How fast was your first internet connection?

Post by John Q. Public »

The latest in a series of "Just Curious" polls. Part of what prompted me to ask was that I downloaded a 56 meg program this morning in about a minute. The number stood out because I remember downloading a 56 meg program about 10 years ago or so and it took a day and a half.

Mine was 9,600 baud and I had an old Tandy "laptop" for work that was even slower. I've heard that some hipsters use dial-up on purpose but I can't understand why. I'd imagine even pages that are considered "fast" these days would be agonizing to wait for.

So what was yours?

I 'm now thinking 14,400....IMB clone 486DX2-66. 300 meg hard drive..hi and lo range (?) 4Megs of RAM....66 meg processor Intel...there was a time back in the early 90s a RAM plant in Japan burned or something, and RAM went to about $80 a meg or something outrageous like that for a short time...when I went to 8 megs, I had as fast a machine as could be had....1993....I remember bragging to my buddy the physics teacher...he called me a ***** or something as endearing. With a HP Laser B/W printer...$4200....for that computer set-up.

AOL.. I remember it taking about 36 hours to download a song. I remember the commercial with the young teenage kid trying to download something about dealing with girls and he ended up throwing the computer out the window? I felt like that many times.

I don't know if they had 14.4s in '93, did they?

My 486 had a "Turbo" light. Never did figure out what that meant.

Did you ever go over your time allotment? AOL minutes cost more than phone minutes back then.

I know, I'm debating how much longer I can hold out before I have to commit suicide in some dramatically cool fashion.

I never did any of those but an old GF showed me a couple on her Compaq "portable" about that time. It had a built-in 4" or 5" screen(!) and it was about the size of a desktop except it had a handle. I think it probably cost her around $2,000.

Newsgroups were the place when I finally got my own.

I don't really recall, so I voted the lowest one, but it was friggin' slow, and dial up, and through AOL (which was touted as "fast").

The dial-up sounds getting into AOL were obnoxious.

My first was 300 baud and the browser was something Prodigy. If I recall Prodigy was backed by Sears.
Thought for the day:
We are always hearing about how Social Security is going to run out of money.
How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money?

Probably not...I do remember getting 14.4K, but I believe the earlier hook-ups were probably slower.
