2019 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Postby John Q. Public » Thu Dec 13, 2018 10:26 am

I had hope for it in the first few years but now it's become about as meaningful, artistically, as the Grammys.

The Cure
Def Leppard
Janet Jackson
Stevie Nicks
Radiohead
Roxy Music
The Zombies

Nominated but not inducted:

Devo
John Prine
Kraftwerk
LL Cool J
MC5
Rage Against The Machine
Rufus & Chaka Khan
Todd Rundgren

The Cure? Sure. Def Leppard? Yes. Janet Jackson? Sure. Stevie Nicks? No. Not as a solo artist. Radiohead? WTF? Roxy Music and The Zombies? Most definitely. And a big WTF for all of the ones who weren't inducted, except maybe LL Cool J and John Prine. I don't know that LL Cool J was all that influential and John Prine is one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived but he's more Country. The others should have been inducted years ago. The MC5 should have been Founding Members, considering the influence they had.

And I'd imagine there are still a number of influential Punk and Metal bands who've never been nominated, as well as "underground" and "musicians'" bands from the '60's and '70's who aren't even on the Hall's radar. But it's nice to see Roxy Music, the Zombies, Def Leppard and, I guess, the Cure voted in.

Def Leppard--greatest band ever with an odd number of arms.

If they didn't invent it, they defined Speed/Thrash Metal-for-Metal's-Sake. They definitely belong there.

30 years is too soon? :eh?: Yer showin' yer age, old man.

Who, Def Leppard? I don't think so.

If it's the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I'm not really sure why Janet Jackson and LL Cool J are on the list (or even John Prine, for that matter). Nobody would ever confuse their music with rock and roll. It's like the Pro Football Hall of Fame voting in some really good rugby players. If Janet Jackson is in, why not The Archies?

Heck, the way the R&R HOF works I thought The Archies would make it before Alice Cooper did. smdh :bonk:

Oopes! I was thinking of Megadeth. Are they there?

They've definitely blurred the lines of what constitutes R&R, if they haven't thrown them out the window, altogether.

Megadeth, now you're talking.

Welcome, to our sanguinary sect of worship
Feel at home in our black conventicle
As we anathematize all those who oppose us.

More who aren't there - King Crimson, T-Bone Burnett, X, and like 'em or hate 'em, the Germs invented the last 40 years of punk rock and Black Flag proselytized it. No Social Distortion, either. Hey, if you're going to be including rappers....

They need to rename it the Music Hall of Fame or something and have "wings" like R&R, Rap, Disco, etc. Can anybody name a good R&R band/artist not guzzling Geritol?

Fixed it for you. Kids these days.

Agree on the Rap and Disco wings and I'll add Soul. And I'd disqualify anything for it that was put out after about 1980. The stuff they're calling R&B these days can't compare to the great soul music of the '60's and '70's.

I know, I was there when he got inducted (don't judge me Ima fanboi). But it took way too long for that to happen.

I kind of admire him as a pretty normal guy who's a rock star for a living. Not too many people have been able to pull that off.

I changed the title because I saw the inductees are for 2019.

Something cool from last year that I don't see anything about for this year is "Singles," which I think is just as important as the people who've been selected. For now, I'll say it's a start. Taken from Wikipedia because I don't see anything about it on the HOF site.

"Rocket 88" Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats (1951)
"Rumble" Link Wray (1958)
"The Twist" Chubby Checker (1960)
"Louie Louie" The Kingsmen (1963)
"A Whiter Shade of Pale" Procol Harum (1967)
"Born to Be Wild" Steppenwolf (1968)

"The first Rock & Roll song" (Ike Turner on guitar)

And Link Wray. The first white guitar hero. (Elmore James beat him by 5 years) And the first instrumental song to get banned from the radio.
