2024 Los Angeles Olympics

Post by Fordama » Tue Jul 28, 2015 9:36 am

Now that Boston has wimped out of its bid, L.A. may step up. Bring the Olympics back to a city where it actually worked.

Since '84, four new major venues have been added in the region--the Staples Center, Galen Center, Stub Hub Center, and the Honda Center. mass transit has been greatly improved in the region with the expansion of rail, and more lines are scheduled to be finished by 2024--including one to LAX.

By the way, wiki has this page which lists all the venues from the '84 Olympics.

Just finished two days of volunteering for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games here in LA. Single largest event in LA since the 1984 LA Olympics.

I don't think LA should host another Olympic games until they address a number of infrastructure problems, first of which is the traffic. Road conditions are also very poor in many areas. We have new venues, but we also have some very old venues that are showing their age. They would be inappropriate for the standard that has been set for Olympic competition. It isn't just about the field of play (whatever that might be) but also about accomodating the spectators.

The traffic concern was the same for the 84 Olympics, but that fear simply didn't pan out. None of the Metrolink existed at the time, and a number more lines are already scheduled to be finished in several years.

There would obviously have to be work to be done, but LA is far, far closer than any other city in the U.S., and most of the world.

I was a driver for the Special Olympics on Monday and Tuesday of this week. I can tell you first hand. Traffic is a problem. The venues are spread out and travel some of the busiest freeways in the nation during some of the busiest times.

If they do get it, I hope the cycle of one-upmanship in the opening ceremonies and some of the venues is broken by then. They're spectacular and all, but it's getting to look like a contest to see who can spend the most money. It detracts from the purpose of the games, for me at least.

Kent Twitchell's mural of Rafer Johnson and Loretta Claiborne for the Special Olympics. I wanted to post it somewhere. I guess this is as good as any.

In 1984 traffic issues were resolved by getting trucks off the road during the day.

Don't know if that would work this time.

Apparently a deal has been struck, and Los Angeles will be our Olympic Committee's proposed site for the 2024 Olympics. Apparently it hinges on a vote by the L.A. City Council on Tuesday night. Seeing how polling is showing a ridiculously high approval rating (80%) of Angelenos in favor of the bid, I have to think it's going to pass.

Awesome news! I think Los Angeles would make for a great Olympics.
