Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
That’s the big question for the Spartans. This is the greatest high school football program in the history of the world. But they measure themselves on state and national titles, particularly on dominating California. Not on NorCal titles.
We expect to see DLS face off in the Open Division state title game, against whomever comes out of SoCal, every year. But will it be another SoCal blowout (like 2016/2017)? Or can the Spartans actually compete with the CIFSS behemoths again?? (Last year’s 2 TD loss to MD was not truly “competitive”)
Will be tracking the Silver and Green here this season, to see if their Game is Standing Tall ...

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
Spartans beat back the 2nd best program in NorCal last night:
They still haven’t lost to a NorCal team (north of Fresno) since 1991 (which is insane). And after beating the Bulldogs in back to back years, this time when it looked like the annual Sacramento powerhouse might catch DLS in a down year, that streak of half-state domination doesn’t look like it’s coming to an end any time soon.
But on this week of national games, it’s telling that no one even paid attention to this game. It was an afterthought. Even their season opener against St Thomas Aquinas (FL) (loss) wasn’t really treated like a big deal. That would have been national news years ago.
DLS just doesn’t have that type of juice anymore, nationally. That’s shifted south, to MD and Bosco.

Folsom is never going to beat DLS with no offensive balance, and giving up almost 300 yards on the ground.
DLS is also not going to win a state title with no passing game and a suspect secondary. That veer offense just doesn’t dominate like it used to, enough to make up for other deficiencies.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
ya, last years state title game between MD and DLS, the turnovers committed by DLS was the main factor that benefited MD, almost ever DLS turnover was converted into a TD for MD, if DLS held on to the ball better or limited their turnovers, I feel they possibly could have prevented MD from repeating as state champs, but oh well, whats done is done, etc.
the year before, 2017, oh it was a cakewalk for MD, that 2017 MD team was just monstrously powerful, skilled, talented, etc.
I believe some sports analysts consider the 2017 MD team the best in CIF History, so based on recent posts, i believe it is said, which DLS team is the best in their programs rich history? the 2001 team right?

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
Bryce Young, Bru McCoy Evan Bennett Keyon Ware Hudson and Mike Martinez we’re also main factors that benefitted MD, and helped them force the turnovers and turn them into TDs, but I digress lol
DLS turned the ball over five times in the 2017 title game as well, and had turnover and fumbling issues against Bosco in 2016. You could just as easily say that if DLS played better in 2016, Bosco would only have 1 state title in its 79 year school history.
Ball security wasn’t a new issue that just popped up for DLS in 2018. It’s been a recent problem and is a big part of the reason they’ve fallen off. Not something you would see from them 5-10 years ago in big games, such as when they beat Servite by 40 in the 2010 state game, or back to back wins over great Centennial teams in 14/15.
This was already chopped up in another thread (I believe mainly by you)

Lol damn, it’s only week 3. Let’s give it a bit more time. Teams get better as the season goes along.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
well, I guess it would take something like "blowing up the program" to DLS, just like what Rollo did to MD after the 2011 season, to make DLS get their swagger back.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
Or it would take something like firing your longtime coach and alum (Mendoza), dropping him like a bad habit, then hiring another alum (Negro) as coach who knows how to hire the right “assistants” to maximize your recruiting base and find the right transfers year after year ... which is what Bosco did in 2009.
So now that we’ve covered what MD/SJB did to get their programs where they are ... maybe DLS should try that?
Not thinking Coach Lad is going to allow the program he built to be “blown up” while he is still on staff, nor does it need to be.
Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
Back to the DLS/Folsom game-until Folsom beats DLS or a top Southern Section team, they are just pretenders. Big fish in a small pond.

Agree and I think Folsom knows that’s the truth.
I know some very affluent Sacramentoans who would argue that Folsom/Granite Bay/Rocklin and the Folsom Lake area is actually quite a big pond, literally lol

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
just said that because, I feel that ever since MD and Bosco became what they are now, MD has without a doubt, without question, lured, attracted the better talent than Bosco has, results on the field say so, I wouldn't say MD has done recruiting but they have socially influenced players from the IE Ducks to play for MD, since QB Coach Dave Money had ties to the IE Ducks for a number of years now.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
yes, but the National titles MD has done have been more decorated than the one Bosco won in 2013, because the 2017 and 2018 MD teams finished ranked number 1 in way more polls than the 2013 Bosco team did, plus, those MD teams are listed on Wikipedia, but the 2013 Bosco team isn't, instead, its Booker T. Washington HS of Florida from the 2013 season.
Besides DLS, I wonder if LB Poly could get its swagger back as well, and possible win their first National title in LB Poly's rich history, or finish the season ranked number 1 in the Nation, which I and many others, find shocking, considering the rich history LB Poly has.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
it makes me wonder, why Bob Lad retired as HC of DLS, because its like, why bother retiring when your program is on auto-pilot in terms of winning all the time, i'm sure thats a big factor as to why Rollo and Gary McKnight(yes I know, different sport, basketball) haven't retired yet either, yet Bob Lad was younger than those 2 when he retired as HC of DLS.

If you intensely watched MD's D line in the title game, especially from a side view you can see how MD caused the fumbles.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
Yep, that was key. The MD rush was just blowing up the DLS O-line all night

De La Salle moved to 7-1 with a 70-7 win over local “rival” (San Ramon) California HS.
Not sure why all those East Bay public schools continue to be in the same league with DLS just to get their heads beat in. Like, the entire East Bay-Mountain league is public schools, other than DLS. Why? lol
Just think, we’re only weeks away from getting to see DLS beat the brakes off Brentwood Liberty or Pittsburg High, again, in a North Coast Section title game.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
yup, Ball Security has definetley been an issue for DLS in title games for the past couple of seasons, that was not the case for them like 5-10 years ago. Anyway, it would be awesome to see Long Beach Poly get their swagger back as well, become a National Powerhouse again and maybe possibly finish the season ranked number 1 in the Nation for the first time in their rich programs history, something that definetley raises eyebrows considering the rich history LB Poly has, and having sent more players to the NFL than any other high school in the U.S.

Re: Can De La Salle get their swagger back?
The LBUSD has done a great job in destroying Poly’s football program and ensuring they are no longer relevant. Sad!
