1) Who was the JSerra DB that chased down the East player from 70 yards out? Zamajay Duncan? Sammy Green? Can’t imagine any other JSerra defenders with that kind of catch up speed. Sounds like the hustle play of the week.

2) Did the Carson transfer New Zealand Williams play any defense or just offense? Best name in HS football — other than General Booty.

3) How did the other newcomers for the Lions look? Champion Johnson (another great name)? Morrison at TE? The Moe Brothers? The new OLs?

Sounds like the running game struggled (which is their bread and butter) so I imagine there’s still a lot of work to do for Harlow and Rescigno to mesh the new guys Crane, Maseuli Murphy with with Persi.

St Joe’s Regional is the #1 team in New Jersey, the defending state champs and plays in the best league in the state, with rivals Bergen Catholic (who they beat in the state title game), Don Bosco Prep, Paramus Catholic and St Peters Prep.

Their 6-5 QB Matt Alaimo is committed to Purdue, 4-star junior RB Audric Estime is 6-2 215 and the OL is led by senior Luke Wypler (Ohio State) and junior 4-star Geno VanDemark (6-4 313). Also have Penn State commit Amin Vanover on the DL and 2 Rutgers commits at DB.

This should be a good matchup; hopefully JSerra is healthy.

New Jersey seemingly sending SJR (v JSerra at SD Cathedral Catholic Honor Bowl) and Don Bosco (at St John Bosco) out to SoCal in the same week to seek revenge for the 62-14 bloodbath inflicted upon Bergen Catholic by Mater Dei in 2017. Maybe they are sharing a charter flight to John Wayne and splitting the distance difference?

It’s always 2 million degrees for the day games on the Cathedral Catholic turf at the Honor Bowl; so maybe that will give JSerra an advantage. Or at least the team with the most depth. If JSerra does have guys out, that could be a bad afternoon.

The out of state teams always seem to struggle down there with the heat; Washington state champ Eastside Catholic suffered its only loss last season at the Honor Bowl to Oaks Christian, which was barely a top 5 team in the CIFSS.

No but I did stand on that turf for an Honor Bowl day game a couple years ago and thought I was standing on the surface of the sun. More cramps in that game than a city marathon.

Ross Maseuli is out for the season, correct? Huge blow to that very good o-line.

Yes, Maseuli is out for year

1) Who was the JSerra DB that chased down the East player from 70 yards out? Zamajay Duncan? Sammy Green? Can’t imagine any other JSerra defenders with that kind of catch up speed. Sounds like the hustle play of the week.

DB who chased him down was junior Jayden Minix. He came in two years ago as a young and undersized freshman. He hit a growth spurt since last season. He has elite speed.

2) Did the Carson transfer New Zealand Williams play any defense or just offense? Best name in HS football — other than General Booty.

Williams played both, had 12 tackles and a pick on D.

3) How did the other newcomers for the Lions look? Champion Johnson (another great name)? Morrison at TE? The Moe Brothers? The new OLs?

The passing game struggled, Morrison caught one pass on one or two targets. Johnson had a nice long gainer on a crossing pattern early, but nothing after that. He didn’t start on defense. The Moe brothers all started and played well. The O line was pretty inconsistent, they really need to get more time together. They protected Booty well but struggled to make holes for the RB’s due to SLC loading the box and the passing game not clicking.

Sucks for Ross Maseuli. Great kid and a mauler. Should have stayed in SD.

I heard his previous school blocked the move due to disciplinary issue?

In regard to Maseuli, that is the rumor. Feel bad for the kid. He is a mauler.

I see Drew Dierckman on the DL. next to W. Moe and Suliafu; also have seen Mariboho played some 5 tech DE; what was the starting group? Looks like the LBs were Netherton, Te’o, U. Moe and Genova, with Trey Williams rotating in. A little surprised Champ Johnson not in that group. Treyce Warren and NZ Williams at safety and Green/Minix/Duncan at corner/nickel.

What was Genova’s injury? They’ll need those guys and E McDaniel this week.

It's not a rumor he put a severe beating on a fellow student and was blocked by his previous school from playing this year.

Looks like it was:

LT Persi
LG Fleiss
C Crane
RG F. Moe
RT Murphy

That’s a formidable group once they mesh, even without Maseuli (who is a 2021 kid). Especially with Street and Green running behind them, Morrison Johnson and Mariboho at TE, and Netherton as a goalline/short yardage FB/HB.

was his previous school going to suspend him had he stayed?
