Servite - priorities

Postby TahoeCoachRCS » Thu Mar 29, 2018 5:02 pm

No disrespect intended here, but it is very clear to anyone paying attention now (and in the past) that Football is a major priority at Servite. Bringing back Troy Thomas and now adding a big time offensive coordinator: http://blog.servitehs.org/servite-football-announces-the-hiring-of-darnell-arceneaux-as-offensive-coordinator/ the Friars are investing quite a bit into the football program, once again.

No love for the Hoops program? One would think this is an optimal time to go for a change with the transition to a new President, positive energy coming from the football program?

What is the deal here? Do they not care about hoops or having they given new resources to Coach Morris that will allow him to turn the program in a more positive, competitive with their peers, direction?

Servite must have emphasized the collection plate among the parishioners to get Arceneaux.

He's a Hawaii lifer, only time he really left before coaching at Occidental was to play at Utah. Coached his son in basketball at Punahou HS in Honolulu last season. Coached St. Louis HS in 2 different stints (coaching Mariota and Tua Tagavailoa) and coached Mililani HS as well.

Just watch the money go to football. Money that has been saved. Money that is itching to be spent. The school must be loaded and will spend like never before.

So how long are you guys going to give TT to turn this around before saying this was a BIG mistake?

I really hope for the best for you guys however I also hope he gets a chance before he gets
hanged, drawn and quartered. This is not the same football world of 10 years back and his
recent record leaves a little to be desired. I would like to see the games a little more competitive
as long as MD still wins. Best of luck, have patience.

TahoeCoachRCS, I've said it before and I’ll say it again...Morris needs to go. 8-62 in the Trinity League over 7 years. He’s had his chance. It wouldn’t matter if they “show more love to the hoops program” because he’s a bad coach and a horrible judge of talent. End of story. Over 20 kids have left the school over the past 3-4 years because of the basketball program and another 20 or so have quit but stayed at Servite. Brendan Harrick left a few years ago and he just committed to play at Northridge a D1 school. Not only is Mortis a bad coach but he’s not even a good guy. Bowen should give the school a parting gift and fire him or Clinton should step up and prove that he is capable of actually being the athletic director and get rid of Morris himself. It’s baffling trying to figure out why they keep him! I really hope that the new president sees the writing on the wall with basketball and takes matters in to his own hands.

I love all the talk of this not being the same football world as it was 10 years ago. Did they change the way the game is played new rules ? Nope the only major change is the recruiting game went into hyper speed MD & SJB have owned that game for the past several years. During TT's 1st go around with the Friars the recruiting game was on point via the IE pipeline. Hopefully with the new regime the non-Bowen led administration will help promote the program and the transfer and IE pipelines necessary to compete.

itsmyopinionx- I have seen his teams play and they play hard, but Servite teams have always played harder than most. Based on the record alone a change would be good for the coach and good for the school. I realize the mission is lager than wins and losses, but hearts and minds can't help but feel the mission is being short changed with all the losses. They are not competitive in the Trinity League. Period. They are losing to average OC public schools. I can't speak to his character, but if it is as bad as you assert then Servite has an institutional problem in their athletic administration. There are a couple proven head coaches that would be interested in this job, but at this point it does not appear to be opening.

TahoeCoachRCS, I agree that the kids play hard. Nothing against them. Unfortunately he has put them in a position that they can’t handle because he’s alienated many, many talented kids that would contribute. I’d say at least 4 of the 5 starters on varsity this year would be coming off the bench had Morris been able to retain talent. THEN, they would have won some Trinity league games because those kids would be playing in the correct role on the team. It certainly can’t get any worse with basketball so why not get a new coach and start the building process? As of now, NO ONE is coming to Servite for basketball. Even alumni with basketball players aren’t sending their kids there. Administration knows all of this. Again, not sure why they don’t make the change.

Honest question here: what does "playing hard" mean in this context? Is a hoop team like Servite, clearly outmatched talent-wise, "playing hard" because they are scrapping for loose balls and playing scrappy defense while getting blown out? I think playing hard has to eventually involve having some success right?

Is a more talented team NOT playing hard simply because it doesnt look difficult for them to win? What if the more talented team is winning BECAUSE they are playing hard, smart, and efficient, but it doesnt LOOK like they are TRYING hard because they are playing an inferior team? What would they have to do to get credit for playing hard? Win by 100 instead of 20? If they did that, wouldnt that be called terrible sportsmanship?

I just wonder, because I only seem to hear that bad hoop teams play hard, and that good hoop teams are often "coasting" on talent. That's not being said here, but I think people that do that are being lazy in their analysis.

Playing hard is playing with a sense of urgency, for me. What I mean by Servite playing hard is they hustle, dive on the floor for loose balls, run the floor hard in both directions, cut hard on offense. There are plenty of talented teams playing hard and with urgency. In the Trinity I would say MD and Bosco play hard on a consistent basis. SM could have won the league if they played harder on defense. JSerra and OLU had talent, but their effort level was very inconsistent.

What about when Morris made the only 2 Black players on his team clean the lockers and be the water boys for being 2 min late for practice. They were late because Morris made them get their ankles taped when they didn’t even want too. Then the water wasn’t cold enough for the other players so he made the same 2 players put ice in the water bottles. I can go on and on with similar stories. Morris is a piece of S..T. Not to mention his director of basketball operations is in prison for child pornography, any other school would of fired him for that alone. Then he told another players family that their son would play a lot up in a tournament in Tahoe area. The family drove up to the games and Morris didn’t play their son at all. The player was a kid he convinced to leave another school he was a starter at to come play at Servite and told him he would start.

Dailydose, does administration know about all those things you mentioned? Obviously they know about the Reeder guy...I know there have been many people that have gone in regarding Morris but it always falls on deaf ears. Admin acts like they’ve never heard any complaints about Morris despite the fact that MANY, MANY people have gone in. It’s so weird. J Serra hired their new coach. Time for Servite to hire someone new.

Yes, there was a meeting and Morris tried to send Couso to the meeting in place of him. Then Morris was called into meeting and lied his ass off. The administration let it go. Players quit and couple other players left to other schools shortly after.

Dailydose, it's very frustrating that administration just keeps dismissing everyone as though they are the problem and not Morris. At some point they have to think they have a problem on their hands. They should have realized that a few years ago.

Strike now while the leader's chair is empty. The school has to have money and lots of it. Basketball is another sport Servite has not spent money on in years. Recruit coaches and players.

Wow. This guy wins CIF a month ago and gets fired. Morris is 8-62 in league over 7 years and still has his job. I don't know much about Beaty but Servite should look in to hiring him.

What do both of those examples have in common? Evidently the W/L record wasn't considered the most important factor in the decision to keep or fire the coach.
Well, obviously we have giant butterflies in CA. They's climbin' in your windows, They's snatchin' your people up, tryin' to steal 'em. So y'all need to hide your kids, hide your stars, and hide your coaches cause they're grabin' everybody out here.

Professor Fate, true but Morris is a bad guy too. I speak from experience. Hard to believe he exemplifies what Servite stands for. I know nothing about the Crean Lutheran coach but the article did say that the families are probably surprised at their decision leading me to believe they may have liked him. The only reason anyone would be surprised if Morris got fired is because they finally did it.
