D-3 Football and Orange County

Postby hit the lights » Fri Sep 13, 2019 6:09 am

D-3 football is shaping up to be a pretty tough division. With Grace Brethren demolishing Oaks Christian, and CDM
beating some good teams, La Habra has beat Defending D-2 CHAMP in Upland, while being tested vs some other top programs. Other Orange county teams that will be and are notoriously tough are...
Tesoro
Edison
Los Al
out of county teams like Cajon, Alemany, St. Francis, Lawndale, Cathedral, Westlake, all bring big challenges.
Got to say, California football is pretty damn good!!
your thoughts on D-3 and the rest, D-4 and Villa Park, lock for CIF??

D3 finals should be grace and cdm. Alemany and la habra also pose a threat. Cif polls have it pretty accurate.
Los al is a current dumpster fire. Cathedral is poorly coached and only throws the ball although they have the most talent.
Tesoro is well coached and could sneak in the final 4 on coaching.

Credo-
It looks that way right now. I would like to see a CDM vs LA HABRA game.
Depending on brackets, and this being D-3 now, La Habra should get out of the first round, then face a solid team in week 2.
When it comes to beating the big boys, its been tough for the highlanders. Can they do it this year in D-3?
I cant imagine CDM has a more talented team than Calabasas, which LH had the game with 5 min remaining.
They can do it, but will they??

After seeing Alemany and Miller Moss , with all his receivers dismantle Oaks Christian, I'm thinking they might be the favorite in d3 right now...
I haven't seen Alemany with these types of athletes in a few years...

Yeah, they are up there with Calabasas, athletes, better trench guys and good coaching.
Alemany, that is. PTG- Tesoro has woke up this year, and are well coached.
Grace and CDM bringing it too. Cant leave out Cajon, cathedral, Lawndale.
Other OC teams who cant be over looked, Edison and Los Al. It will not be a cake walk!
Round 2 is when it will get real for the league champs. ALL HYPE STOPS!
So Cal top 20-
Grace @ 6
Alemany @7
CDM @ 10
Tesoro @ 16
La Habra @ 18
Lawndale @ 19

Big game this week as D-3 takes on D-1. SUNSET VS SOUTH COAST
EDISON VS SAN CLEMENTE Will get a good idea how good these teams are.
Edison beat a good SJH team, even though they are in the sea view, they would probably beat some SC teams.
Edison is not a pushover.

"Tesoro had better be ready because this is by far the toughest team they have played so far and is no way a cake walk like the first 4 games. I would not be surprised if they lost this game by not really being prepared for it from their previous 4 games."

Trust me, they know who they're going up against and are practicing accordingly. Tesoro lost last year 7-6 in what IMO was a coaching debacle. Also, the kids all know each other from their hoods (Ladera Ranch) and Pop Warner. It's going to be a good game.

Tony- Great points!, as always. Yes, schedule could hurt you in the long run, when you end up facing a good to great team. They havent been tested. It also works the other way too, when some teams always schedule the big boys
and never beat them or learn anything, except how to lose again. Tesoro usually is coached well or above average in the OC. It is tough to pull kids in south county when MV, JSERRA, and SM are getting those kids.
Then you have all the schools that are so close in prox. The name of the game now is recruiting, maybe Poston should start busing kids in?? JK! You really get to see coaching at its finest when a staff can take good average kids and win vs the destination schools who hand pick out of area kids. Two public schools in D-3 , RESPECT for both of those schools.
I think i will take Edison in this one, you sold me Tony.

T-
Yes, Edison vs SC. Edison was up 21-7 with a few minutes in game and SC makes wild come back.
Wake up call at halftime by Ortiz.

Jserra handles Calabasas easy with running booty. Kid can do it all! It was 31-14 with 3 min. remaining.

Los Al first win 27-0 vs Carson

Tesoro- handles SJH 20-3

MV- destroys st. marys 63-14, next up Upland.

Servite- wallops VP with young team.

Brea beats Fullerton 28-15

La Habra beats Diamond Ranch again 44-11

Sunny Hills beats Gahr 38-0

At this point in the year, it usually seems like, if you play some tough guys in your preseason, then head into 6 weeks of
easy football, it makes the first round a bit tough. Especially if you have to go against
Edison, Los Al, Tesoro, Cathedral, Its like week 1 all over again. anything can happen.
In D-3 , looking ahead, a possible Grace, CDM, La Habra, Alemany semi looks good, but anything can happen?
Dark Horses- Lawndale, Cajon, Paraclete, westlake?
At this point...
MD
Bosco
MV
J SERRA
are seperating themselves from the top 10 in Orange County.
On the bubble.... CDM, Servite, La Habra, Tesoro

Curious to see how Costelli at MV handles the FLOWE and Upland. Since the La Habra game, MV has started passing a bit more, which is smart, because at that level, if you cant do both, you are out! MV was wasting alot of good talent at WR, as the run game got going. I know alot had to do with injury, but I think MV can tourch the Upland secondary if they have time.
Going on mixed counts will offset those animals in green. I also think MV can run too, on them.
Defensivly Uplands strength is running with Flowe, so the MV dline needs to get those shots and shut it down!
Last year was 40-0 VS a better Upland team, scary what this year might be??

Nice summation and landscape, speed killz, and if you decelerate even for a few games it can make you vulnerable.

What are the best ways to deal with weak comp in league and not loose game speed? Scrim first teams against each other, fast twitch training sounds obvious but what else can can be incorporated so as not fall into the trap?

HTL, it was not that wild a finish in the SC Edison game. It was 21-14 going into the 4th, half way thru the 4th SC scored with 6 min left to make it 21-21, then got the ball right back and went down and scored again with still 4 min left.

MV had the second team in the game in the second qtr and finished the half at 63-0. St Mary scored with a min left ( referee helped get them there) to make 63-7.

Speaking of Upland coming up, they have had two weeks to prepare - they did not have a game this past week. They will need it.

And lets give a big shout out to Marina football!!!!!!! They are 4-0 for the first time this century and put a big W on their schedule last night beating Huntington Beach (34-14) for the first time since 2004.

Westlake may not make the playoffs. I think it is shaping up to look like two of these three wont make it, REV, Santiago, or Westlake.

“Since the La Habra game, MV has started passing a bit more“

Hmm, I wonder why? What could have possibly changed?

Their garbage schedule is going to get them killed in the playoffs. MD could have dropped 100 on them last year and they’re better this year.

PTG-
I think the only thing good about playing in a weak league and not losing your high tempo is,
1- Getting guys healed up, for when it really counts. ROUND 1, ETC..
2- HIT-HIT-HIT!
3- ONES VS ONES
4- CONDITION AND LIFT
5- SPECIFIC TRAINING on what you didnt do vs the good teams.... execute
a- Goaline O and D / possible trick plays that could be the difference in a double OT game.
situations on covering the trick 2 point conversions.
b- special teams
c- run block / pass protection/ blitz pick ups
d- wr/ db indo's
e- film, film, film
f- continue to talk culture into existence
g- repeat
preperation!
know your enemies!
DBTG-
who would you like MV to play??
MD- BOSCO- CC- Bishop Gorman- Punaho, St. Louis Honolulu?
The class of 2021 for MV will be stacked and im sure they will up grade their preseason schedule to give them more clout. It just isnt sexy enough right now. I hear you.

Lets do a mock schedule.... preseason
St. Louis Hawaii-
Saguaro AZ-
Bishop Gorman NV-
Cathedral Catholic - San Diego
Jserra- Orange County
Would this get them ready for D-1, MD and Bosco, CC?

Tony-
Yes Upland will need it. They had all offseason to plan for La Habra, and didnt try to do what they do best until the 3rd quarter, RUN, RUN with Flowe . If Dedman comes back, he and number 5 are good too.
The problem is, there strength is going vs MV strength, front 7. Upland QB doesnt have the WR'S they had a year ago.
The QB is decent. MV should beat them close to the Villa Park score. Being 1 dimensional, and undiscipline vs a D-1 program of MV stature is a recipe for disaster.

DBTG-
who would you like MV to play??

I don't think scheduling MD/Bosco/CC is great idea early in the season (or any time for that manner.). It's an unnecessary beatdown, but they should challenge themselves with teams close to their level.

Jserra
Serra/Narbonne to mix it up
SM
Hell, maybe even a tough Edison team, they played SC real close.

Forget Hawaii, those games are a waste (but it's nice for recruiting) and they can find AZ quality team in San Diego.

Villa Park is exactly what they are , a good lower level team that beats up on lower level teams, not ready to play with the big boys yet. There is no way they deserve to be mentioned as a top OC public school program's, with Mission Viejo Edison , La Habra, CDM, San Clemente. They have been blown out 3 out of 4 games this year, i under stand that there playing div1 programs but at least be competitive, be a little prepared .
It was good to see my Friar's get payback for last years loss, super excited about what i saw friday of the friar's and the future of the program!!!!
