redpill thanks for all the info on the traveling teams. I think this is such a great experience for the kids to see another part of the country. Looks like some great games this weekend! I'll be at the MD game. Look for me, the guy in the red MD shirt!

GC is fired up to play the Braves

Can they make it to the 2nd quarter?

#1-0

Postgame update: Good Counsel is 0-1 this week.

Quick recap of the first Q so far:

Bosco shockingly goes 3 and out to start the game. Shanks a punt to about the 40, GC takes over.

GC unable to gain more than a few yards on the ground. Turnover on downs.

Bosco moves the ball to midfield, DJ picks 3rd down conversion on 18 yard run. He has been RUNNING the pill this year, FREQUENTLY. Braves turn ball over on downs when McDuffie flat drops a ball on the money.

GC unable again to move the ball. Basically a thrown punt on 3rd down ends up intercepted by Jake Newman.

DJ long connection down the sidelines with Collins. Then a seam route rocket to McDuffie, he catches this one (almost in self defense). 18 yard TD pass, 7-0 Bosco. 3m remaining 1Q.

Sack by Carson transfer Jairus Satele on 1st down for GC. A couple of unsuccessful runs. GC punts to Loya (with the punter this time). A bomb of a punt, caught by Loya at about the 25, loses yards on the return. Ack to the 19.

Bosco ball, 1:23 left 1Q.

Nate Sandbeast Jones with a 20+ yard run, looking like his old self. Called back due to hold by former JSerra transfer Logan Bednar, who is back healthy. Moves ball back inside the 20, but DJ connects with Collins on a tunnel screen for 30 yard catch and run into GC territory. End of 1st; GC made it to 2Q and it’s only 7-0 Bosco. That’s a win for them.

GC actually is just as big as Bosco at nearly every spot, and has team speed. Bosco just making better calls offensively and DJ and the WRs have made plays.

DJ hits Hutson on a beautifully designed crossing route for a 25 yard catch and run. Hutson has been very productive on that route this season for Bosco (and very unproductive in picking up penalties, like the unsportsmanlike he drew for talking s**t after the first TD).

Braves run the ball down to the 2, then throw a quick fade to Loya, beatuiful contested catch; TD Braves. Loya also kicks the extra point. 14-0 Braves. According to someone next to me, that’s (unbelievably) Loya’s first TD of the season. He’s done everything but that for Bosco to this point.

Bosco again makes GC go 3 and out. Falcons have zero passing game and can’t imagine they’ll score running dive and power all night at the teeth of the SJB defense.

Then some Bosco kid damn near tackles GC’s punter and gives them a free first down. Bosco coaches don’t even look upset lol.

New QB in for GC, #14. GC #5 takes ball around left end for 12 yards, maybe the first first down for GC all game.

3rd down pass is incomplete; flag on the play — PI on Josh Alford. 1st down at about the 20, 6:30 left 1st half. 3 more unsuccessful plays and a FG attempt; shanked.

First down Bosco, 5:41 left 1H.

Flat out drop by Hutson; this Bosco WR corps might lead the nation in both explosive catches and stone drops.

DJ does his typical Roethlisberger impression to avoid a sack after Michigan commit Kris Jenkins Jr races by Drake Metcalf like he was standing still on the pass rush. Back shoulder rocket by DJ incomplete to Loya. 3 and out.

Another UGLY punt by Bosco. This might be a weakness that comes back to haunt them later in the season.

GC ball around midfield. 5m left. RB Wilkerson running HARD for GC. Moves ball inside 30 on a couple runs. Two hard tackles by Gaoteote who looks like he could be in college right now from field level. Satele and Pepe are also extremely disruptive in the middle of this defense.

Braves force GC to pass on 3d again, which is of course incomplete (backup QB 14 still in). GC goes for it on 4 and 3, turnover on downs on dive play that is unsuccessful. SJB Ball 3m left.

You can’t beat Bosco with no passing threat AT ALL.

Braves work their way to about the 40, where DJ gets GC to jump offsides for a first down. Then a screen to Loya for 15, and a screen to Hutson for 15 before he is WALLOPED while carrying the ball like a loaf of bread in the middle of the field. Lucky to not fumble there. Hutson does some REALLY undisciplined stuff.

Braves OL called for holding twice in 3 plays, which, with the way some of these Bosco OL kids struggle to move their feet, could be called nearly every play. Ed Riley being an exception, that kid is their best (and smallest) lineman.

3rd and 31 with 53 sec left. DJ fires pass on square route to Collins, who — DROPS it. Lol that’s at least 4 drops on WIDE OPEN balls in the first half.

Punt rolls to GC 14. 34 seconds left. Dead ball personal foul on GC for scrapping at the line of scrimmage on the punt.

GC runs out the first half, but not before their coach complains about something Bosco did on defense.

Halftime: Bosco 14 Good Counsel 0.

This was kind of an ugly half, lot of penalties, drops, bad special teams. GC not making it easy for Bosco, but they can’t consistently move the ball because they are completely one dimensional, and they don’t have Saquon Barkley at RB so that isn’t gonna work.

If I’m being honest, Bosco looks pretty average, especially for the 3rd ranked team in the nation. Even their fans seem bored.

First time at a game here at Brian Panish Investment Portfolio Stadium here at Bosco. It’s nice, great sound system, palm trees and such, nice field surface, cute student section set up, lots of signs celebrating the success under Negro (couldn’t find any type of banner for the history of the SJB football program from before 2013 lol).

The stadium just doesn’t look like what you’d expect for the cost though. It kind of looks the same as Newport Harbor’s new stadium. Which actually has bathrooms.

For those wondering about the whether the lavatory rumors are true, Panish Stadium, which cost $7.2M in private money, DOES NOT HAVE ANY REAL BATHROOMS. That is not a typo. I guess the plans overlooked that lol.

Nothing but port O pots. From “A&J Portables” LoL. Was told I had to walk to the main school building for a real restroom, and security was not sure those bathrooms would even be open.

The announcer, who has to be from Queens or Brooklyn, sounds like he has bronchitis and keeps coughing in the mic. Adds to the vibe lol

Falcons get the ball to start the second half. Jr QB #6 Campbell back in. Runs left on zone read keeper for a first down. Then to RB Wilkerson for 10 more. Campbell keeper out to midfield. Gaotete makes about his 100th tackle in 4 games.

GC goes off tackle left, tackled by Nate Burrell who has really played well this year as a first year starter. 3rd and 5, tackled by Danny Lockhart on a nice play. GC goes for it on 4th down AGAIN. Another incomplete pass intended for their best WR Miles Cross. (At this point a GC parent standing next to me yelled “that’s why you punt the ball! What are we doing?!”)

This is maybe the most boring game I’ve seen all year. GC on that struggle bus. Probably have less than 5 first downs. Feel bad for their defense.

Braves get ball around midfield; DJ pass on a crossing route to a WIDE OPEN Beaux Collins, runs down to the 20 or so. Nate Jones bangs through the GC defense, inside the 10. Braves go hurry up, Jones bangs in for 6. Braves get early stop and quick score. GC looking defeated.

21-0 Bosco; 8:40 to play 3Q.

GC works ball out to 41 on a couple of pounding runs and an actual compete pass. Gaoteote smacks #13 upon making the catch - kid is a VERY good LB.

GC left tackle Landon Tengwall (2021) looks like he could be a COLLEGE junior right now. Specimen. Firearms like Tarzan.

Tackle for loss by Matt Jordan and D Lockhart. GC pistol offense leaves a lot of u blocked defenders. 3rd and 13, Braves bring the heat (Chris King has blitzed a TON this game). Soph LB Jalen Woods (heir apparent to Kourt Williams) leads about 5 kids in sacking GC.

Loya nearly fumbles the return of another great GC punt. Bosco ball at 30 or so, 5m left 3Q.

Servite transfer Jabari Bates (who has been Bosco’s best RB this year) in at RB for Bosco—a couple of lightning quick runs up the middle in this Bosco zone read tempo scheme move ball inside GC 10, mixed in with a few passes to Hutson off play action, and a roll out pass to DJ’s little brother.

Bosco stuffed on 1st and 2’d goal. Quick out to Loya is Fired high and outside. Loya FG attempt from about 27: good.

Bosco 24-0 1:20 left 3Q. Trying not to yawn. The muted lighting in this stadium isn’t helping.

Braves sophomore FS Jaxson Harley in the game. Not sure if Jake Newman is hurt or just rotating out. Harley gets away with PI call downfield on first play of drive.

Then Kourt Williams BLOWS UP GC slot WR on telegraphed screen pass. Williams gets up like its regular; kid is a monster. Ohio State stole another of so cal’s Best.

PI call (questionable) on Bosco; Negro goes nuts. End of 3Q; Bosco up 24-0.

First down GC; Campbell throws to WIDE OPEN running back down the middle seam, drops it. Could have been GC’s biggest play of the night. Lockhart beaten badly. An illegal hands to face penalty on Kobe Pepe. GC say Bosco 29, deepest drive of the 2nd half. 2nd time inside 30 all night.

3rd down and 10, Campbell forced to scramble, picks up 9. Bosco is HUNTING this QB on blitzes and this defense again looks very fast. Very physical up front too. Jon Jon Vaughns hits like Ronnie Lott. That kid is a legit D1 safety and apparently a great baseball prospect. Impressed with this defense’s speed and effort, if not its technique and positioning.

GC picks up 4th and 1, moves inside 5. Ugly fade mask moves ball to the 2. Newman back in for Harley, apparently not hurt.

GC POUNDS in off now RIGHT tackle Tengwall, then gets conversion after Campbell rolls out and trucks over Vaughns.

8:20 left: Bosco 24 GC 8

Give the Falcons credit, they have played hard as hell all night. If they could throw the ball, this would be a different game. We’ll see what Bosco is about here; they need to score (a touchdown) and put this one away.

Bosco mixes in a little bit of Speedy Luke with their primary back Jabari Bates; Luke picks up 19 on 3rd down to moves into GC territory. Another Luke carry around the right side nets a bunch, but called back due to another hold by Bosco. Coaches upset but I don’t think they can even argue some of these holds (let’s just say there’s a very large kid doing a lot of grabbing on the right side tonight).

Loya jet sweep for 15 or so with some broken tackles and jukes mixed in; then a few plays later DJ lobs a ball into the endzone for Hutson - jump ball catch for a TD over the defender. 31-8 Bosco 5:18 left

Give Coach Lo credit; he has put his kids in position to make plays tonight for the most part, and that was a well called drive.

Also give DJ and Hutson credit, theyve been tough to stop this year. That combo, plus the rest of the WR group, is going to be a problem for opponents. Lot of weapons for Bosco.

Quick 3 and out after leg injury to Jaxson Harley on the kickoff. IMG transfer Gaoteote has to have 20 tackles for Bosco.

On the punt, probably the 15th Bosco penalty tonight on a block in the back. Wipes out a 20 yard Loya return. Moves it back to the 30 or so. Nate Jones pounds it out to the 50.

2m left.

DJ’s snap claps in this shotgun offense sound like thunder; kid is the literal THUNDERCLAP superhero lol.

A low DJ throw on a quick out caught by Hutson. DJ has been inaccurate on quick out breaking stuff, but pinpoint accurate on in-breaking throws, deep balls and back shoulder fade stop type throws.

Braves take a knee. Bosco wins a sleeper, 31-8.

Never felt like a contest. GC parents and friends here in the visitor stands (like 150 of them) did more complaining to the refs than they did cheering. Bosco fans seemed bored at the end of this one.

Hard to tell how good Bosco is because they have won all 4 games mostly on their talent advantages. That’s unlikely to change between now and Oct 25.

You could have said the same thing last year though, and they ended up beating MD 41-18 in Santa Ana. It’s all just conjecture for now.

On to Oahu.

LATE BREAKING STADIUM BATHROOM UPDATE

For those attending a game at Bosco’s new stadium tomorrow for first time ...

Although Panish Stadium indeed has no bathrooms, at least one can be found (unlocked) in the basketball gym, next to the Bosco home locker room and under the retired Nomar Garciappara jersey lol.

Also, parking is TEN DOLLARS, as are the game programs (I literally laughed out loud at that). $8 for a burrito, or a 3 taco combo. They may also charge for wi fi, I didn’t try to connect.

Bosco clearly trying to recoup some of that $7.2M.

Return to “High School”
