Upland HS wins Bonita 7v7 Tourney

Postby FilthyPelican » Sun Jul 01, 2018 5:28 pm

Upland HS Beat Arroyo B, Arroyo A, Arcadia, Valencia, and Culver City to win the Tournament. Their up and coming Junior QB Rowe played near flawless games to win the Tournament taking down some very good teams.
QB Rowe will clearly be the starter this year as I had previously said. Now can someone please come up the 57 and take the Boop kid and his dad Back to Calvary Chapel. His Friday numbers splitting time with another sophomore for the back up spot were not good and he Clearly won't be starting at UHS. Do any of you know if a "Max Prep All American" has been a back up??? :eh?:
Anyhow great Day for UHS winning both Bonita and then the West Covina Lineman Challenge for the 3rd year. Now its time to get ready for real football and stop with the touch football games.

Upland Plays in the Baseline league.
If winning the Baseline league and going deep into the playoffs every year is Under achieving then yeah you might be right. UHS does better than 97% of the schools in the state every year. That's not bad.

Upland does do well I wouldn't deny that when compared to every high school in Ca. It appears RR comment revolves around the idea they should be even better... and the fact he hates the Upland goes over on Rivals...

For the amount of transfers they receive and players who go onto to play college ball ... yes that is underachieving...

Isn't the number of kids that go on to play college ball the only goal that matters?
If kids in your program are making it to the next level on scholarship then you are doing something right.
In the end that's all that matters, Not State Championships, Not CIF Championships, Not League Championships.
Free College is the goal if you are in high school.

RR, there is no reason to be so critical of this thread. The title and nature of his post is informational and FP didnt make any exaggerated claims about Upland football. Just let it go at that.

Free College is the goal if you are in high school.

FilthyPelican, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but in four sentences you've managed to summarize everything that has gone sour with high school football.

No. Free college should not be the only goal. Nor should it be the main or even first goal of hs sports for that matter.
Unless your a daddy baller that is. Those are the only ones immature enough to be all about offers.

Maybe not, but you would be a fool not to take advantage of the opportunity for a free college education

FP, I understood what you were trying to say but how you said it didnt come across to me that way. So I wrote what I did below. It was not written to rebuff your opinion but to add something to it. Every coach wants to say that he helped to develop a player and given him the tools to play at the next level.

Coming to "our school" will give you the best chance to make it at the next level. Sometimes that is true, many times it is said that this is "a" goal, but to a school and a program it is about teaching what a team sport is all about that makes a difference, not that you failed if you dont have the gifts to play at the next level.

FilthyPelican wrote:Isn't the number of kids that go on to play college ball the only goal that matters?

"the number of" or " the only goal" is never what matters. The number is just a result of having many players with enough God gifted talent that happen to be on a team. The goals are to learn life lessons of teamwork, self sacrifice for a greater purpose, hard work to improve yourself, how to face challenges in your life, those are just some of topics that any good coach should have to teach his players. If there is something for a player like a chance to play at the next level, it is because of the gifts God gave him and that players own determination that may have been cultured by a good coach.

again just the result of having kids with God gifted talent but it is what kind of a person they are, along with all of their teammates, from the coaches teachings is the true gage of what a coach and his program have taught kids in becoming men (adults).

Graduating is the main goal, having applied yourself in your classes to be able to qualify to get into a college of their choice is the real goal. If you can get some of it paid for because you have worked for it then that is a blessing and result of their work.

2002 Tony, On point as usual. :notworthy: Thank you Tony.
Scholarships are a bonus of doing everything right and having God given talents. Not letting your 7 on 7 handler reach out and extort you to college coaches based off football in shorts and tee shirts. Or a personal trainer put videos together showing how good you do in a ladder drill or in 1 0n 1's. This is NOT real football.
I think being apart of your TEAM you play on Friday nights with, is the team you should be COMMITTED to.
NOT, showing up when you want, thinking you are above the team, doing your own thing whenever YOU want.
Its NOT all about YOU! Its about WE, and the quicker the premadonnas figure that out, the quicker their TEAM will be on track to WINNING and achieving GOALS!
It all starts at the top though. Coach needs to put guys in check because if you let the inmates run the asylum you will lose and lose big! Too many chiefs and not enough indians is never a good way to run a squad.
Togetherness, brotherhood, 1 goal, 1 team, hardwork, positive vibes, high energy, good things are gonna happen.

Tony, I appreciate your well-written response. My reply was kind of taken out of context in the way I had worded it. There is a lot more that matters in high school and in high school sports but sometimes its somewhat irritating when you have people say your teams underachieved because they didn't win the CIF title. Upland has lost to some loaded Centennial teams in the playoffs, Bosco a few years back, Then the Baldwin injury last year and some questionable coaching calls at the end Oaks Christian game. They are in the hunt almost every year which very few public schools can say nowadays. Upland has put out some very good teams and sent some very good players on to the next level and will continue to do so.

Hit the Lights,
With High School Handlers and CIF transfer rules along with allowing privates to play with a different rulebook than publics a lot of that is almost a thing of the past now sadly.
Great comment though.
