I am choosing to go the route (much) less traveled tonight and attending the Pacific Coast League opener between Irvine Beckman and Irvine Portola.

Can’t watch the Trinity Lg EVERY week and, we’ll, D14 schools need love too lol

Will be reporting live as long as phone power holds out.

In case you don’t already know, and I don’t see how you couldn’t, Portola HS is 4-1 with 4 straight wins after a season opening 2 point loss to Ontario Christian.

Per the Register: “ Portola is in its first season with seniors. The Bulldogs run the ball effectively, with sophomore Nova Kebeli at 369 rushing yards and eight touchdowns and junior Trevor Yue at 269 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Beckman has played better teams and that should have them better prepared.”

Beckman is 3-2, but ranked #5 in CIF D14 with wins over Troy, Eldorado of Las Vegas and Ocean View and losses to Foothill 42-14 and Esperanza 33-18.

Per the REGISTER, “Senior quarterback Jason Cheng (5-8, 160) continues to lead the Patriots offense with 418 passing yards and five passing touchdowns.”

Portola scores first with 7:23 left 1Q, short TD run off left tackle by Sr Joey Omar. Nice run.

EP good, 7-0 Bulldogs.

Beckman drives to the Portola 25, is stopped on downs with 4 straight incompletions. Patriots struggled to find the endzone with a lack of playmakers on the perimeter. Feels funny even typing that lol

Bulldogs driving, at about the Beckman 35. Patriots DB #23 picks up dead ball unsportsmanlike foul. Must have told a Portola kid that their purple unis are ugly. They kind of are.

1:02 left 1Q. Portola 1st down at Beckman 15.

Portola High School opened only a few years ago here near the Irvine Great Park development and has a really nice campus. Even the cement here smells new lol

Their cheer squad is definitely DEEP, at least 40 pairs of pink Pom Poms out there tonight. Not quite at MV levels yet though. Pretty diverse school for Irvine as well.

With this being the new feeder school for the entire Great Park housing, will be interesting to see if this place can develop into a powerhouse in the future with the expected infusion of new families moving in.

Portola stopped on downs after a holding penalty pushes them out of the red zone.

Beckman takes over with 11m remaining 2Q.

Beckman driving into Bulldog territory. Nifty run by Beckman QB Jason Cheng, a lefty who looks like a 5-8 Steve Young out there.

Cheng hits his favorite target, soph Aiden Fordyce for a couple completions. Followed by a pounding run by junior RB Jett Davis’s (two S’s-great name). 4m left, 3rd and 6 at the plus 17 for the Patriots.

Cheng rifles another seam throw to Fordyce for a first down. Then with 2:37 left Cheng takes a speed option keeper off right tackle for a diving touchdown over the top. Great effort. TD Pats.

2:37 left, 7-6 Beckman. The earlier Portola PAT was NOT good.

Beckman squib kickoff bounces off a Portola kid who wanted NO PARTS of it. Beckman swarms but the Bulldogs somehow recover. Or one of these old refs couldn’t tell. Anyway, Portola 1st down at the 35 or so.

Nice run off right tackle, busting tackles by Bulldog sophomore Nova Kabeli, another great name. Bulldogs movef back afternoon 2 penalties to the 33, 1:55 left. 2 and long. Becoming a bit of a penalty fest.

I guess MD and Bosco aren’t the only ones getting hit with flags this year.

Portola Bulldog offense drives 70+ yards into the green zone, again stopped short of the endzone, settles for FG try which is good.

Halftime, Bulldogs 9, Beckman Patriots 7.

Here comes the band with the furry purple tassel hats. ENTERTAINMENT

It’s kind of refreshing to watch two high school teams that look like ... high school teams.

Portola has about 12 kids that look like they cane straight from the cross country team, or 5th grade Irvine pop warner lol

Looks like Beckman has about 29 kids on the roster.

Scores around the PCL at half:

Northwood 25 Uni High 0

Beckman gets the 2nd half kick.

Tackled inside the 20. Pats will try to take the early 2nd half lead here with a LONG drive.

Portola student section is pretty active (matching shirts and caution vests); going to need to step their game up to match the best units in the county though.

Portola forces a quick 3 and out to start the half. Beckman punt down at the Portola 45.

9:41 left 3Q

Portola 5-9 QB Brandon Yue with a pretty corner route throw complete into Beckman territory.

A couple runs land ball at the Beckman 35. Yue badly overthrows his intended target but Beckman DB was holding on for dear life and Portola gets penalty first down.

Ball on 16, Portola goes power formation abd Nova Kabeli bangs down to the 8.

Next play Kabeli takes it on the power off left side for an 8 yard TD.

EP good. 6:38 3Q Portola 16, Beckman 7.

This kid Kabeli at RB for Portola is a sophomore, 5-9 185, looks really good. It’s a good thing no Trinity teams or MV coaches are present tonight lol

Beckman with a nice drive, mix of run and pass, from its own 20 down to the Portola 7, 1st and goal.

Key moment here as Patriots need to score before the quarter.

RB fumbles at the 5, picked up by Beckman QB and advanced to the 1. 3 and goal. Timeout Beckman.

Beckman fumbles again on 3rd down exchange. 4th and goal, Beckman will attempt 23 yard FG.

Formation penalty, moved back 5, now a 28 yarder. Kick is up and good.

:35 left 3Q. Portola 16 Beckman 10.

This could be a nail biter in the 4th. Parents on edge lol

Portola comes right back with some hard running by Kabeli, kicks 38 yard FG for 19-10 lead with 9:49 left.

Beckman ball at the 24.

Northwood up 32-0 on the Uni Trojans. Rough year over at Uni.

The QBs brother Trevor Yue running hard for Portola as well. Bulldogs have ball inside the 20 with 7m left and ticking. They score here and this one will be cooked glazed and sliced.

As soon as I type that, Kabeli takes another one up the middle, breaks a tackle and scores from about 17 out.

25-10 Portola and this one is all but over.

Bulldogs line up for 2, force Beckman to use a timeout. Come back with a naked bootleg, Yue walks in around right side.

27-10 Portola 6:19 left and Beckman would be heading for the exits if it wasn’t just parents and friends.

Portola gets a stop and runs out the clock.

Final Bulldogs 27, Patriots 10.

Statement win for the Portola program and they now are in 1st place in the PCL.

Maybe the smallest 1st place team in the CIFSS, but they’ve got a good RB duo and these kids play hard. Could be between them and Northwood for the PCL title.

They’ll meet in two weeks at Portola. Go Bulldogs

Don’t sleep on the Portola Bulldogs lol

Didn’t realize that this was the first varsity league win in school history. They lost their first 5 PCL games last year by a combined 182-62. Good for them, that is INDEED the biggest win in school history, unquestionably, and I was there! (Full disclosure: I walked out with 2m left lol)

Will be fun to see how far this team can take this thing. They could end up 9-1 going into the D14 playoffs if they can get past what looks like their main league challenge in Northwood. D14 involves a mishmash of schools from all over SoCal and is wide open. We could actually see a team with its first year of seniors, that started the program a few years ago with a TOTAL of 12 kids, that is in only its second year of varsity competition ... win a CIF title.

That’s almost like a ... small town Texas Cinderella story lol
