Jason and Bruce: A May-December Bromance

Post by Omar Bongo »

First some background. Friday will mark the 14th time these two coaches will have faced off since Negro took over at Bosco. Jason is 6-3 against Bruce in league and they've split 4 CIF playoff meetings, all in the Final. Here’s a look at their history with overall and league records in parentheses:

2010
MD (8-5/3-2) 31
SJB (5-5/1-4) 20

2011
SJB (8-4/3-2) 24
MD (4-6/2-3) 3

2012
SJB (8-5/5-0) 27
MD (11-3/4/1) 19

2013
SJB (16-0/5-0) 24
MD (11-3/3-2) 2

CIF Final
SJB 34
MD 7

2014
SJB (12-2/5-0) 28
MD ( 9-3/3-2) 25

2015
SJB (13-1/5-0) 42
MD (10-3/3-2) 21

2016
MD (13-1/5-0) 26
SJB (13-2/4-1) 21

CIF Final
SJB 42
MD 28

2017
MD (15-0/5-0) 31
SJB (12-3/4-1) 21

CIF Final

SJB 24

2018
SJB (13-1/5-0) 41
MD (13-2/4-1) 18

CIF Final
MD 17
SJB 13

2019 ?

I may have some numbers wrong but since MDDAD isn’t here maybe no one will notice...

I call it a bromance because outwardly the two men seem to genuinely like and respect each other. Case in point- after last year's MD win in the final that ended Bosco's perfect run and chance at a consensus National Championship the two coaches met at midfield and shook hands. Rollinson said something that cracked Negro up and Jason continued to smile as he patted Bruce on the shoulder and congratulated him on the win. It was a remarkable sight considering the bitter disappointment he must have been feeling at that moment. I always wondered what Rollinson said that made Negro laugh...maybe something along the lines of "Aren't you glad I didn't try to run up the score to impress the pollsters like you did in our first game"?

Anyways the game this week should be interesting since it's almost (but not quite) a lock that they'll meet yet again in the final. Do you keep your cards close to the vest or do you audition your game plan for next time when it's for all the marbles?

Don't get the feeling the relationship is the same with either of these two and Troy Thomas.

TT is a different breed of cat...maybe a couple more titles and he'll loosen up a little

Didn't realize this but it's #1 vs. #2 in another way. According to Maxpreps:

"For the first time ever during the modern recruiting rankings era (1999) the top two quarterbacks will be playing against each other. 2020 Clemson commit DJ Uiagalelei checks in as the No. 1 rated QB and 2020 Alabama commit Bryce Young is the top dual-threat quarterback and No. 2 overall."

Also, besides the QBs there will 47 other players either rated as a 3-star recruit or with at least one FBS offer on the field as well, that's gotta be a record too

thats why Bosco has become the new main rival for MD, for new generation members of the MD community, but for old-school members of the MD community, Servite is the arch-rival.

You mean he took advantage of something any school could do with the current ticketing process?

Does Old Sunset come in those handy pint bottles for people on the go?

Ah, America. Seems even people who routinely spout their unwavering love of capitalism and the free market need a mulligan now and then

Okay, you guys had your chance

Just watched the reply of the first game last year (SJB 41-18) and when it was over the broadcasters observed that Jason seemed to have pulled out all the stops to get the win and speculated as to whether they had saved any tricks for the possible CIF rematch.

The situation this week is practically a carbon copy of last year. I don't see Mater Dei changing what they do, indeed why should they since no one has stopped them yet, but it will be interesting to see if Jason throws in a new bell or whistle and goes all-out again like last year.

I think it depends on whether he thinks he has the horses to beat MD twice. If he does, he repeats last year's gambit. If he doesn't, he plays a vanilla game, possibly sacrificing a national championship for the chance to win state.

Or, option #3- he plays it vanilla till halftime, inputs that data into the equation and makes the call then...

That’s two bad attempts at being funny.

It’s not capitalism if they knew they where going to sell it out no matter what..... it’s wrong

Biggest game of the year for both teams (until playoffs), their families and fans.
I never heard of a school being so pathetic.

Make that three: At least when I use four-letter words in my posts I spell them correctly :D

Can you cite any law that was broken? As the gentleman pointed out, this is hardly a precedent. Not that I approve, though...one gets the feeling this was why they built the damn thing in the first place

Being that you don’t approve ... you should understand this is not a legal issue it’s about doing the right thing.

They could’ve sold all 5,000 tickets to themselves or all the tickets to anybody the dollar amount is the same.

When they put the 4,000 tickets up for sale they said for Bosco fans. The next group of tickets went online but the link was given to Bosco fans before general public (Mater Dei).

Have another drink and send back more of your crap...

Play the game.

I was pretty sure it was you - you have dozens of backup accounts I'm sure.

I know you read what I wrote about this earlier because you turned it into a personal attack. I and others here agree, it's not the right thing to do. But we live in a world where a million times a day the right thing is not done.

Whaddiya gonna do about it besides beat it to death here...

Break the cycle.

Funny stuff this, spoken like a true racetrack burnout:

The time St. John Bosco defeated Mater Dei last season was when before the game the Braves were dancing in the locker room and looked relaxed and confident. Check out the music level tomorrow night.
