we better figure out losing to bosco by 1 because the refs were on the troy thomas pay roll can not be the defining moment of the year.
btw after watching the game on film and seeing the amazing bad calls in favor of us, the MVP of last weeks game vs bosco was clearly the refs. no wonder negro was going ape-Hello Kitty rocks!

were still the team that 2 weeks ago beat ND sherman oaks by only 3.

since when do moral victories mean more than actually victories.

i have a funny feeling we lose to jserra this week and everybody learns the bosco game was a fluke

dont be that guy wrote:RPW- reading your synopsis of the game was entertaining. The one thing that stands out, and has been an issue for MD, has been penalties. They are so good that they have no problem overcoming them, but 200 yards of penalties? Good lord. Watching the game it could have been worse. Rollo clearly had them fired up for the game but they made stupid penalty after stupid penalty. PI on defense and Holding on offense on nearly every other play. That and all the stupid personal fouls and extra nonsense. The D can’t tackle someone and simply get up? They have to get “tangled up” with them and step over the player when their down then talk sh#t. They are too good to be bush league. Dominate and show respect. No mater what the other team says.

You could try and argue the validly of the penalties, but this is every single week. It’s not the refs because its a different crew every week. It’s the team.

Like I said, it doesn’t matter since they have the best player at nearly every position on the field and they will dominate, but it’s just an ugly side of an amazing team.
Bush league? You ain't from around these parts, are ya? This is a bitter, bitter rivalry. If anything, MD played nice.

Agree with you on the holding and PI, though.

Omar, you have forgotten in just a week that Servite lost a game because they could not kick an extra point. Going for 2 may have been their best option.

I didn't forget. According to the game log Kevin Ryan was 2 of 4 on PATs last week. Either he's hurt or been demoted?

So it wasn't some kind of statement on TT's part. Just struck me as curious that they didn't let the kid (Lucas Gimenez) who had just kicked a 40 yd. FG try the PAT...

Lol thanks man; reading your hot take on MD‘s penalties was entertaining too.

I’m not sure if you’ve watched any other MD games this season, but penalties actually have not been an issue for Mater Dei this year ... up until this crew arrived at the Bowl last night. Mater Dei has not been “overcoming penalties because they are good.” Especially not compared to the last couple of years, where justifiable penalty calls were a legitimate issue for them; this game was a total aberration compared to the first 6 games of 2019.

And having actually been at the entire game, and being forced to watch every one of the seemingly 100+ flags thrown on these teams, this wasn’t a Mater Dei issue. Or even a Servite issue. It was yet another issue with CIF zebras throwing laundry first (even when horribly out of position) and asking questions later (i.e. “let’s huddle up to figure out how we can justify that call”).

It is a different crew every week, you’re right; and this crew was particularly horrible. It’s not arguing the validity of the flags to say many, if not most of these flags were not even close to justified; its just recognizing how ridiculous so many of these calls were. Good Lord, indeed.

Again, being at the game, I respectfully disagree, because it couldn’t possibly have been worse for Mater Dei, Servite, this crew, or the fans; it was as bad as it gets. The refs threw stupid, unjustifiable flag after absurd, unjustifiable flag.

The flag issues in this game were definitely not attributable to some systemic malfunction within Mater Dei’s matrix, as it seems you’re describing it. This was a uniquely despicable set of officials that may have set an all time record for penalty yardage disparity between two teams.

Also, I’m not sure if we were watching the same game, but the team doing almost ALL of the talking sh*+, pushing after the play, stepping over kids, getting tangled up, engaging in extra nonsense and “bush league” stuff ... that was Servite. It was actually embarrassing for them to be acting like that, especially in that 42-3 first half.

It was as if Servite’s SENIOR LEADERS like Karrington Dennis (who nearly started a brawl by flooring Bryce Young with a dirty late hit after BY had already scored a touchdown in the 2nd quarter) said “F it, if we’re going to get blown out by these guys again, I’m at least going to make sure I hit them, even if it’s after the play, out of bounds, or after they’ve already scored.”

That’s a loser mentality, unacceptable, and I’m sure it’s not the kind of message Troy wants to instill in the program for all his star sophomores.

Mater Dei certainly didn’t back down from their little brother, and unfortunately engaged in retaliation too many times, due to Servite’s unending cheap trash. I really can’t blame them though; Servite’s (mis)conduct was that bad.

the Servite “Asylum” cheer section was actually hooting in support of the Friars’ unsportsmanlike penalties in the 2nd quarter. The entire stadium, even the Servite fans, was in shock at that, like, wow, are these kids serious? Lol. If anyone needed to show respect for the game and the rivalry last night, it was the kids in black uniforms, playing like losers with no class. Servite High School has a higher standard than that.

Troy Thomas, who has conducted himself with little to no class in these past two blowout losses to his arch rival, needs to do some self reflection, because facing the Stache and that team in Red clearly has him (and his players) acting totally out of pocket.

He needs to set a better example for his players, because what they displayed in front of 8K fans and both schools’ alums for the majority of last night was a team with no discipline, poise, toughness, intelligence, or respect for the integrity of the game. Notice I didn’t even mention the skill, preparation or coaching deficiencies. If they were the #1 team in America that wouldn’t be acceptable behavior, but as a mediocre, borderline Division 1 team, they are not anywhere near good enough to act like that.

Red Pill, just want to say thanks for your contributions, as a fan I don’t think we get better analysis anywhere, there are many good contributors on this board as well.

Now where do we get the comprehensive analysis you bring to the table. Thank you sir for your time!

Appreciate the shout out PTG! We appreciate your insights on the Diablos as well my guy! As a matter of fact, we need to get a thread going on this whole Chad Johnson v. The Trinity League thing, and get your take on it ...

Before I forget, I want to shout out a couple of Mater Dei kids this year that aren’t 5 star recruits and don’t get the national acclaim some of their teammates do, but have been playing like stars and absolutely BALLING OUT all season: senior inside LB Rey Leutele and junior DE Tyler Narayan.

Leutele has been the Monarch defensive MVP this year as far as I’m concerned, and had his best game of the season against Servite (although he was a monster against St Frances as well). He blew up Servite’s backfield twice in the first half for 5-6 yard TFLs on A gap blitzes, and almost decapitated T McMillan coming across the middle in the second half. He playing at a level similar to 2017 Mase Funa. Not even sure he has an offer yet.

Narayan came into the year as an afterthought on the DL behind Salazar and Tupe, and has earned his starting spot next to those kids - and over La Habra transfer Andrew Ueli Faatoalia. He had a sack and forced fumble on Noah Fifita which was caught in mid air by Dean Neeley and returned 40 yards for a TD. He reminds me a bit of former Mater Dei all state, CIF MVP Nate Logoleo, who was undersized and under-recruited.

Don’t be surprised if one or both of these kids make a key play down the stretch for Eric Johnson’s defense; they’ve made a ton already.

I agree, both Leutele and Narayan have been great. Dean Neeley has been having a great season and has made some great plays too. Having Moses and Tupe back and hungry ads great depth to the MD defense.

The front 7 has been great at bringing pressure on the QB. yea there have been a few times the MD db's have been burned, but, you can count that on one hand for the entire season. The MD defense only needs to stop a team the majority of the time.

The issue for anyone playing MD is to stop MD's offense. To stop MD you would need 2018 IMG with Trey Sanders and Noah Cain behind a euuugh line to ground and pound controlling the clock and wearing down MD's defense. St. Francis was the only team this season that had the line and Blake Corum and that wasn't enough. Even SJC's big man child back only got one good run on MD.

I don't think Bosco has that kind of running game this season and line like 2016 Bosco did to ball control and keep JT and co off the field.

But, they do have home field and it's going to be a heavyweight slugfest!

and unlike the past two teams, this MD team seems lazer focused.

The Servite game officiating was pretty poor. Did anyone else catch the announcer a few times with "17-yard penalty for holding" seemed the officials were having some trouble with walking off the penalties?

JT? By coincidence he was on the field Friday night...

The only way I see is to throw short quick passes to hopefully negate the rush and somehow slowdown the aggressive LB blitzes, maybe some quick outs and swing passes to the RBs to go 'round them. Methodical, keeping the MD O off the field. Throw the occasional long pass just to see if you've caught them napping.

It will take a perfectly coached and executed game to pull it off, but it's been done before, just last year in fact. I have a feeling Rollo will be driving that point home every day til the game...

Bosco 49 JSerra 10

(I feel like kick coverage hasn’t been much of an issue for Bosco this year, but this will be an interesting third rail issue to pay some attention to for the MD game, as both Marceese Yetts and Quincy Craig for Mater Dei are dangerous return threats and could produce a game changing return if SJB’s coverage isn’t on point. Re: JSerra, Sammy Green makes another big play and has been their best offensive threat recently)

(DJ put the filthy Euro Step move on Zamajay Duncan, sends him flying to the turf face down, barely avoids getting caught from behind on LONG TD run, gets up and stares down the JSerra student section while talking some sh*+ next to Logan Loya and Kris Hutson, love it lol)

(Pretty sure that is the FIRST INT of the season for DJ (in the 7th game!), Carson transfer New Zealand Williams has been arguably JSerra’s best player this season, next to Malaki Te’o)

(General Booty and offensive coordinator Eric Rescigno’s offense has been STRUGGLING this year to be consistent.)

(DJ has really been on his Cam Newton thing this year with all these TD runs. That’s got to be at least 5-6 rushing TDs, which is probably as many as he has from his soph and junior years combined. Not that he couldnt run before, but very Impressive effort by the kid in upping his athleticism in the offseason)

(That was a FREAKING LASER BEAM, flat footed! Arm talent is ridiculous, best I’ve ever seen at the HS level other than Matt Stafford, Jacob Eason and Ryan Mallett)

(Bosco screens this season — to backs and WRs — have been LETHAL, Eric Lo does a great job designing them and calling them with perfect timing, kids execute those plays extremely well. Jode McDuffie has also quietly become a WEAPON for Bosco this year as a junior; on tape he looks like their fastest player, Speedy Luke and Hutson included)

(DJ to Hutson has been Bosco’s go to connection this year; Hutson really is a reliable kid, gonna be good at Oregon or wherever he actually signs. runs great routes, not super fast testing speed but he’s explosive in games. If he didn’t talk so much unnecessary sh*+ after almost EVERY PLAY I would like him even more lol)

Honestly, watching the replay, it kind of looked like JSerra quit in the second half. Other than last year’s game at Bosco, they have folded in pretty much every matchup with Bosco and MD since Harlow took over. They need to get that figured out. HUGE matchup for playoff positioning and Probably 3rd Place in league this week with Servite, both teams coming off humiliating losses.

also think that they need a little more creativity on offense against a MD or Bosco. Something that Hartigan did well. Current regime is too predictable.

Also have doubts about Booty as well. More consistent QB play gets rid of the 8-men in the box stuff.

Putting a wrap on MD-Servite weekend:

Heard after the game that the Mater Dei coaching staff was EXTREMELY MOTIVATED to whip Servite’s a$$e$ on Friday night (probably moreso than the players) because of what happened in postgame last year, AND some disrespect shown at Trinity Lg media day.

Was told that after last year’s game, Troy Thomas not only barely shook Rollo’s hand, walked right past him, and refused to even cordially speak with him, but also told Rollo “F— you” when Rollo continued to try to engage with him on the field. There was also some back and forth between others on the two staffs.

Rollo is known to let most coach squabbles go, like his little spats with Harry Welch, but from what I was told, he has been REALLY pissed off about what Thomas did for like 365 days lol. It didn’t help that T-Bone supposedly continued to give Rollo the cold shoulder at TL Media Day, while all the other head coaches interacted. Apparently most of the TL coaches aren’t very fond of T-Bone (Go figure lol). And by the way, I’m only adding terms like “supposedly” because I wasn’t there, not because I don’t believe what I was told, which I believe 1000% considering who we’re talking about.

After last Saturday’s workout, Rollo got the team together, reiterated his hatred for Servite, and in very clear words told them he wanted this to be a bloodbath.

If you watch Rollo and Bryce Young’s postgame interviews, you can hear them allude to Rollo’s directive, and Steve Fryer touched on it in his recap column:

“There has been bad blood between the Mater Dei and Servite football programs in the past, even back when Rollinson was playing for Mater Dei in the 1960s. That bad blood, stirred up between the respective coaching staffs at the end of last year’s Mater Dei-Servite game won by Mater Dei 35-0, was noticeable again Friday night. ‘There were some issues that had to be addressed,’ Rollinson said after Friday’s game, ‘and you remember last year — it wasn’t a good situation, and now it’s over and done with.’”

“For Mater Dei’s current players, St. John Bosco is the team’s big rival. For people who have been in and around the Mater Dei football program since before Mater Dei’s players of today were born, Servite remains the big rival. ‘Coach Rollo isn’t a huge fan of Servite,’ Young said. ‘We knew that. On Saturday we talked about it and he said, “I need this one for us (the coaching staff) and for the seniors,” and when Rollo asks for one, we have to have his back.’”

Suffice it to say, T-Bone and Rollo won’t be golfing together this offseason, Rollo definitely enjoyed this win, and give him and Dave Money full credit for not twisting the knife a bit more in the 4th quarter, because the Monarchs could have easily put 80+ on Servite. Rollo probably would have tried to score a couple more TDs in the 4th if he was toting the rock lol

Noah Fifita, who according to some football geniuses on the board is a diamond in the rough comparable to Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield, had as many passing yards as Mater Dei WR Kody Epps had receiving yards in this game.

He took 5 sacks and connected with Mater Dei middle backer Dean Neeley for as many touchdowns as he threw to his own team.

This is the best QB in the class of 2022?! ROFL Apparently only when playing Villa Park and JW North

Little Noah learned the hard way that Mater Dei’s defense is a bit different, even when the refs were trying to help him and his receivers as much as they did against Bosco. His top target Zed Centers didn’t even have a catch!

Hey, at least he’s a leader. I mean he must be, because he and Tetairoa MacMillian are already acting captains for Servite.

Which says all you need to know about the senior leadership up there on La Palma

TMAC was held to 7 catches for 48 yards in a 1 on 1 matchup with Mater Dei sophomore Domani Jackson. There’s always next week.......

Similar dynamic in south OC. The older alums at SM think MD is their big rival; if you went there in the last 10 years it's JSerra that get's the majority of the venom. If you are a coach at JSerra SM is definitely the school you have to beat to have job security.
