A massive swell is making its way to Orange County beaches this week – getting surfers excited but posing a big danger for beachgoers enjoying the unofficial last days of summer.
The south swell is traveling 6,000 miles – from where pro surfers got slammed during the Billabong Pro Tahiti – to get here. It will start to show late tonight, filling in Thursday and peaking Friday through Saturday. The waves will drop a bit – but will still be large – Sunday and Monday.
The biggest waves will be at the Wedge – up to 20 feet and larger. Swells there double in size when waves bounce off the Newport Harbor jetty.
Crowds come to cheer on the riders who take on the dangerous spot, but note that this is an experts-only spot.
“It's a dangerous swell. It can be inconsistent with lulls, then all of a sudden you'll get five- and eight-wave sets coming in, so it's kind of a ‘sleeper swell,'” said surfline.com chief forecaster Sean Collins. “If people are crawling out on rocks (and jetties), there definitely can be some problems.”
