Sad Day at Eagle Cam

Postby crayegg » Tue Apr 26, 2011 12:56 pm

To those of us who have been following the eagle cam link that was provided in the other thread re hummingbird (http://www.wvec.com/marketplace/microsite-content/eagle-cam.html), today is a sad day. The Momma eagle was struck by an airplane and killed. The Dad has not yet come back to the nest to feed the eaglets, so it is kinda up in the air right now. Since the nest is monitored, I do not think they will let the eaglets starve to death, but if Dad doesn't come back it looks pretty bad.

I watched last Thursday as the guy climbed the tree and 1 by 1 sent them down to the ground to be tagged, weighed and sexed. I was amazed at how docile the eaglets were.

A friend who lives in Norfolk happily reported that dad has returned to the nest with a fish

They were actually hunting together when it happened, but the Dad managed to get out of the way of the airplane.

Mom died and they were taken away from their father because they felt he wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of being a single parent... It takes both parents to provide enough food for them
