Putting a wrap on MD-Servite weekend:
Heard after the game that the Mater Dei coaching staff was EXTREMELY MOTIVATED to whip Servite’s a$$e$ on Friday night (probably moreso than the players) because of what happened in postgame last year, AND some disrespect shown at Trinity Lg media day.
Was told that after last year’s game, Troy Thomas not only barely shook Rollo’s hand, walked right past him, and refused to even cordially speak with him, but also told Rollo “F— you” when Rollo continued to try to engage with him on the field. There was also some back and forth between others on the two staffs.
Rollo is known to let most coach squabbles go, like his little spats with Harry Welch, but from what I was told, he has been REALLY pissed off about what Thomas did for like 365 days lol. It didn’t help that T-Bone supposedly continued to give Rollo the cold shoulder at TL Media Day, while all the other head coaches interacted. Apparently most of the TL coaches aren’t very fond of T-Bone (Go figure lol). And by the way, I’m only adding terms like “supposedly” because I wasn’t there, not because I don’t believe what I was told, which I believe 1000% considering who we’re talking about.
After last Saturday’s workout, Rollo got the team together, reiterated his hatred for Servite, and in very clear words told them he wanted this to be a bloodbath.
If you watch Rollo and Bryce Young’s postgame interviews, you can hear them allude to Rollo’s directive, and Steve Fryer touched on it in his recap column:
“There has been bad blood between the Mater Dei and Servite football programs in the past, even back when Rollinson was playing for Mater Dei in the 1960s. That bad blood, stirred up between the respective coaching staffs at the end of last year’s Mater Dei-Servite game won by Mater Dei 35-0, was noticeable again Friday night. ‘There were some issues that had to be addressed,’ Rollinson said after Friday’s game, ‘and you remember last year — it wasn’t a good situation, and now it’s over and done with.’”
“For Mater Dei’s current players, St. John Bosco is the team’s big rival. For people who have been in and around the Mater Dei football program since before Mater Dei’s players of today were born, Servite remains the big rival. ‘Coach Rollo isn’t a huge fan of Servite,’ Young said. ‘We knew that. On Saturday we talked about it and he said, “I need this one for us (the coaching staff) and for the seniors,” and when Rollo asks for one, we have to have his back.’”
Suffice it to say, T-Bone and Rollo won’t be golfing together this offseason, Rollo definitely enjoyed this win, and give him and Dave Money full credit for not twisting the knife a bit more in the 4th quarter, because the Monarchs could have easily put 80+ on Servite. Rollo probably would have tried to score a couple more TDs in the 4th if he was toting the rock lol
