I personally don’t foresee HS football stars in the Southern Section (for example) making a million bucks WHILE STILL IN high school. But then again, it’s technically allowed here, so who knows? If Texas didn’t outlaw it, Quinn Ewers has said he’d still be playing for Southlake Carroll instead of signing million dollar autograph deals as a 4th stringer at Ohio St. How much better is Quinn Ewers than Malachi Nelson or Arch Manning will be in 2022? Is he better than Bryce or DJ were in 2019, or JT in 2017? In the future we could theoretically see a local QB throw a TD on Bally’s Sports, right before the broadcast goes to a commercial with the same QB telling you to go buy an E Class from Fletcher Jones like his dad. Or telling you to stop at Randy’s Donuts in Costa Mesa after the game for a sweet treat! None of that would jeopardize his college eligibility as it stands now, and unless and until it’s regulated by the state, it wouldn’t be illegal or jeopardize his CIF eligibility either. Like Rollo said at Trinity Lg media day, both the CIF and NCAA have provided no guidance on this (purposely), and until they do, anything is possible.

There is no doubt that the clear messaging that schools like Bama and Clemson and Notre Dame are sending to recruits, directly and indirectly, is being heard loud and clear. CJ Williams, one of the most mature, well-raised HS students there has ever been, wore a “NILLIONAIRE” t-shirt to his Notre Dame announcement ceremony. Coaches like Saban and Dabo and Brian Kelly are acting like they are concerned about NIL and it’s lack of regulation one minute, but in the next breath are letting recruits know what their potential partnerships and value could be if they come play for them.

You think it was an accident that Saban let it slip at the Texas HS Coaches Assoc. meeting this summer that Bryce is making almost a million bucks off NIL before starting a game at Bama (adding in that it represents “the power of our program”)?? You think he didn’t know that would: 1) go public immediately and be an international headline, and 2) be tattooed on the minds of those Texas HS coaches when they talk with their top prospects about whether they should choose Bama, LSU, or Texas A&M??

I hope we stay away from NIL money being at stake at the HS level, and creating an environment where that becomes sought after by certain families. That would be ugly, very ugly. Here and anywhere else.

But there’s no doubt there is A LOT of it at stake at the college level now, and for these top prospects it’s changed the entire recruiting game.

Good to see John Jackson back in action. Hall of Fame HS football TV analyst.

I really hope that Stanford or USC don’t waste David Bailey’s college football career or tarnish the sparkle on the diamond.

David Bailey attended the first half of the SC-San Jose St game with SC commit Domani Jackson and Oklahoma commit Raleek Brown before leaving to go over to the Rose Bowl for the UCLA-LSU game. Said he and his family were surprised by the amount of traffic on the way to Pasadena, didn’t get there until the 2nd quarter. Welcome to LA kid; rare to see 101 freeway-level gridlock in OC.

Says SC is recruiting him harder than his other finalists (Stanford, UCLA, Cal, Oregon, Washington). Wants to use him like potential 1st round draft pick and Cen10 alum Drake Jackson. Good friends with Trojans frosh LB Raesjon Davis.

This kid Kyle Crum at Norco is torching everything this year. Recruiting heavily impacted by COVID shutdowns. Some school will get a steal at QB late in the process.

Domani Jackson and his parents are at Michigan and will be at the Big House for the game against Washington tomorrow. Wolverines trying to change his Trojan mind.

This past Friday-Sunday: Domani takes visit to Michigan with many other top recruits across the nation and Michigan commits, including being at The Big House for their 31-10 win over a hapless Washington team.

Monday: USC fires Clay Helton after humiliating beatdown loss at home to Stanford (down 42-13 in the 4th).

Also Monday: Domani says he’s still committed to SC, but considering Bama and Michigan - and no one else. Says his phone is blowing up from schools local, regional, and national.

November: Domani will visit Alabama for the LSU game.

Well, that escalated quickly. #GoBlue

In this cycle alone, Boise State has now gotten big-timed by both Michigan State (Bosco QB Katin Houser) and Michigan (Graham of Servite) for their Trinity League committed recruits. Seems to happen to them (or almost happen) every year during the season. For some senior recruits, its almost like committing to BSU makes other schools pursue them harder. Especially if they then go out and have a great offseason camp tour (i.e. Elite 11 for Houser) or have a great senior season.

No surprise that former Boise coach Chris Petersen had a rule against visiting any other schools for committed recruits when he was HC there. It’s a double standard, because every school certainly continues to offer and recruit other kids at the same position after taking a commitment from one player. But understandable to try and protect your recruits from being swayed. Hard for a kid like Mason Graham to turn down an offer from the Michigan Wolverines late in the process after he’s gone out and earned it with great senior year film. Especially when he knows he has the size, skill, and ability to play at that level (he does). Great wrestler too.

Fox Sports NFL color commentator and NFL Network analyst Charles Davis with another nice “Sports Stars of Tomorrow” piece here, on Raleek Brown:

These young men get commoditized and critiqued so much as recruits, it’s nice to see them contextualized as the kids they still are. MD hater advisory: this is pretty much a feature on Rollo as well. Interesting note: Raleek is being recruited to Oklahoma by wide receivers coach Dennis Simmons, and the Sooners expect him to primarily play slot WR (his best long term fit IMO). 4-star RB Gavin Sawchuk of Valor Christian HS in Denver is committed to OU as well. Raleek will definitely get backfield carries and some snaps at RB in that Lincoln Riley offense.

Too late. Georgia or Ohio State. Unless SC brings back Pete Carroll.

High possibility that the Santa Margarita defense could be facing the future quarterback and wide receivers of the Oklahoma Sooners tonight at Saddleback College. Raleek Brown may stop by to check out his future college teammates.

That sucks. Prayers for the kid.

Jadyn still had the long TD run and continued a great senior year and return to Norco. Did this incident have anything to do with his sudden decommitment from Berkeley? Seems odd.

The University of Oklahoma is raiding California. Has one HS ever had a 5 star QB and two 5 star WR recruits all committed to the same powerhouse college program? Throw in Raleek Brown and we’re watching the future Sooner offense right here in OC.

Whoever gets the SC job should at least try to put a dent in one of the wagon wheels of that Sooner Schooner that’s triple parked in Los Alamitos.

Former SC coach Lane Kiffin is spending Ole Miss’ bye week recruiting in SoCal. At Mater Dei today …

Kiffin will be at the Inglewood game tonight to watch 6-4 senior QB Justyn Martin, who just disengaged from Cal and will visit UCLA soon. Will be interesting to see which local kids get offers from the Lane Train this weekend. Oaks Christian/Long Beach Poly’s Matt Corral and the “Rebels” play Bryce Young and Alabama next week in a Heisman front runner matchup.

This kid Weston Port is a player.

Question is will he finish his career as a San Juan Hills Stallion, a SM Eagle, or somewhere else?

Sidenote: how about winless SJH beating undefeated El Toro?

This is good news for all players on the field, especially the lightly recruited seniors who’ve had their opportunities to be seen evaporated by COVID.

Every Pac 12, Mountain West, and Big Sky program should be getting in as many in-person SoCal evals as possible this fall after being in extended dead periods over the course of 18 months.

Here’s a kid that could at least play in the Big Sky:
