Orange Lutheran baseball season ends on a heartbreaker

Postby Trojanfan949 » Fri May 10, 2019 11:39 pm

OLU was by far the most favored team to win in div.1 CIF. They had one of the most dominant highschool pitching staffs in the country and a offense that seemed underrated with a ton of depth and top talent. Its a shame they couldn't finish the season on a high note. They lost to a very good Harvard-Westlake team on a walkoff in the bottom of the 7th. Will be interesting to see how they bounce back next year they return 2 of their best pitchers and some of there starting lineup but lose a ton ofdepth on the mound and their 3 best position players Dixon, Thomas, and Frechette. Trinity league could be a little more interesting next year in baseball.

The Royce Lewis JSerra teams never won CIF despite having probably the most dominant overall team for a couple of years. Lost 1-0 in the playoffs twice. That's baseball.

Yes, baseball is a funny sport where you could have better talent at all nine positions against
your opponent and still lose multiple games against them - it is what it is.

Even in the majors-every team will automatically win 40 and lose 40. What your record is in those other 80 is what seperates great from bad. If you go 40-40 in those other 80-you finish .500. If you go 60-20-you win 100 games and have a good chance of winning the World Series.

High school Baseball playoffs is all about your starting pitchers. When Santa Margarita won the CIF playoffs a few years back they had Griffin Canning and Dillion Miyashiro dominating on the mound and received timing hitting from their offense. OLu had their ace cruising through 4 innings after giving up a home run in the first inning and for some unknown reason they pulled him. Maybe he was injured or not feeling well but it sure seemed like an early hook. They went to their number 2 who pitched two strong innings. They pulled him after a couple singles in the 7th. Now with their 3rd or 4th best pitcher they were in trouble. The kid just didn't have it. A walk, single, walk and single game over. Sometimes coaches over manage instead of sticking with their best just ask Dave Roberts.

BuckW couldn't agree more. However, OLU's 3,4, and 5 are probably as good or better than anyone else's 1 and 2. Evan Adolphus is the ace at any other school and he is OLU's 4th guy in the rotation and was there closer at times. I see what you're saying about the overmanaging comment but Borba should have trust in his whole staff to get 3 outs no matter who it is. Just didn't go their way that day. Harvard-Westlake also has one of the best offenses in Southern California so I don't want to dumb down the fact that they are a great team. Jserra did the same thing last week where they had their number 1 throwing a no-hitter through 5 and 2/3 and after giving up a base hit with one out kay pulled him and they blew a 3-1 lead.

No doubt OLu had a deep pitching staff this year but not all teenage boys handle pressure of do or die playoff games equally. If you have a kid getting outs and his pitch count it is not an issue it's best to stick with him. The more pitchers you use the odds increase of one of them having an off day. I'm sure Dave Roberts still has nightmares about pulling Rich Hill in the series against the Astros.

Don't even getting me started on Jserra baseball. No team has had more talent and more tuition assistance money available for baseball players than Jserra and still zero CIF championships.

It will be interesting to see the next couple of years unfold in for the 2 South County trinity league schools for baseball (SM and JSerra). Chris Mallek has turned around a program that has been bad except for when Canning and company were there in 2014. He has taken a team with pretty minimal talent compared to other Trinity league schools and they are in the Semis of div. 2 CIF with a 3rd place finish in the Trinity league. They only needed 1 win against Jserra to take 2nd place. Rumor-mill is that Jserra is having a tough time getting kids in the school. Enrollment is down in the whole school and they are having a tough time getting kids in the baseball program. This year they cut their Frosh-Soph team and only had 14 kids on their Freshman team. Could start to see a shift in talent start to go to SM next year.

Don't know where you are hearing this-In fact a recent letter by JSerra administration to the parents stated that they have a long waiting list for it's freshman and sophomore classes.
