(AP) INDIANAPOLIS — JR Hildebrand was one turn away from winning the Indianapolis 500 at the first attempt. Then, within sight of the checkered flag, the 23-year-old Californian made the ultimate rookie mistake.So... who's Dan Weldon? Who's JR Hildebrand? What in the hell has happened to the Indy 500? Does anybody even notice it any more? If we think hard enough, most of us can come up with the names of at least a few NASCAR, Formula 1 or NHRA drivers and maybe a few motocross riders and professional wrestlers but very few of us could name even one Indy car driver who hasn't been retired for 20 years. Hell, I'm not even familiar with the names of some of the major sponsors.
Hildebrand slammed into the wall on the final turn, and Dan Wheldon drove past to claim an improbable Indy 500 win Sunday in his first race of the year.
Sad that the IRL has taken America's greatest motorsports event and made it completely irrelevant.
