Long Running Rivalries

Postby Bick » Mon Sep 10, 2018 8:28 am

With Los Al playing the second half of the Banning-Carson "The Game" rivalry on Friday, I'm curious what rivalries in OC have surpassed the 67 consecutive years of that one. Carson currently leads 44-23 after being up 28-22 at the turn of the millennium. Paul Huebner / Chris Ferragamo v. Gene Vollnogle battled for 30 of those years. Those were some wars back in the 70's-80's.

I know Fullerton - Anaheim don't play each other any longer. That would've surpassed it. I think Mater Dei / Servite is the closest in terms of consecutive games played...57?

in south OC due to the conference structure don't think there are too many that are continuous.

CDM vs. Newport Harbor? FV vs Edison?

Thnx Bick for starting a great HS FOOTBALL topic and thread

Isn't Anaheim the oldest public OC HS? Would they not have some long rivalry history?

@ Daddy I can answer the CDM vs Newport Harbor question. Newport Harbor’s 1963 squad, coached by Wayne Hughes, won the inaugural Battle of the Bay, 13-12. The Sailors lead the all-time series, 38-18. This years "BATTLE OF THE BAY" will be the 57th year the game has been played. CDM has won the last 5 in a row. It's a great game, it is everything that is "Friday Night Lights".

Where San Clemente says "One Town One Team", our city says "One Town One Winner One Loser"! Won't ever let an opportunity pass to say "Beat The Tar Outta Harbor"

Battle of the Bay goes back to 1963, so they'd be just behind the Holy War.

I love this stuff. One of the guys who used to post about NH lore (amongst other things) was Max. Cool, respectful rivalries. I'm getting that same vibe from the Banning-Carson rivalry.

Great topic, guys.

SK80, the oldest high schools in Orange County are:

1889 - Santa Ana
1893 - Fullerton
1898 - Anaheim
1903 - Orange
1906 - Huntington Beach
1921 - Garden Grove & Tustin
1927 - Brea Olinda
1930 - Newport Harbor
1933 - Valencia
1934 - Laguna Beach

Bick, the county schools that have played each other for the most years are the following:

81 - Brea-Olinda vs. Valencia
63 - Huntington Beach vs. Newport Harbor
61 - Fullerton vs. La Habra
61 - Garden Grove vs. Rancho Alamitos
60 - Orange vs. Santa Ana
59 - Bolsa Grande vs. Garden Grove
57 - Bolsa Grande vs. Rancho Alamitos
57 - Buena Park vs. Sunny Hills
57 - Fullerton vs. Sunny Hills
57 - Mater Dei vs. Servite

It's obvious from that list that the Freeway and Garden Grove leagues have had a stable makeup for a very long time. And it will take someone with a lot more patience than I have to determine if all those years were consecutive or not.

Let's give BICK that assignment MDDad! THNX! And if you really want to dig BICK put the all time records up there in each rivalry! This could well be the most formidable, on topic, argument free thread of the season!

That Valencia Brea-Olinda rivalry might very well be consecutive. It has been since 2000, and Valencia opened in 1933. If they started playing each other in 1936, there's your 81 straight games. Had no idea about those 2. As for the rest...I don't have the resources to check it out.

Not as long of a rivalry, but I always enjoyed the ET Trabuco "Cross-town" rivalry. It meant more when the two shared a stadium, but I still think its a fun game to go to.

A young rivalry that has the making of a great one is JSerra vs SM- bad blood between the schools, players, administrators and students going back/forth between the two, lots of gamesmanship when they play each other.

I haven’t seen every rivalry game. From my experience the top 3 in OC are:
1. Edison/ Fountain Valley
2. Mater Dei / Servite
3. Newport Harbor/ CDM

Like I said, I haven’t seen them all. And if you haven’t been to one of these games, do yourself a favor and check ‘em out. There is something special about attending high school football games... and rivalry games are even better, no matter how lopsided the matchup may be in a given year.

Not sure anyone will get in to this years "BATTLE OF THE BAY". This game sells out to students at school in an hour especially when the game is held at Davidson Field. Even when held at Bard Stadium at OCC it "sells out", every year there are angry fans outside the stadiums, if you get lucky a Newport or CDM student will sell you a ticket at $40.00
