Scott Prohaska leaving Servite for MD, Matt Mitchell, the OC Coordinator at the time, leaving Servite, a weak athletic class of 2011, really contributed to the downfall of Servite.

The game has been pushed back to 8:15 for a weather delay.

Lions 56 Lancers 21.

JSerra Looking to lock up that 5th playoff seed depending upon how the MD result goes. Maybe 4th if Oaks Christian struggles down the stretch.

There technically is no 5th playoff seed...and you're forgetting Mission Viejo and Oaks Christian are both ranked above JSerra.

I’m not being “technical.” Everyone knows it’s a BRACKET and the top 8 teams get coveted 1st round home games, and are essentially seeded like a typical tournament bracket — even if only 4 TECHNICALLY get seeds. Out of that 8, JSerra looks to be in good position for the 5th spot/seed/delegation/slot, whatever you want to technically call it.

And I’m not forgetting anyone. This is the playoffs we’re talking about, there is some projection involved. Regardless of rankings in early October, I can see a potential 8-2 (or better) JSerra team being a contender for the 4 or 5 slots depending on how their season and 4 loss MV, Oaks and others finish up. You’re forgetting, the rankings only matter (for playoff purposes) at the end of the regular season.

That's not how it normally works. JSerra will likely be a third-place team, and they likely won't get that 5th spot/seed/delegation/slot. Once the four seeds are placed, the CIF normally places the remaining first-place teams before filling in the remaining spots with second- third- and at-large teams.

But there’s no rule mandating CIF slot the teams that way. And if a team, regardless of league place, has performed better in the eyes of the bracket-makers, they can be placed in better position, no? Especially considering that team may have only lost competitive games against 2 of the top teams in the nation (top 2 in CA), and be viewed as one of the tops in the state and top 25 nationally itself. And again, depending on how JSerra, Oaks and MV and others finish up.

But I’ll defer for sure, I am certainly not a technical expert on playoff slotting, capable of explaining how the committee will view Oaks 83 point win over Bakersfield New Testament School in comparison with JSerra’s non league and Trinity schedule, or MV’s complicated undefeated with 4 forfeits season.

Another good win for the Lions. Bigger game tonight if this weather continues to hold off.

All the factors you mention are reflected in the CIF's weekly rankings. Right now, JSerra is ranked sixth, and they certainly won't move up if they lose to Mater Dei next week. Couple that ranking with what will probably be a third-place league finish, and there's no case to be made for putting them in the "5th" spot in the bracket.

regardless-don't think I'd want to play JSerra in the first couple of rounds.

Agreed. JSerra is almost certain to go on the road in the first round and knock off some league champion on their home field.

Well we can all agree JSerra will be a tough out in the first round. And I guess were assuming they lose and MV/Oaks and everyone ahead of them wins out.

But wait, now they’re going on the road, even at 8-2? But the seeds are strictly based on rankings? Ok ... Well, is JSerra going to drop down to 9 or lower in rank with a loss to MD then? #-o And which league champ is going to be ranked/seeded higher than JSerra to cause them to have to play on the road 1st rd? Or is that a 3rd place penalty too, being forced to play on the road even if you’re one of the top teams in the division and entire state?

I guess technically, theoretically, a 5-5 league champ would be slotted ahead of and therefore host an 8-2 third place Trinity team, just because of being a league champ? Maybe that’s happened recently and I’m forgetting (I’m sure someone can cite).

Question-given Bosco's spanking of MD tonight and JSerra's near upset win over Bosco, will JSerra be ranked in the next OC Varsity poll ahead of MD?

More than likely they won’t. Though they lost to Bosco, it was still not a loss to an OC team. Your question will definitely be answered after next Friday pending the outcome of the JSerra/MD game.

My understanding of playoff pairings is that there are only four seeds. Everyone else is placed based on league finish. So they will match up first place teams with at large teams and third place teams when they can. Assuming jserra is not a top 4 seed and they lose to mater dei they will be the number 3 trinity team and will either play a league champion or a number two team from another league. So that team would be at home. There used to be a document of the cif website that explained exactly how the pairings were done that allows you to project it pretty accurately
