D1 Playoff Picture

Postby SoCalFball » Wed Oct 10, 2018 8:34 am

League Champs
Mater Dei 9-1
Corona Centennial 10-0
Oaks Christian 10-0
Mission Viejo 6-4
Bishop Amat 9-1
Vista Murrieta 8-2
Long Beach Poly 8-2
Valencia 7-3

Auto Bids
St. John Bosco 9-1
Jserra 8-2
OLU 5-5 (No they technically aren't a auto bid but they will be a lock in wildcard)
Rancho Cucamonga 5-5
Murrieta Valley 6-4

On The Bubble
Servite 3-6
Santa Margarita 4-6
Serra 5-5
Chaminade 3-7
San Clemente 5-5

Those are my predictions on the records. Based off that Santa Margarita, San Clemente and Serra will make the wild card. All this is IMO.

Would you want to get JSerra as a #3 team?

if San Clemente is 5-5 because they beat Capo but lost to MV, they get an auto bid as the second place team. If they lose to Capo but beat MV then they could be in as league champs over MV or Capo could be in as league champs depending on coin toss and auto bid in as well the 2nd place team over MV. It is when they lose to both Capo and MV that they are on the bubble with a 4-6 record. If it were to end today with Nade at 3-7 and SC at 4-6 then SC may be in with a season record point and SoS points ahead of Nade.

Now there is a brutal thought, Oaks gets seeded 4th and lets say MV gets the mythical 5th spot which would have them in the same quarter bracket as Oaks, playing Oaks in the second round if MV gets past "JSerra" who was the 3rd place team from the trinity in this part of the bracket . The winner of MV /JSerra would get Oaks in the 2nd round and that winner gets the Trinity Champ in the 3rd round. Got to love this new playoff and divisional playoff where it can be a difficult game in each round.

I dont think that will happen, I think it would be the 3rd place team from the Mission that would play MV in the first round if MV was placed the 5th ranked team in the bracket and JSerra will go into the lower bracket with the 2nd place team from the trinity.

Oaks is overrated at this point IMHO...JSerra looks like a much tougher draw

Exactly right. When possible, the bracketeers try to put a league #1 in one half-bracket and the league's #2 and #3 in the other half.

Still a lot of football left to be played, but here's my current bracket projection based on games played through this week. The biggest thing I'm interested to see is how the CIF is going to handle having 8 league champs in the same bracket while also very likely having a 2nd place team as one of the top 4 seeds. In the past two years, they have always matched up the 2nd place Trinity team (as the 3rd overall seed) with another 2nd place team to preserve the 2v2 matchups. However, I suspect that they are more likely to pit all league champs against all non league champs even if that means having a league champ facing off against a top 4 seed.

You'll almost certainly see JSerra, Mater Dei and Centennial in the same half of the bracket. Bosco's win last night got them out of that gauntlet.

You don’t think it would be smart by CIF to split up Bosco, CC, MD and Jserra into top and bottom brackets?

Trinity#1 will automatically be on the opposite side of the bracket of Cen10/Trinity#2 (assuming Trinity #1 and Cen10 will be among the top 3 seeds). Historically, when there are 4+ teams from the same league in a bracket league #1/#4 will be placed on one side of the bracket and league #2/#3 will be placed on the other side.

So, you think if everything falls into place of course, SJB would get Serra instead of Servite?

The CIF pretty much always avoids same league first round matchups whenever possible.

you need to move OLu out of the qtr bracket with Bosco and put them in the lower qtr bracket to play Oak Christian. The top 4 trinity teams will go into the 4 corners of the qtr brackets. Move RC up to play Poly. Or have Murietta Valley up to play Poly and RC to play Mission Viejo.
In the lower bracket they change the BA and VM positions to keep MD and BA meeting in the 2nd round. just a thought.

Also, with 8 first place teams, each getting a home field game in the first round, that would have the number 3 seeded team (MD) in the division has to play on the road in the first round. I wounder if they will change the rules and give the seeded team the home game. I dont think they will change the rules, but it is interesting to get seeded and have to travel. And if RC would happen to beat Upland, that would have 9 1st place teams in the division and would have 2 1st place teams playing each other in the first round. Do they pick a neutral field to play at?

But this is not a "usual" year, with 3 of the top 4 teams likely from one league. I think CIF almost has to place the loser of MD-JSerra into Bosco's half of the draw with the winner going into CC's half...
