Russia-US relations: Russia’s approval of US SKYROCKETS in wake of Helsinki summit

RUSSIA’s approval of the US has reached the highest level since 2014 in the wake of President Donald Trump’s landmark summit with President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki in July, according to a new poll.

...The results, which were published on Thursday, indicate that the number of people who regard the US positively rose considerably, while the number of individuals who view the nation negatively dropped significantly from nearly 70 percent to 42 percent.

...It also noted that 29 percent of individuals interviewed felt the Helsinki summit had improved bilateral relations with the US, while only four percent felt the meeting had worsened relations.

The Levada Centre has produced polling data in Russia in some form since 1987, and is a respected independent surveyor of public opinion in the country. The agency interviewed 1,600 people at their residences between July 19 and July 25 as part of the poll.

So...Can any of the Trump haters put aside their myopia, and answer this question objectively?

Is this, or is it not, a good thing.

Well, obviously we have giant butterflies in CA. They's climbin' in your windows, They's snatchin' your people up, tryin' to steal 'em. So y'all need to hide your kids, hide your stars, and hide your coaches cause they're grabin' everybody out here.

Given how the view of our leadership by the rest of the Western world is incredibly low..no, it isn't a good thing. Trump has achieved this level of approval from Russia by insulting and threatening our allies.

I'd say the same thing JQP said and ask, why do you care what the Russians think of the US?

I'm jumping in while it isn't closed yet ; I'm in Russia right now because of professionnal reasons, and yeah, Russians do like Trump because they see him as a terrible president and are quite happy that the USA have such a basket case in power ; this has historical reasons though, because president Boris Yeltsin was highly impopular in the 90s due to the awful economic, humanitarian, social and political crisis provoked by the fall of the USSR. Yeltsin's (and his government's) "shock therapy" laws left millions of people without wages, healthcare, security, and some historians estimate that the 90s in Russia were the second worst event in Russian history in terms of human and material losses, behind World War II but ahead of Stalin's repressions.
And in 1996, Boris Yeltsin was reelected, even if most Russians held him responsible for the crisis they lived in and were ashamed of his drunk antics. And it turned out that Yeltsin's campaign was backed by American "advisors".

So, when Russians saw that Trump won the election, most of them thought that they deserved it and that it would be, if anything, fun to watch.

I have no doubt this is all true.

Putin is laughing his ass off.
They told me if I voted for Hillary Clinton the president would be emotional, impulsive, and unpredictable. They were right. I voted for Hillary Clinton and got a president that is emotional, impulsive, and unpredictable.

No, it is because it has come at a heavy price. The insults to our longest, closest, and most loyal allies is too much to pay for some approval poll from the citizens under a dictatorship.

Besides the question of why anyone not desperately fishing for good news to thank Trump for would think an innocuous opinion poll is worth noting...

Professor, do you have any idea what might have changed between 2014 (not January 2017) and now?

The Professor probably thought he had some sort of irrefutably wonderful positive about Trump.

Imagine his disappointment in the responses.

It's almost like I willed it to happen...

From the USA Today:

"WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is deeply unpopular across the globe, holding the most negative rating among five world leaders, according to a new poll conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

A median of 70 percent of respondents across 25 countries said they do not have confidence in Trump to do the right thing – a significantly higher disapproval rating than the leaders of Germany, France and China. Only Russian President Vladimir Putin came close, with 62 percent of the poll’s respondents saying they did not trust the former KGB agent."
