MD 51 OLu 14

MD cruises to 6-0 with another blowout v OLu, up 35-7 at half, final of 51-14. OLu played hard but as Rollo would say, just a “personnel difference.”

Bryce with 4 more TD throws to 4 different WRs (Ware Hudson, Williams, Epps, Zamora), but also throws his first INTs since the Corona Centennial game, his 2nd and 3rd of the year, all 3 now coming on aggressive shot throws to the endzone.

The kid now has 23 TD passes in 6 games (5 rushing) and literally hasn’t thrown a pure bonehead pick all season. I think JT’s astronomical season record of 67 Pass TD is safe, but that 52 from his NPOY season in 2017 might not be.

MD defense still giving up some big plays, but making some of their own with a pick 6 taken back by Domani Jackson off Gonzalez, and a safety forced after great kickoff coverage downed the Lancers at the 2.

Monarch special teams has been stellar this season for the most part. The kicking game has been a hidden advantage for Rollo in the last few seasons really, since Stonehouse and McGrath were out there booming moonshots.

Bosco 27 Servite 26

Scoreless first quarter in this one after Servite missed the first of its missed kicks on its opening possession (FG no good). Friars ran the ball 18 times in the first half and worked the possession clock, surprisingly converting 5 of 7 first half 3rd downs with that strategy by Troy Thomas and OC Darnell Arceneaux.

DJ cracked the scoreboard open, lacing a sideline strike to Collins, who hauled it in over a badly beaten Servite CB and took it in for a 58 Yd score, early 2Q. Collins ended up with 6 for 115 and the tub. The junior wideout is finally consistently living up to his immense hype.

“We knew they were going to try to keep the ball out of our hands, which they did in the first half,” Negro said of Servite. “We didn’t get enough stops in the first half and it put us behind the eight ball.”

Indeed. Noah Fifita led an 80 yard TD drive (!) to answer Bosco, capped by a 2 yard toss to McMillan, who shook Jon Jon Vaughns out of his Nikes from the slot at the goaline. Missed PAT.

Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Bosco coaching staff on the last drive of the half after a short would-be TD pass was ruled out of bounds. Negro went ballistic, and it wouldn’t be the last time. Friars forced an ugly 36 yard FG attempt which missed badly as Servite “danced off the field” per Dan Albano.

DJ fired moonshot TD balls to Jode McDuffie and Loya for 47 and 30 yards respectively in the 3rd quarter, and Sandbeast Jones banged in for another TD as the Braves scored on all 3 of their 3rd quarter possessions.

Fifita hit McMillan, who Randy Moss’d Washington-bound SJB corner James Smith and went in for the TD, PAT GOOD, to make it 27-13 Bosco going into the 4th.

Fifita then hit Centers for about 30 over the middle early in the 4th to make it 27-20, with another made PAT (give the Servite K some credit).

After the Servite defense forced a punt, Braves safety Jake Newman picked off Fifita just past midfield and took it back into Servite territory. That was followed by a quick 3 and out by Bosco, the blocked punt by Troy’s son Houston Thomas and 29 yard return by Jacob Manu for what looked like a tying score ... until the dagger missed PAT.

Servite still had 6:38 left, but the game somehow slipped into a weird penalty/clock drain vortex. Per Albano, the Braves ran out the final 4m “under a sea of penalties” lol. Per the Register, “ Servite used all three of its timeouts on the final possession, which began at the Braves 12-yard line and bizarrely ended at about the same spot.” Never heard of any of that happening to end a game, but if you can pull it off, brilliant strategy Cotton!

10 official penalties on Bosco for 134 yards in this one, which is actually a pretty light total for them this year. Per reports, Negro was so mad that he screamed the refs off the field in the final seconds and incurred another flag LOL. Followed by this humdinger of a post game quote:

“I thought we did a pretty good overcoming a lot of stuff,” said St. John Bosco coach Jason Negro.

“Certainly wasn’t pretty, but at the end of the day, we got a win in this league. That’s a good football team. … We got to clean some things up but to come down to Orange County and win a game is not easy for us, and it’s been that way for years.”

Wow, ok Jason, tell us how you really feel bro.

As you would imagine, TT was in a much better mood:

“I love my team and I love the way they play,” Coach Thomas said. “We had our opportunities and it doesn’t come down to those kicks. There are other things we missed on tonight. Same thing with Bosco. They won the game and we have to win games like this to be relevant in the Trinity League and we will.”

update on Jake overman? Saw him on crutches but hope its nothing but a sprained ankle. He went down on what looked like a non-contact play.

Does Prep Zone show replays of games? Cant seem to find it on the app

I believe the Prep Zone/Fox Sports West app now only allows access to two games per week, and it’s only the prior “game of the week” and one other replay game. So, for example, the Tesoro/San Clemente game is available now in the app, but the “other” replay game isn’t scheduled to be released and available until Wednesday. And you have to sign in to the app identifying your TV provider to even see those.

Pretty sure they got rid of the old functions where you could watch any of the 5 prior week games at any time. However, I haven’t accessed the website through a computer in a while, so maybe it’s different on there.

Sad. Very sad.

JSerra 35 Santa Margarita 3

Sorry to the fans of the Jim Hartigan Bowl for being late on posting a recap of this one in the thread. It didn’t exactly have a lot of suspense this year.

Lions RB Sammy Green was a bit of a surprise superstar in this one, busting open a 7-3 game at halftime with two more 3rd quarter scores, and ending up with 114 yards rushing on only 14 carries, 2 catches for 74 yards, and 3 rushing TDs. Senior Cal commit RB Chris Street has had a bit of an up and down season, and kids like Green and Earnest McDaniel have stepped up in key moments for the JSerra offense this year.

Give the Eagles credit, they fought to make it tough on JSerra in the first half before the (imported) talent advantages for the Lions became too much to handle. After Green’s first TD, SM held JS scoreless in the 2Q, driving into the red zone twice but mustering only a FG by Connor Teasley.

Per Pat Harlow, Green went bananas in the halftime locker room to fire up his teammates, then scored on runs of 1 and 11 yards as part of a 28-pt 3rd quarter explosion for JSerra that put the game away.

Jaden Genova and Malaki Teo continued to be the best LB combo in the Trinity Lg, with Genova sprinting through for a sack/fumble of SM QB Colt Fulton that Teo scooped and scored.

Genova (who spent his freshman year at MD) had 10 more tackles and 2 more sacks, continuing a great junior year. He also looks and sounds freakishly identical to his two older brothers, both former Mater Dei captains:

Genova and Teo caused all kinds of problems for Bosco last year. They will need to harass DJ again, force him to move his feet and get off his spot, and force a few turnovers if the Lions are going to pull the upset this week.

General Booty somehow completed only 5 passes in this game for 150 yards, 2 of those to Green out of the backfield for 74 yards. He only attempted 11 passes overall, and threw a pick with no touchdowns. He, the Lion wideouts and Eric Rescigno’s passing game are going to have to be a LOT better than that to beat Bosco.

Fulton struggled again for SM, going 11-23 for 137 and a pick. Nick Barcelos was SM’s leading rusher with 51 yards on 19 carries. Senior safety Mitch Messier led the defense with either 8 or 9 tackles, depending on the source.

Eagles host a Thursday nighter this week at Trabuco Hills High against OLu, in the 2019 Trinity Lg Toilet Bowl. I wonder if the boosters down in Coto have already started grumbling about Vieselmeyer at their QB Club functions. “He’s had 6 games dammit!!” ...

I think the conventional wisdom would say that after Bosco had a lot of things exposed against Servite, Bosco is going to struggle on the road this week against a good JSerra team, and Servite is going to push arch rival Mater Dei to the limit.

I gotta say though, I just don’t see it going down like that.

I think Negro is going to channel the blazing hatred he had for those Servite game refs at OCC, that got him a POSTGAME flag on the way to the handshake line (LOL), into getting after the a$$es of his players this week. Especially after JSerra had them on the ropes last year in Bellflower.

Negro knows this is a breaking point in the season, and they can’t be BSing around thinking about the MD game and national titles.

I think Bosco will come out ready to prove a point against the best team they’ve played to date, knowing that the Lions are gunning for them and have had this game circled since last October. I see Bosco winning this one by double digits. Although I hope JSerra either proves me wrong and it’s a thriller, or a late score by SJB makes it look worse than it was.

As far as MD/Servite, I expect this to be chippy all the way from pregame to the postgame interviews like it always is. It DEFINITELY was last fiesty last year before AND after the whistle:

But as much as we know TT will not have to do much to get the boys fired up, as much as they’ll (literally) come out swinging, and as many clever chants as the “Asylum” will put together, I just think this is a bad matchup for Servite.

The Friars attacked the Bosco secondary (a Bosco weak spot) with success (Bosco also has a suspect pass rush without sending blitzers). Mater Dei’s secondary is the strength of its defense, as is its pass rush with Raesjon Davis and Fuamatu and Leutele and Salazar/Narayan, among others. I don’t see Fifita/Centers/McMillan and company having nearly as much success this week as last. Even in 1 on 1 matchups.

Servite’s run game is suspect, so they lack balance and thats usually a death knell against an Eric Johnson defense. Ask St Frances. I’m not saying they can’t score, but I don’t see them consistently driving on MD, NOR do I see them consistently making chunk plays. Although given the tendencies of kids like Domani Jackson to be boom or bust, I can imagine the Friars will get behind MD a few times.

But overall, we KNOW Servite ALWAYS has the Monarchs attention. Urban Meyer’s rivalry dedication and still refusing to refer to Michigan by name even working TV has NOTHING on Rollo and how serious he takes this rivalry (even if he does call them by name). Every MD player understands the seriousness of this game, it’s bred into them, even the transfers lol. They will be ready (see the video above for reference).

I haven’t said much about the MD offense v the Servite defense because, well, that’s a mismatch. I honestly can’t see Servite holding MD under 40 in this game, probably 50, for various and obvious reasons. Not the least of which is the Monarchs having a likely future pro at QB.

I don’t see Servite scoring 24 points in this game, let alone 40. So I got the Monarchs, and I don’t think there will be that much suspense. Although there will be a lot of 2nd half personal fouls and long arm handshakes in the post game line.

I can see this years MD-Servite game being closer than compared to the previous MD-Servite games of the past couple of seasons, but of course no doubt about it MD will win hands down, its a reminder that Servite has beaten MD 3 times within the past 30-31 years.

I agree with Omar. The secondary got burned again by OLu last week and had several bad breakdowns in the first half against St. Johns College. MD needs to clean this up. DJ is probably salivating when he watches film of the blown coverages in the MD secondary.

I haven't seen this in a while, and its unavailable to watch on youtube or anywhere else on the internet, it's the NFL films documentary about the Mater Dei-Servite rivalry, I would definetley be interested in watching it again, because I remember reading, that it was a major influence in luring JT Daniels to MD.
